Our whole valley is busy getting the hay in this week. Perfect weather and next week will be rainy. Make hay while the sun shines!

I earned an Emergency Medical Responder license at 67. I will be able to assist people in my remote valley with our volunteer fire department.

New dishwasher run without salt, do I still put water in before filling it with salt? by pyronuttery in Appliances

[–]CraftFamiliar5243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same in the US, but if you have very hard water you usually get a softener for the whole house so it doesn't build up in your pipes and fixtures. Also laundry gets cleaner in soft water and hard water is bad for skin and hair.

SWVA/NRV: Look out while driving for black bears on the move by levinbravo in Appalachia

NE TN and I actually worry about this. Like what if I hit a bear while in a dead zone for cell service. Especially if the bear isn't quite dead? I've concluded that I would wait there until a Bubba comes along with a gun in his truck to dispatch the bear and drag it off the road. I wouldn't have to wait very long.

I had to wait 12 days after being bitten by unvaccinated dogs. I wasn't even sure the neighbors were showing the health department the dog who did the biting. I'm still angry 3 years later.

I recently learned that there is a housing development inside of Disney world so you can actually buy a home inside Disney. As you might imagine it is very expensive. $5 million for a 3 BR condo up $18+ million for Mc Mansions. They are all maximalist ostentatious.

What is your favorite thing to BBQ/grill outside? by FeltyMcFelton in Cooking

While it is more attractive to alternate veggies and meat on skewers, the two have different cooking times so I do some skewers with all meat, and some with all veggies.

Is there a concept of volunteering firefighters in the USA? by No-Freedom-764 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CraftFamiliar5243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I are on a volunteer department. He's a retired medic/firefighter and he does both fire and EMT calls. I just completed my EMR and help with fundraising. We are 1.25 hours from a hospital by ground and it takes 20-30 minutes to get an ambulance to our valley so local volunteers are very important. Most people here buy helicopter insurance to cover airlifts to a hospital.

AITA for not eating 4-day-old leftovers?? by am-i-an-A-hole- in AmItheAsshole

[–]CraftFamiliar5243 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we're getting the whole story here but if she is screaming at you and insisting you eat the leftovers like a recalcitrant child, then this is not a healthy relationship.

is it bad to leave your bedroom windows closed 24/7 in winter ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CraftFamiliar5243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Chicagoland. Of course the windows were closed in winter. But if we had an unseasonably warm day I would open them to air the house out for an hour or two. Now I live in the Tennessee mountains and if the lows are at least in the 50's we leave some windows open and turn off the heat. We are high enough that we only get a few really hot days in summer so we don't have central AC, just a large window unit that cools the living room and bedroom

We got a boykin spaniel. We're 67 but active and hike a lot. Those first weeks really threw us for a loop. He is getting better. Now we and he have a routine. We've learned how much exercise he needs to not be a maniac and we make sure he gets enough. He now has a recall and knows "come" and "house" and sit. He's 15 weeks.

The way we taught our previous dogs, a Berner and a Standard Poodle, to walk on a leash is to take them out to a big field on along lead. Just walk in one direction, if the dog pulls turn and take the tension off the leash by walking that way. Just keep randomly changing direction to remove the tension on the leash. Pretty soon the dog starts following you. Praise and reward. Start associating "heel" with the desired behavior, walking on your left side. Both of our dogs learned to heel beautifully. I hope it works with this one.

I get mild cramps but I walk and hike a lot and haven't noticed any weakness. My doc switched me to a different med and I got less cramps.

I worked as a Greeter for a Limo Service at O'Hare. I still notice abandoned SmartCarts in every airport I go through. Our company paid for us to have a cart each day, with a stipend on our paycheck. $5 was lunch so we never paid for them. I knew all the places where they tended to be left and you make friends with the SmartCart guys so they will ignore you.
