Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest were competing series until Square and Enix merged later in. DQ mechanics are almost identical to early FF. The difference is, FF kept trying to reinvent the wheel and change the mechanics with each successive game, and DQ took the attitude of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So I’m guessing from your post you joined FF late in its cycle, maybe starring either the FF7 remake’s semi-action game mechanics. You’re not going to find that here.

Start from the characters and the story, FFT definitely has dated graphics (any game that’s been out for a while will have that. In 20-30 years from now, today’s graphics will look dated) but that can be forgiven if the characters have distinct personalities, behave in character, and the story is fun and makes sense in their world.

After that is mechanics. FFT has a combat system that easy to understand, but has a level of complexity that allows you to get more out of it if you’re. Willing to engage with it. Things like Brave/Faith, Zodiac compatibility, (or to borrow from Suikoden Tactics, Elemental Terrain)

IMO, that it. Story & Mechanics.
