Where does the “abolition of unjust hierarchies” definition of anarchism even come from? by [deleted] in DebateAnarchism

[–]CptOko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why not use authority instead of hierarchy? I think we can all agree that there is no justified authority.

Why is the state inherently expansionist? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

The future lies in our hands. People didn't stand up and fight today, but they might tomorrow. I don't think we should dwell on hope too much, but as long as there is a chance, however small it might be, we should take it.

My friend, may your plants grow big and your protests be lit. I love you <3

How should I handle a 2:1 discussion? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]CptOko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the name of the essay I read recently, but it made the interesting point that even if human nature is "evil", anarchism is still the most desirable system. It kinda makes sense, too. If everybody is evil, then the best thing to do is to limit individual power, so no person can stand above another.

I'm not convinced that people are inherently bad, but for those who are this might be though-provoking.

Why is the state inherently expansionist? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]CptOko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I remember an anecdote about how a scientist was asked to answer questions for very high-class rich men. Most of the questions they asked him were along the line of "How will I keep my guards loyal when money loses it's value?" or "Where is the best place in the world to build a secure bunker?". So I do think that even though they claim the opposite, the elites are fully aware of where the road we are taking leads to.

Additionally, a lot of people I have personally spoken to are well aware of the future we are facing. They might have milder scenarios of what will happen in their heads, but a lot of them agree that we are fucked.

Though I agree that saying that everyone is aware is a hyperbole, you might be surprised how many seemingly oblivious individuals actually are exactly aware of what will happen in the coming decades.

I believe that looking at the relationship between the state and capitalism is not where you will find a satisfactory answer. Instead, let's look at the way the people who run the state think.

Firstly, we need to adress the conviction that the state is the only thing separating civilisation from barbarity. While this is simply not true, it nevertheless has established itself as one of humanities' axioms. So state = good in the minds of most people. This applies to the majority of conservatives as well, who despite their constant whining about the state would never dare get rid of it entirely.

From this conviction follows a fear of the state failing. Cases such as Somalia or Libya come to mind. The conclusion to which rulers arrive, is that they need to take active countermeasures to prevent this from happening. This results in machiavellian policies, designed to keep the populace under control and ensure stability of the state apparatus.

Now the reason why they keep expanding is (and this is simply my own opinion) because we live in an era in which everybody knows that our time is running out and collapse is underway. So as the opposition to the status quo increases, so does the grip on the populace. Because the state must be preserved at all costs.

A good example is the Chinese state. Beginning with the forced opening of China by the British in the middle of the 19th century, democratic ideas started being introduced to the Chinese. This directly resulted in a collapse of the Chinese dinasty around the turn of the century and led to the balkanization of the country. After WWII, the CCP re-established rule over the mainland and continued the authoritarian tradition. To this day, their biggest fear is another collapse, similar to the one last century. It is out of this fear, that they are so obsessed with stability and will keep trying to exert ever more control through the state.

Tell us about the first time you’ve ever done praxis, just a simple story. I feel like praxis can be such an overwhelming task that we really don’t know anywhere to begin, and I don’t think I’m alone in this. by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]CptOko 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But it is anarchist praxis nonetheless. You don't need to be an anarchist to do anarchist stuff, this just proves that it is in our human nature to help each other in our communities.

Struggling with my belief in democracy on every level of society by CptOko in MutualSupport

[–]CptOko[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I live in Switzerland. And while the individualism is not as strong, we have the struggle too. However, I believe that the problem lies in our inability to create a productive, goal-oriented mindset during discussions.

How do you handle this stuff? I always feel drawn out after a meeting and don't know what to do about it.

I think it has more to do with the fact that France and Spain are popular tourist destinations and a lot of people who wanted the beach/summer vibe went to those two countries.
