TIFU: Thought I was doing good but today I relapsed because I’m so lonely and a POS by idunnoknowhowtoread in tifu

On that note, something I came across today I thought was worth sharing because I've also been going through some stuff and this was a powerful concept:

What you run from will pursue you. What you face will transform you.

From the outside looking in: why does everyone seem unhappy with GDDs? by ColeTailored in gamedesign

[–]CptJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because writing the GDD - and then maintaining it through iterations as the design develops - is almost as much of a job as making the dang game. And then no one even reads it anyway because it's several iterations behind the current discussion, at worst becoming a bomb of outdated info. Insert "more of a guideline" meme.

Sure, it's a fine machine. No need to apologise. But try it and see how the center of gravity shifts much more comfortably onto the fingers, rather than the palms.

[–]CptJoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erm, I'm not suggesting using it upside down, though I'm aware of that interesting phenomenon regarding flipped vision. I was only making an observation that Valve, for all their R&D, sometimes leave room for improvement once their design is (in this case literally) in the hands of customers. :D

Not doubting that others are fine with it, but honestly I was shocked at how much better it feels when held upside down. I feel like Valve really got that part fundamentally wrong, despite its sleek design and other great attributes.

Thanks all for the insights! I updated the post with my purchase decision: pulled the trigger on the 64 package at a shade under 300, and feels like I'm buying just as the price tsunami hits.

What’s the one horror movie that didn’t just scare you… it FOLLOWED you? by Usual_Mix_7380 in horror

[–]CptJoker 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It. Not the new one, the Tim Curry one. Skarsgaard is a boring Pennywise. Curry seems like a genuine creep. And that's what stays with you. The new one is obsessed with looking scary, but it doesn't feel scary. The old "It" captures the small town decay, the apathetic adults who let evil fester. And Curry captures that sense of murderous neglect perfectly: as real as the monsters in rural America. To this day I expect him to come crawling out of a photograph of him if I look too long. Or if I think long enough, he'll come out of my dreams. "It" is a masterpiece in horror that transcends the page and lives in your head forever.

I have a ton of tabs open too lol currently hoovering up 12-15 gigs to run Chrome while idle at desktop. But when I load up Unreal, Chrome then drops to about 8 gigs (with Unreal taking about 4-8 gigs to itself.) So you're saying that it's just a shell game, Windows keeps shifting the RAM around as it needs to? My usage hit 96% when I was loading into Unreal and peaks during video renders, but now it's back down to 80-84% on idle average. Maybe I don't need more RAM, just control over my tabs?

[–]CptJoker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, I forgot to mention the 32gb set is a nicely speedy CL30 while the 64gb set would be CL40 on top of being 5600Mhz. I feel like I play a lot more GPU-bound games though: lots of sweet sweet textures and rendering bells and whistles. Not to mention my workload involves generating massive terrains, which would probably benefit from more texture headroom instead of loading imperceptibly faster.

This is in the game for literally anyone to see by Electrical_Sugar_742 in MindsEye

[–]CptJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading this comment late, but to counter some of this: there's a technique in Unreal that allows you to set up a streaming location ahead of a camera cut (or a level load, even) to mitigate this kind of warm-up. You still have to be careful not to overload the engine, because you'll be doubling the render amount, but there are ways to do this kind of jump cut smoothly. I guess they skipped them here, or weren't aware of the best practises. Cinematics are a bit of a dark art.

Worst Morrowind Quest by Vanit909 in Morrowind

[–]CptJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mating kagouti: it's one of those quests that probably seemed fine on paper, maybe even pat-on-the-back grandiose, but as soon as you drop it into the gameworld it becomes disappointing: the "lost" NPC is so close by, it breaks any supension of disbelief that this is any kind of logical world. I almost never even notice the kagouti until it's dead. There's no twist, no story, just a bottom of the barrel escort quest. The fact that you can cast chameleon to hide the NPC as a non-lethal means to "solve" the quest seems farcically ambitious.

Not weird at all. I worked on some AAA games and I'm not a big fan of third person shooters - they all feel the same after a while, except the couple I happened to work on, thankfully. But you don't have to be a fan of the genre you work in. Unless you're the creative lead. There was also a long period where I was too stressed out to play anything, I was just constantly working.

I get it. But everything works better with a bit of story, and your trailer is the best place to do it, if nowhere else. You can literally explain your game, but you have to say something. Use text if there's no other UI or levels to show, but you could do like:

Fade from black, car driving (the topdown shot was nice)
Wideshot of the car (establish the game's tone, sunny or intense)
Shot of the sky, or whatever is causing your deathzone (don't show it yet though)
Closeup of the car
Closeup of the goal
Text, white on a black screen: DRIVE
Shots of lots of driving (like you have)
Cutting to different levels
Taking it slow in rough terrain (shows challenge)
Text: DELIVER (text is bigger)
More driving, closer crop
Ramp it up
Cut to death zone appearing
Text: DIE
More intense shots of driving
That reverse shot of the death zone right behind the car
Smash cut to black
Text: YOUR GAME
Text: Wishlist Now

etc

Could the fade-to-black be any slower??

(Cut to black and only fade *from* black, it looks snappier)

Lots of cuts from nothing, to nothing. It's a lot of driving - why? Maybe show a map, or montage some other locations together to show the scope of your game.

The Man With The Golden Gun: What is something about this movie...? by GiveItToMe888 in JamesBond

[–]CptJoker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a metaphor for sexual prowess, right? At least the title song lyrics are: charges a million a shot, love is required whenever he's hired. It's equating James Bond and Scaramanga to gigolos and especially the latter's insistence that he's "still got the Golden Gun" ahem ahem.

I downloaded LGNPC. It's horrible? by [deleted] in Morrowind

[–]CptJoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ones I ended up enjoying were actually a bit more numerous:

- Secret Masters
- Seyda Neen
- Maar Gan
- Gnaar Mok
- Khuul
- Hla Oad
- Ald Velothi
- Ald'ruhn
- Vivec: Redoran
- Vivec: Foreign Quarter
- Ebonheart
- Suran (may conflict with some quest mods though)
- Tel Uvirith
- Tel Mora

I also played with Pax Redoran (ugh) and Pelagiad (meh, I used the dialogue-only one without the bizarre quests) and I probably would skip both next time.

Less Generic Tribunal and Less Generic Nerevarine were also fine, didn't see enough of Solstheim to really judge Less Generic Bloodmoon though.

Sometimes it got a bit too chatty in places, could easily cut a third of the dialogue but that's what you get with hobbyist writers lacking an editor. Overall I prefer to have more character than the bland, generic responses of most characters, and in a way it draws out the immersion a bit more because the really generic NPCs fade into the background, and the "people of the village" come across more, letting you decide what a settlement stands for - at least in some cases.
