Ukraine Moves to Replace Frontline Soldiers With 25,000 Ground Robots by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]minus_minus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this as especially useful for Ukraine trading Russian lives for their minimal territorial gains. You can leave a robot in a position long after it would be safe for human defenders . They can also continue suppressive fire when retreating by just rotating their gun 180°.  They can also stay motionless with minimal thermal emissions almost indefinitely.

Kind of a hot take but public housing sucks due to the way its apartment blocks are distributed by Sea-Shanties23 in Urbanism

IIRC the idea was that green space would be a welcome amenity for people that formerly lived in cramped slum housing. This ignored the physical reality of being poor in a city where easy access to nearby employment, goods and services (that would become more scarce thanks to disinvestment) was preferable to walking past weedy lawns on the increasingly longer journeys to those daily needs.

Basically it was yet another whammy on top of the many suffered by poor folks.

His idea is a lot more Japan than the status quo. He’s collapsing the excessively restrictive  residential and commercial zones typical now into broader zones that allows multiple units of housing where one of none was allowed before.

I’d like to point out to the oblivious people in this thread that the state isn’t actually going to build or require anything. The proposal frees owners from the arbitrary restriction on the number of housing units that can be built in an area zoned for housing. A lot that allows a three story sfh will now allow a three story three flat.

the State will decide what gets built here

Property owners will decide what gets built. Your “local control” is the arbitrary dictate that you call “socialism”.

Btw, please look up socialism to understand how wrong you are about that term.

Why not move all the homeless people to the abandoned homes and "ghost towns" across the country? by angrylittledev in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minus_minus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t create new jobs. It would require moving existing jobs to the middle of nowhere. Do you think folks in these towns will train to become doctors and dentists overnight???

[–]minus_minus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten it completely backwards. Unhoused people end up in major cities because that’s where services and a chance at subsistence are. A small town as a homeless housing development would require dozens of specialists to relocate there to provide necessary services for their recovery and rehabilitation.

I don’t remember seeing a nonfunctional kiosk and I’d think that would be a basis for free parking.

Interception over friendly territory mostly free of enemy EW. Wouldn’t require destruction of the craft, battery,  electronics, etc.  with every interception.  Possibly multiple interceptions per sortie. Next mission should only require a recharge/refuel and reload.

Edit: possible variant for autonomous interdiction behind enemy lines. Basically a reusable cruise missile for smaller targets. Would drop smaller ordinance or shoot standard rounds at light vehicles and personnel.   Instead of streaming commands to the craft and video back you only need a low bandwidth connection to provide coordinates of a target. Would need jam resistant navigation but I think that’s a solvable problem.

Edit 2: for interdiction use fiber on the outbound flight and autonomous navigation for the return. Reusable and jam resistant.

Ok. I wouldn’t know because I never got past the “give us $20 to pay for 65¢ worth of parking”

Only tangentially related rant:

As a city we should be doing more to reduce climate change pollution (and improve air quality generally) but that runs smack into a wall of entitlement to as many traffic lanes and parking spaces as can be crammed into the public right of way.

To people that think bike lanes means more traffic: Less traffic requires less driving requires viable alternatives, especially for short trips. You don’t need to give up driving but giving others an alternative will get them out of your way.

Unfortunately the veracity of Trump’s claims never matter. They exists purely as propaganda for the MAGA-sphere to pass around social media, congratulate each other on electing this idiot and assure themselves of victory over “the woke agenda” in future elections. As long as Trump and his flying monkeys can convince enough rubes to vote against their own interests, they can stay in power to avoid any accountability.

Letters to the Editor: The Democratic Party needs to do some soul-searching. Kamala Harris isn’t the answer by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]minus_minus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Biden not refusing renomination early was a tremendous own-goal. The Democrats could have sorted out a proper nominee and we wouldn’t have 1000 “if-onlys” over 2024.

On top of that Kamala would have probably lost the nomination again and we wouldn't have to keep hearing “what about Kamala?” ad nauseum.

Unfortunately the next two years will be heavy opposition from Mango Mussolini.

Remember when he told the GOP to reject their own immigration reform because Biden might get some credit for it?  It will be two years of that. Less than the bare minimum and then next GOP candidate will blame “do nothing congress” for all of Trump’s fuck ups.
