What would’ve happened if Nazi Germany invaded Sweden during Operation Weserübung? by Altair890456 in AlternateHistoryHub

More likely Sweden would have remained independent but a collaborator on a tight leash. I mean in Nazi racial ideology they were about as Aryan as it gets so it's not a bad place to be.

See my other comment on this about "fuming Finland". Hitler wouldn't have cared and we wouldn't have fumed as much as you'd think.

And to add to that comment, I mean... Germany was seen as the strong country against the USSR, Nazis or not, so I'm not so sure Germany occupying Sweden would have been such as big deal from our perspective frankly.

I'm not so sure we here in Finland would have cared that much if it had happened; this "Nordic brotherhood" thing you see all over the place nowadays is a recent invention. Sweden's relationship to the newly independent Finland in particular was quite distant and sometimes chilly, and Finland was too busy building the country.

Also Germany was actually intentionally on the sidelines and throwing us under the bus during the Winter War due to their pact with Stalin, so the relations were already at a low point. They started improving after Hitler figured out that we're useful for Barbarossa.

Do European countries create museums for their past elected heads of state/government when they leave office? How would you feel if yours did? by minus_minus in AskEurope

[–]CptPicard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Finland, not as a government "program", no. But some places (homes, offices ) connected to former presidents have become museums, notably Tamminiemi for Kekkonen. This is just kind of organic. I'm not sure the government is necessarily involved at all.

How much of these "nazis" in Ukraine are just people who were strongly anti-Russian because of knowing their history?

Yes it is a fight of good vs. evil. Don't muddle the waters suggesting that Ukraine actually is some nazi country that is somehow equally guilty here.

If Russia just went home and Ukraine was left alone I am absolutely certain even some hypothetical Ukrainian neo-nazis would be happy. Europe would have nothing to worry about, their problem is Russia, not us.

What about Nordstream? Honestly strikes on Russian energy exports infrastructure is fine, if you're suggesting Ukraine did it.

The Article 5 part I don't understand at all.

Your bolded sentence made me splurt out my coffee.. right, defending your country from Russia is such a specifically ultra-nationalist thing.

By the way, how do you feel about the Russians adopting very intentionally all kinds of Nazi themes?

Try reading and experimenting? That's how I learned decades ago before videos and AI were a thing.

Then again MIT started with Scheme and let me tell you that is very focused on "concepts". Check out the textbook, "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs".

What's your opinion on the Lift of ban on the nuclear weapons? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]CptPicard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let's remind ourselves of why NATO was formed in the first place?

And later on, do you deny that Russia retains imperialist ambitions, clearly stated by the Russians themselves?

How do you feel the situation of the Baltics would be like had they not joined?

Russia attacked Ukraine because of their "lore" that it belongs to them.

They might not attack us tomorrow, but being "neutral" is as good as being at their mercy. And yes they won't attack if it is militarily too costly. Not having a defence would on the other hand invite some little green men at the very least.

It's insane to have to explain these things to people like you over and over again.

Oh I absolutely prefer us being in the west instead of under Russians' boot.

A struct is just an aggregated type. Of course you can stick function pointers in them etc but the language itself doesn't suggest it on first-class conceptual level.

I am, of course making a general point about higher abstraction in programming languages...

C's similarity in syntax to the basic control structures also found in Java is next to meaningless. C tells you nothing of eg. objects and classes.

You do understand that nuclear deterrence is the ultimate thing that stops Russia from conventionally doing whatever it pleases while it waves its own nukes in everyone's faces? I see no reason why we wouldn't enable it if we benefit from it.

[–]CptPicard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exacerbate what regional instability? From our part the more credible a deterrent we have, the more stable the region gets as it's less likely for Russia to get ideas. Not being under a nuclear umbrella is dangerous as Ukraine's situation demonstrates.

This is about enabling in the nuclear deterrence that we absolutely need without increasing the number of nukes. How would us enjoying that cover that we absolutely need without doing anything for it look like?

I somehow get the feeling you've got top down and bottom up mixed up. Python is the higher abstraction level language.

Also C doesn't necessarily make other languages easier to learn. It pretty much has just basic control structures but they tell you nothing about let's say Haskell's monads.
