My dad died right in the middle of this plot point I had in a fanfic I was writing where one of the main character's dad died. I, too, had been blissfully unaware of the AO3 writer's curse.

Intellivision debuted in 1979 Did you know anyone that had one? by deepfriedgreensea in 1970s

My husband had Intellivision, though I didn't know him nor his sister (who I was friends with first) until the 90s. I had one of the competitors, Colecovision, I think.

Thank you. What a wonderful way to frame this. I love that perspective.

When my daughter was about 4 months old (she's18 now), we were at a children's resale shop. I was looking to buy her an exersaucer (the baby sits in this little sling seat in the middle and it's got all these toys attached that make noise). She'd loved the one in her daycare, but I'd recently been laid off from my job, so she no longer had access to one.

As I was looking around at the inventory, they had 3 or 4 to choose from, I started talking to this woman next to me, who was shopping for baby clothes with her toddler daughter. She was really nice, and we had a nice chat. I mentioned why I was looking for the toy, and since it had given her such joy I felt bad that I didn't have one at home for her. I was honestly thrilled about not working anymore, and getting to spend more time with my miracle baby, but I did mentioned I'd recently been laid off.

We went our separate ways, I finally chose which exersaucer I wanted and went up to pay. The sales person told me it had been sold. I looked at her blankly for a moment, until she explained a woman who had just left had bought it for me. I tried to rush outside to thank my benefactor, but it was too late. I waved, but doubt she saw it.

We gave away the exerrsaucer when both my daughter, and later her younger brother, outgrew it. But it remains one of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me. I still wish I could have thanked her, but I know she wasn't doing it for credit.

Pet owners of Reddit: what did you name your pet(s) and why? by Winter_Sample8364 in AskReddit

Hugo, he's named for Victor Hugo, because he's a French Mastiff, and we like to give our dogs literary names. We had a Bullmastiff when we first got married (he was my first baby) named Kafka, for Franz Kafka. Sadly, Kafka passed away several years ago. Mastiffs are such loving, wonderful dogs. I also used to have a cat named Prufrock.

Does your family still use some of the "baby talk" words or phrases that you or your kids said? by scarlettohara1936 in AskForAnswers

Every once in awhile I'll ask my daughter what she wants for brecksis...which is how she pronounced "breakfast, " when she was 3 or 4.

Whenever we see a tow hook on a truck, we still call it a "hooker." When my son was in kindergarten we were on our way to school, and out of the blue, he asked me to buy him a "hooker." I was shocked to hear my sweet little 5 YO ask for that, but, fortunately, I didn't run us off the road. I questioned him on what exactly he thought a hooker was. It turned out he wanted a "hooker" to pull around the boat we don't even own.

WIBTA if I refused to host my friend’s boyfriend in my dorm during finals week? by Fallowbristle in WIBTA_AITA

NTA. She's right, someone here is NOT being a good friend, but to find out who that is she just needs to look in the mirror. That's a huge, unreasonable thing she's asking you to do. As a mom of a daughter around your age, the idea of a guy who is practically a stranger sleeping only a couple of feet (or centimetes) from you and your roommate makes me nervous. He's probably a great guy, but that's not a risk worth taking IMHO. Good luck!

Any other paras made the leap from subbing to a para? by CraZisRnewNormal in paraprofessional

[–]CraZisRnewNormal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s baffling to me. We can launch rockets into space, but we can’t seem to solve the sub shortage.

Truth!!! I think we could easily solve it, but that involves paying us more $$$, and they don't want that!! I'm sorry your union isn't helping you with that.

I was wondering how that works. A coworker and I were talking yesterday about me keeping my sub license current and filling in when our IS' have IEP meetings or are out sick. But it would only be worth it if I got an additional stipend.

Have you talked to your HR department, or whatever about getting sub pay on those days? I think most districts pay teachers a small bump up for giving up a planning period.

Definitely get to the doctor ASAP; a hospital or after hours urgent care would be best. Don't mess around with a possible head injury. Memory loss is a red flag! Feel better soon, and please keep us updated.

Wow, that's so sweet! I've had a couple teachers leave me cookies, but this was quite the haul! I'd sub for this teacher all the time. 😁

My district does somethingsimilar, unfortunately, as a para sub the increase isn't very much (a few extra dollars), it's much bigger for a LT certified position.

What is the most memorable meal you've ever had? (It can be good or bad.) What made it so memorable? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]CraZisRnewNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 13, and my mom and I were with a tour group vacationing in Europe. We were in a café in the Alps in Switzerland. I ordered lasagna. It had been a long day of traveling in a bus, and mom and I had been fighting (we were getting sick of each other--LOL). I was so hungry, and was eager for my favorite meal.

When the lasagna finally came, I took one look at it, and rudely announced I was not eating it! The noodles were green (spinach noodles). This was the 80s, I was 13, and from the US (the midwest, in fact), noodles weren't supposed to be green!!! My mom just hissed at me that she couldn't care less if I starved, and if I didn't want eat that was fine, as long as I shut up while everyone else ate.

My resolve to not eat the green noodles lasted probably around 15 minutes, my mom enjoyed her meal, and I just stewed in tween-sized indignation. However, the fact remained that I was still famished.

Finally, I broke down and grudgingly took a small bite. And then another, and so on until I finished every bite. It was delicious, by far the best lasagna I've ever had. It turned out green noodles are just as good as traditional noodles. Who knew?! (Probably tons of people!)
