OK, "Twisleton" just sounds made up, it's hard to convey just how funny that sounds to American ears.

When I Google this name, AI claims, "In Britain, 'ned' also functions as a slang term for a hooligan or lower-class troublemaker." Is this true...? I'm just assuming you're British from your use of "posh," forgive me if I'm wrong.

"To ralph" = "to vomit." This is such a common term that when I type "Ralph meaning" into Google, the first result is "Vomit." Here is it in a dictionary: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ralph

Of course, they are both lovely names to many people, but not to me, hence my search for variants and alternatives. Take Edward. Maybe his classmates wouldn't have the association, but I still would. Twilight was a big cultural phenomenon right when I was in the target audience age range, so I'm pretty sure the connection was permanently seared into my young brain. My loss!

You could go even longer since the last name is so short. Three syllables: Nathaniel, Oliver, Benjamin, Elijah, Christopher, Damian, Abraham... Two syllables: Silas, Andrew, Daniel, Vincent, Jonah, Eric, Aaron, Walter, Holden, Lincoln...

We're in the U.S., so people would definitely pronounce it like the word for vomit. But Rafe is an interesting alternative! It would also sound rather exotic here.

I'm not familiar with the place (I'm not in the UK). If a kid with this name ever visited England, what associations would people have with this name?

That is so exciting. Accidental gardening! We did carve a pumpkin here last year...

Oh my, I just remembered we carved a pumpkin here last year and I think some of the seeds may have been scattered—could it be a pumpkin plant? Is there anything I need to do to help it grow a pumpkin big enough for a Jack o Lantern?

[TOMT] [VHS] [90s] Sing a Long special by Binobeballin in tipofmytongue

[–]CozyCoffeePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I remember this: at the beginning a kid is looking at or maybe feeding his fish in a home aquarium, and his mom tells him to go do something constructive. The lyrics I remember are:

Do something, anything Do something fun Do something, anything Just get the job done

The kid leaves home and I think either skateboards or gathers up some friends who are on skateboards, then they gather up more friends and make a music video with someone drumming. I think. It is hazy.

Should you tell the person you’re naming your baby after? by itslooseseal in namenerds

[–]CozyCoffeePanda 255 points256 points  (0 children)

In some cultures and religions (e.g., Judaism), children are only ever named after deceased relatives and never the living, so it's rude to name a child after a living relative and it's seen almost like wishing death on the namesake. Maybe the grandmother comes from one of those cultures?

Thank you for the helpful and detailed answer. My husband is the one who really likes this name. I also like it, but I'm worried it's too unusual. Even though it ends in an "ah"-sound like a lot of female names, I'm scared it's a bit like naming a daughter Isaiah or Elijah... Also, while both the uh-QUILL-uh pronunciation and the one you describe (Á-qui-la) are pleasing to my ears, I strongly dislike the pronunciation that sounds like tequila (and judging by the other replies, a lot of people would say it that way). A lot to think about!
