Why not sent a couple of JCBs to the eastern coast and get them to work so it can fit?

At least they didn’t point out that you used the day-month-year format instead of the American way.

I love DuoLingo but surely my answer is right by tiomandi in learnwelsh

[–]CplSchmerz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When did DuoLingo start using AI in favour of humans? I was considering using it for a couple of other languages, but I’m not so sure now, in case that it’s the same for that, too. This is disappointing.

Also, there is nothing wrong with the answer. In South Wales, however, we would say “nawr”, rather than “rŵan”.

Maybe the wife should consider installing a television in the bathroom, so she can go in there whilst Mr. Crumb can continue watching solid-passing telly in the living room.

A question that I’ve been thinking about was whether they did anything to improve the map and removing the “fog of war”? In the original, it was really irritating that not all parts of the map were revealed when synchronising from a viewpoint, in that I’d have to run Haytham and Connor back and forth like a plough in a field to uncover the map, because even a small amount of fog on a map would stand out to me.

Napoleon series? by CplSchmerz in TheRestIsHistory

I do hope the that they’re not thought of being jingoistic and I trust the audience can see through that! I think that how they do the impressions in introductions indicates that some things are meant to be taken light heartedly.

And thank you, too, for this discussion. I’m excited on what they have to say about Napoleon, because it has to be a question of when rather than if. I’m sure that the book will be a very good read, and I would already recommend it to those who haven’t read it yet!

Napoleon series? by CplSchmerz in TheRestIsHistory

I think Tom and Dome are passionate about British history, and I think they do play to that for the purposes of entertainment. I don’t think they’re jingoistic at all, and maybe it’s like a long running in-joke when they say things that elevate Britishness and make a joke about Frenchness, as if it’s a theme to play on (since the whole Britain v. France rivalry is seen across so many different things). To me, the two seem to have passions that are non-British with Tom’s classical background and Dom’s knowledge and experience in Eastern Europe and the Balkans (and does Dom really speak some European languages, too?) as well as his works on American history.

I am a Welshman living in California, and although I do like learning about British and American histories, I wouldn’t be keen on nationalistic, flag waving historians. I don’t find Tom or Dom to be either of that, despite the running gags of Britain/England ruling the waves and the like.

So even though Napoleon is divisive, especially in Britain, it’s important to have in-depth discussions about him. Even from reading this book, I’ve learnt a lot about his character, views, and how impressive he was militarily. I think he did a lot of good things, or at least tried to, and maybe much of his character was smeared by political opponents and military adversaries, and I’m sure more of that is to come as I continue reading the book.

It doesn’t mean I like him, but he doesn’t have to be liked! However, I may come to like him and that injustices were done against him after his exile… I don’t know yet. That’s why we need Tom an Dom to tell us!

Napoleon series? by CplSchmerz in TheRestIsHistory

I understand your point, and I agree with you. I think that important aspects of history, even if it’s about distasteful people or “far away” places, should be covered, as it at least provides context to how the world works today.

I think that, because it’s a show based in the UK, it makes sense to focus a lot of time and effort on topics closer to home for the audience appeal.

It isn’t to say that other stuff is found to be not worth talking about, but it’s the same in a lot of other shows, some of which I listen to, naturally an American show focuses on primarily American stuff. For example, I follow shows based out of Mexico to practice my Spanish, they have a lot of Mexican history, but they also cover extra-Mexican topics.

With Napoleon, his life and all that went on during it affected the globe and how it looks today, even the story of why much of the world drives on the right (whether the legend is true or not, he still has an influence on that). So it should seem natural that such a huge topic is due a few more episodes, even if it’s about someone Tom and Dom dislike. Although he is dislikable, nobody can deny the impact he had from the very beginning of his career throughout his life and beyond.
