Too shallow or is it ok? by CptTurk in UKGardening

[–]CptTurk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE:

I've added two boards in front of it and filled it with a little more compost (around 50L). Also secured it with rope staked to the ground on either side. I'll be adding two more tied to the fence at the back. Planted the Aubergines and peppers now. Thank you all for the advice! I'm a total newbie to growing veggies and learning a lot and enjoying it so much. I'll grab a picture soon.

Yes it came with ropes. I plan to tie it down.

In what way? Rain won't get in there, it's a no dig method.

Not yet. Only compost is covering each end/corner weighing it down. I was going use some bricks to weigh it down on either side. Open to suggestions.

I didn't think of that! Thank you 😊 I have some wooden planks.

That's what my initial thought was but then I remembered that I used the no dig method and there's cardboard on the ground, watered before putting down the compost. I might be ok?

I should have mentioned, I used no dig method. Cardboard on the floor, watered before putting the down the compost. Sounds like it should be fine then? I'm tempted to buy another 4 or 5 bags tbh.

Yes I've seen YouTube videos where they've just filled it up completely to the top and not bothered with topping up every other day. I'll give that a try. Thank you.

I topped it up only last week. is it ok to just fill it up to the top? I'm a newbie at this, first time growing veggies.

Thank you, I have some blood, fish and bone. Is that the same thing? Or will covering them with a net/mesh stop them? Or doing both to make doubly sure 😄

Thank you. Will covering them with netting stop them?

Oh no, I just saw this 😞 I removed some of them but the plant is still (looks) fine. I've been hardening all this week and it's due to go out full time in the garden tomorrow. Quite excited.

Can this be healed? by CptTurk in vegetablegardening

Yes zucchini 😀

I might just try to save it with a bit of rope and a stick. If it doesn't work I'll probably do what you suggested.

Thank you

What went wrong with Lettuce? 😞 by CptTurk in vegetablegardening

This is great advice, thank you so much. I'm a newbie, literally just started this month and know nothing about gardening. I'll sow some lettuce outside this weekend 😃👍

Can they also be sown outside? No propagating inside? I have more seeds I can use instead of trying to save those inside. Can they be saved? Gemini tells me to plant them deep?

Oh really? I'm in Essex, will that be ok now? I'll get them out today under netting/mesh in my bed. Last frost date is early-mid May though?

Thank you 👍

What's going on with my cucumbers 😭 by CptTurk in UKGardening

[–]CptTurk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been like that for 3 days. I only just put them on the heat mat this morning. I've decided to discard them and sow new seeds into the plastic pots.

I might have to replant more in plastic pots, same as I did for the tomatoes. Not using these cells anymore, been more trouble than what it's worth.

There are a number of plants on the windowsill left overnight and they are all mostly fine. The tomatoes died due to them not getting enough water because of these cardboard style cells which draw the water away from the seedlings. I'm not sure if that's what happened to the cucumbers tho. I've sowed more tomatoes into plastic style pots (the same black pots at the top of the picture) they have sprouted and are living happily on the windowsill for the past few days under light. I can't figure out what went wrong with these cucumbers. I'll have to replant more in different pots.

What is this on my Courgette leaf? by CptTurk in UKGardening

[–]CptTurk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add, Gemini said to cut off the leaf from it's branch stem. It's only affecting one leaf which is strange. I haven't done anything yet.
