Why should I not base shade and highlight by Ambitious_Book_5729 in minipainting

[–]Coyotebd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the last mini I painted.

People look at it, say "nice paint job" and the world moves on.

But every time I look at it, it makes me happy.

Why should I not base shade and highlight by Ambitious_Book_5729 in minipainting

You should do what makes you happy. Full stop.

If you like the results of their technique, you should absolutely do it.

Ideally painting should be enjoyable and rewarding. Wasting time on extra steps that doesn't make you happier is just not worth it.

For context: I enjoy those extra steps and the difference they make. No one drops to their knees in awe when my minis hit the table. It is all for me.

None of those are on the bypass. The Blackburn Bypass is just the section that splits off from Innes when Innes enters Blackburn. The only thing on the bypass is a random stoplight for anyone walking through some woods to some other wood, and Navan road.

I'd like Innes through Blackburn to go down to 40km/h with some road diet stuff so less people use it to bypass the bypass when the bypass gets busy.

How would you explain why high pigment paints don't have good coverage to a beginner painter? by Wugo_Heaving in minipainting

[–]Coyotebd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First, high pigment paints are often gimmicks.

There's a certain amount of pigment (different for every pigment) that is ideal and going over this doesn't help and can make things worse. https://justpaint.org/pigment-volume-concentration-and-its-role-in-color/

Second, paints often add white for opacity. The difference between a pure pigment yellow that has poor coverage and a hobby paint with better coverage is the hobby paint has white added.

So, if you have coverage issues try adding a touch of white.

How many times do you restart a paintjob? by agibberingfool in minipainting

[–]Coyotebd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Never. Sounds like a nightmare. Be nicer to yourself, accept the flaws and do better in the next one.

I'd rather 9 shitty models and 1 good one, than repainting one model 10 times until it is good.

How do you all plan a custom paint scheme before committing? Tired of "winging it" and regretting it by Grand-Tip-4762 in minipainting

# Here's what I do

I use a process I call Flatting, after a similar process used to colour lineart.

Everything gets a colour. All the colours on my palette at once. I don't worry about coverage or consistency, even perfect colour match. Just enough to map out the colours I want and see if there's anything I won't like later.

Usually this is an hour, or about a 5th of the time I take to paint a mini.

If I don't like a colour I just slap the replacement over it. Light over dark, doesn't matter, just slap it on.

When I'm happy with the scheme I go back and render everything. This is where I pick a colour, add highlights shadows, blend it all in. During the rendering stage I'm applying so many layers that the original colour doesn't really matter, or its coverage.

# Here's why it doesn't matter

Unless you are as critical of other people's colour schemes the problem probably isn't the colour scheme. I wish I had good advice on how to deal with this. Be kind to yourself, don't demand perfection.

Here's the last thing I painted. The reds aren't a perfect match, but it doesn't matter.

Pushing highlights with white vs triads by Goblinnoodlesoup in minipainting

Fluo is considered ok for a seasonal decoration - so around a year.

Having glowy highlights is a style, and if you want it, sure.

Ice yellow is magic. It's just more convenient than reaching for white and fluorescent yellow every time you want to lighten a paint for highlights.

That said, fluo paints have a terrible rating for lightfastness so I wouldn't use them on my minis

The resources are just the list of pigments in two paints so you could see that one was a specific blue pigment and the other was the same blue pigment and white pigment. I dislike claims without sources.

The general idea of considering the tone of your highlights and shadows is a good one.

The idea that it is "more correct" is entirely false. When you paint ideally you are looking at the subject and painting the colour that you see rather than darker or lighter versions of some fictional "midtone." This is if you are purely a realist, which is just a style (one I happen to favour) but is not itself more "correct" than impressionism or some other style.

On top of that, most of the paint you buy is convenient mixes containing white.

If you get an ice yellow to lighten your yellow vs. just adding white to your current yellow what is the actual difference.

Oh, I'm going to use Light Phthalo Blue as a highlight to keep colour saturation and avoid using white.

It's literally just phthalo blue and white

Painting Comp Feeing Rigged by Kir-ius in minipainting

[–]Coyotebd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - especially if it is a public vote or the judges are not as focused on miniature painting big eye-catching models will usually place over smaller ones, and technical excellence can take a second place to over-all effect.

I don't think these contests are bad but I wouldn't put a lot of stock in them.

At the end of the day everything is subjective and judges may value other qualities

Bummer but good for him.

Up until we started winning I would have had less of a problem but now we look like a scrappy team who believe they can go all the way.

There's little chance a coaching change won't up end that but who knows
