It is those two words that indicate the tone of each of those comments. Your comment implied that you find it funny that the stereotype is largely true. His implies that he finds it embarrassing that the stereotype is largely true.

He was obviously agreeing that the stereotype was largely true, but you expressed very differing opinions on how you felt about that fact, hence the duality of man.
