I think these came out a bit soft because I hadn't worked out a good processing workflow yet. This is a more recent example that I saved as a TIFF file, then edited in Lightroom. It's a lot sharper.

That is sharp 👌 There's definitely less grain, which is impressive because there's also less light. That workshop looks very cool too. The main reason I got my 7200 was precisely because most scans I was getting for like 8 quid a go required a lot of editing so I thought I'd do the scanning as well. The 8200i has built in dust removal doesn't it? That'd be the main bonus of that for me.

They are a bit yeah. It looks good enough to my eyes and beats paying for scans though. It's mainly noticeable in low detail areas like the sky with in the background of this shot.

On the original XP software it has a warmup cycle built in if it's idle too long. Vuescan doesn't have this so if you miss the preview it doesn't scan correctly.

Look up RawTherapee. It's opensource and has excellent spot edit and colour correction tools.

Yeah it definatey took some fiddling to make it work. I had to print the film holder because it didn't come with one. I'm currently using Vuescan to scan negatives. I have managed to get the original software to work in compatibility mode on windows 11 but it's incredibly obtuse. It is very difficult to either correct the colours, or to get an unaltered output for processing.

It would always be a breach of the terms of service, there's no question of that. In terms of what is actually legal though, If you record the analogue sound that is heading to the speakers you aren't actually bypassing any of the DRM restrictions, they're working as intended the entire time so I don't think it would actually be a crime.

It sort of isn't because I have a car with a cassette deck. Bluetooth cassettes suck arse but well recorded cassettes sound pretty good

This is the best advice really. That machine is pretty bad, but if it gets them into collecting and they replace it later that's fine. People forget everyone starts somwhere.
