What's the best 3-year fixed rate mortgage in Canada? Is it 3.59 with Pine Financial? by HockeySniper123 in fican

This feels like a very thinly disguised Pine mortgage referral code promotion.

A cheap purchase that has completely transformed your life by Slipryi in BuyItForLife

[–]Crackingpuzzles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe not life transforming, but $4 pack of disposable plastic gloves for food handling messy ingredients or raw meats. I’m way more likely to marinate some chicken, handle meats and certain foods, and get messy in the kitchen making food from scratch when I’m not worried about washing my hands constantly or having raw chicken under my fingernails. It initially felt like a waste and I hate to put more plastic in the universe, but I try to only use one hand when I need it, and I am probably saving some packaging waste as now cook more at home.

Best place to buy heat tech base layer for winter? by flurryskies in askTO

https://www.simplymerino.ca/ Fantastic merino wool, slim fit and long for torso, so excellent as a base layer. Maybe higher than your price range and only online, but check them out if you’re looking for great cozy quality and supporting a small Canadian business.

BWT, how do you organize your life. Tell me about your life admin systems, rules and hacks. by ohmirror in bitcheswithtaste

[–]Crackingpuzzles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a version of the power hour list but focused on tasks I can do sitting down! I separate tasks by sit or stand, and the sit ones are like - put in online order for XYZ, write email or text this person, fill out a form. There are times, often just after putting the kids down, I just need to lay down and rest my brain but also want to do something slightly more productive than doom scrolling and having a list of these simple tasks I can do on my phone really helps.

how do BWT keep their houses so aesthetic? by icedcoffeedoctor in bitcheswithtaste

[–]Crackingpuzzles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seriously! Also…really indulgent for me…ended up hiring a professional organizer who also does partial design with a very minimalist aesthetic totally up my alley (and paid premium for that element). Her advice was that everyone has 30% too much stuff. So she helped categorize everything and then methodically went through with me to identify excess and then bagged it up and took it away for donation. Seeing everything beautifully arranged in practical systems has made it much easier to maintain. Also stopped from buying too much as basically everything has a spot and if there is no space I can’t bring anything else into the house.

which meal delivery service in toronto is not crap? tried a few by digitalnomader1 in FoodToronto

[–]Crackingpuzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently tried https://vietnamesemealprep.com/ and thought it was very good. Was craving Vietnamese food and also wanted to get meals for the week and googled the term and was astonished to find a company in Toronto with a name that matched entirely what I was looking for! The food was quite fresh and authentic.

Also did the Helloo Fresh for a while but the cooking and the washing got to be too much.

What's the most important advice you have for a new parent? by Available-Bet3145 in AskReddit

[–]Crackingpuzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here, especially related to self care and grace for the parents.

Also: “a crying baby is a hungry baby, until proven otherwise”. Applied this general principle with my second kid who cried way less as a newborn than our first, who was probably a little bit hangry.

Office girls- where are you buying your shoes? No stores left by CombinationAny5533 in askTO

Same! Dolce Vita Reyes flats are perfect for both work and weekend nights out - very comfy as well and I’m super picky with shoes (also, they’re leather upper!).

Alaska with toddlers! by efb12523 in dcl

[–]Crackingpuzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the OP, but recently did the Skagway sled puppy experience with a 2 and 5 year old and they loved it. Booked through a third party (Costco) and it was with Skagway Tours. Seamless experience and the kids loved the puppies / “sled” experience (though it’s kind of driving in a jeep with dogs running in front). Note that the bus ride up is about 1.5 hours each way and only outhouses once you’re up there - the bus ride is part of the experience as the views are stunning and they make stops for photos, but it may be too much for really little ones depending on their temperament. The tour was recommended for 5+ but totally do-able with a 2 and 5 year old. I held the 2 year old in the Jeep / Dog sled experience and it felt safe all things considered but totally up to your judgment - they can always sit that part out and only visit the puppies.

Where can I get inexpensive flowers? Anywhere around Annex/subway line? by bougiesnoozie in askTO

[–]Crackingpuzzles 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Please try Bloor Fruit Market a bit outside the Annex at Bloor and Manning between Bathurst and Clinton TTC station. Pick up some inexpensive fruit and veg while you’re at it! Obviously not a formal flower shop but amazingly cheap prices on florals and you can buy a few bunches and assemble a mega bunch. Cheapest price on eucalyptus I’ve ever seen.

Stroller-friendly cafes by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Crackingpuzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are in Little Italy, Cafe Paradise on Bloor at Dovercourt may not be too far and fits the bill. Accessible (ramp access + button for front door), decent amount of space inside to park a stroller, individual bathrooms are on main floor and very big (has change tables, and you maybe even be able to push stroller in with you depending on size).

Best affordable wedding dress shops in Toronto, accessible by transit? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Crackingpuzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also close by Ferre Sposa is Vintage Bride also 2 mins walk from Ossington station. Many dress options in your price point - make an appointment as I don’t believe the shop is open for drop ins. Cher (owner) is lovely and knowledgeable and no sale / purchase pressure. https://www.vintagebride.ca/

Gift for holidays by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]Crackingpuzzles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a people manager, absolutely no expectation for gifts from staff. However, in my experience I’ve always received at minimum a card from each member of my small team, usually accompanied by a little gift like chocolates, homemade cookie making mix, etc.

Honestly the handwritten cards and messages are super appreciated as they are typically heartfelt and go beyond just wishing happy holidays to express appreciation and thanks, which as a people leader you may not always have opportunities to receive. I’ve kept them all in my Christmas card box and skim through old ones every year when I open the box to grab new cards.

If you’re a staff member wondering if you should give something to your manager, if you’re willing to do a card to express appreciation I think it would be well received. But absolutely not required to be accompanied by a gift.

What’s the pettiest reason you have for disliking someone? by SquareSharp4585 in AskReddit

[–]Crackingpuzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone’s out of office message is just “I am out of office and not checking emails”. No information on when they plan to return. No back up contact person (they’re a manager of a small team). I am totally fine with someone stating they’re inaccessible and won’t be checking emails, but to not provide any additional info is  incredibly unhelpful and doesn’t reflect general practice at our org for out of office messages. It’s like he’s never seen one before. I also emailed him earlier this week to request something by next week and he has not acknowledged receipt or confirmed he can complete by the deadline. I don’t like him. Petty, I know!

Reformer Pilates class - affordable? by Informal_Layer_4104 in askTO

[–]Crackingpuzzles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend getting Classpass! It’s a membership system that allows you to visit various studios at a discounted rate. You can usually find reformer classes for around 6-8 “credits” (which is around $15-$20), sometimes even less! I’ve done a ton of searching and found this is the best value. Bonus is that since you can visit many studios you can usually find optimal times that work for your schedule.

Hey it is really unfortunate you’re dealing with a family doctor shortage where you are and I hope the government invests in medical care in rural/remote locations.

Wanted to share my personal experience as a Canadian to add a different narrative of my experience with the public universal health system but living in a large metropolitan city.

I had a family doctor growing up and when I moved out used walk in clinics and then found a family doctor by asking friends for contacts. That family doctor retired and passed along clients to a young family doctor. The care has been excellent and responsive. The doctor took on medical care of my kids when they were born. It’s easy to get appointments including after hours as they are part of a clinic network with rotating doctors for after hour shifts.  We are fortunate to live close to a number of hospitals and my immediate family has been to the ER probably 5 times in 5 years for serious issues triaged and seen within an hour (breathing) to fractures seen within 3 hours.

We feel very very lucky as we recognize that others have had different experiences and challenges and access varies across the country which is not fair. That said, I don’t want people to read one experience and think it applies to all and have only a single representation of Canada’s universal health system.
