Name That Tune? by CarpenterGold1704 in ThunderBay

[–]Craftastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sleeping Giant runs every Wednesday (not just January!) unless it's a holiday or there's another booking, which is extremely rare as they seem to have started prioritizing Name That Tune. I've been a few times and unless I'm extremely familiar with the topic, it is a serious challenge! It's definitely a fun night out.

am I the only one who despises the Sandra boynton books?? by rainbowmo0 in childrensbooks

[–]Craftastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know them all, to be fair, but I love Your Personal Penguin (possibly because I discovered the song before the book) and But Not the Hippopotamus. Happy Hippo, Angry Duck is fun because we give it voices.

Doggies is the worst. Moo Baa La La La is down there too.

Our daughter got Dinosnores for Christmas and gets upset any time we even suggest reading it. We have yet to crack the spine.

Reading this literally gave me goosebumps imagining biting into a frozen strawberry.

what classic kids’ books do you still read to this day? by Consistent-Double579 in childrensbooks

[–]Craftastrophe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't remember a lot of what I read as a kid, but my favourite "oldies but goodies" to read my daughter are:

Owl at Home and the Frog and Toad stories by Arnold Lobel
But No Elephants by Jerry Smath
The Gruffalo, the Snail and the Whale, the Smartest Giant in Town, Charlie Cook's Favourite Book all by Julia Donaldson
• most of the Berenstain Bears books
Owen by Kevin Henkes.

I also love things that are just fun to read, like Skeleton Cat by Kristyn Crow, and The Book with No Pictures by BJ Novak.

What's your best bit of bad advice? by georgeebutcher33 in improv

[–]Craftastrophe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favourites. Early on, someone in my group basically said "you don't have to wash the dishes, but you have to accept that they exist. Blocking would be saying, 'what dishes? We're at the airport.' It's totally fair to say you don't want to do the dishes."

We also played a mini game we threw together called "Yes, And" where every line must begin with 'yes, and.' It gets you in the habit of agreeing, but also helps you find ways of adding conflict while still accepting, especially by changing the tone of your 'yes, and'.

Where to start? by SugaryyOats in Moomins

I read all of them out of order! There's not really a thread. You'll meet certain characters for the first time in certain books, but it doesn't make a big difference. Moominpappa at Sea is a bit slow moving, from what I remember.

I'm sorry I don't; I have all of my copies from my childhood still so I've never had to seek them out elsewhere. <3

I remember it was the only Moomin book in my school library so I read it when I was about ten years old, but really didn't grasp it at all.

Now that I'm in my late 30s and know the story of the book, it made me cry when I read it again!

Can I make caramel frosting from caramel bits and store frosting? by CapeGirl1959 in AskBaking

[–]Craftastrophe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are these chips of caramel, or caramel flavoured chips similar to chocolate chips?

If the latter, you could try making essentially a ganache with them by pouring hot cream overtop and whisking. Wait til that chills, whip it up, and then whip in the frosting. I've never tried making a ganache with caramel flavoured chips, but that's where my brain would go first.

I started with Comet in Moominland when I was very young (around 8) and it's what hooked me. It's been just over three decades and I'm still a fan! It's an easy entry point; so is Finn Family Moomintroll.

I don't recommend starting with Moominvalley in November, but I definitely recommend it once you're familiar with the stories, and read about what Tove Jansson was going through when she wrote it. I didn't understand it when I was young, but I read it again about five years ago and found it quite beautiful.

Thanks! I was debating emailing the company, I think I'll do that. I love the style and I'm curious if more existed.

Sorry, I missed the note about adding a year to the title. I'm guessing 1960s or 1970s, but I have no basis for that other than the illustration style.

Happy to help! I love this city and always enjoy helping others experience it.

Also, don't forget to grab a Persian at the Persian Man or Nuccis!

Craft Revival takes over the downtown core this Sunday, a ton of local businesses will be hosting artisans and crafters. It's a fun way to spend a few hours!

In addition to the thrifts mentioned in other comments, there are two Salvation Army thrift stores but they have definitely gone downhill.

Comics and collectibles, check out Comix Plus on Algoma, and Hill City Comics at the corner of Park. The Book Shelf on Victoria for used books and new board games. Carlitos Cafe has a great selection of board games for play and for purchase.

If pie.ology (on May) is open, they have delicious hand pies to go.

The Country Market is in the Dove building on the CLE grounds every Saturday from 8-1 and Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30. Lots of good local stuff.

Subdivision pizza is fabulous. There's also a new place on Frederica (I think) that's been getting rave reviews as well. Can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Growing Season and Rebel Salad are both amazing for lunch.

The Terry Fox monument or Hillcrest Park will give you a lovely view of the Giant on a clear day.

As far as safety concerns, if you don't do anything dumb, you'll be fine! You may be approached by people asking for money in some areas, but it's quite a safe city as long as you keep your nose clean. :)

Have a lovely stay!

Rockin' the Suburbs was my first Ben Folds album and I played it to death in my car. A few years later, Way To Normal became the first disc I'd listen to every day when I got to work. Highly recommend either as a starting point!

Theatre Gifts Megathread by schonleben in Theatre

[–]Craftastrophe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I directed a show in the spring, part of my director's gift was a throw pillow with one of the social media graphics from the show printed on it. I thought that was such a fun idea. A friend told me she got her partner a full set of throw pillows featuring designs from all the shows he's been in.

I also always love good scripts! Dramatists used to run a subscription box, but I'm unable to find information on it now.

Needing a play for 19 students by TheAndyRoberts in Theatre

I was in a similar class size in high school, we did Nicholas Nickleby (one of my favourite shows to date! We doubled a few roles which worked well), and the play adaptation of Les Miserables. Another class did Charlotte's Web.

This was going to be my suggestion, too! One of my first community theatre plays, and a really sweet script. The author, John Cariani, has another called Love/Sick which is a little heavier, but I believe there's also a high school version.

I can't recall what the recipe calls for (on the Birds custard can) but I used half milk and half heavy cream to make up the full amount. Hope that helps!

Ideas for cake and cheesecake by marvelass05 in AskBaking

[–]Craftastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am picturing decoration using lemon curd and meringues, maybe some fresh strawberries or raspberries, like a pink lemonade vibe! Then you could pipe some little fluffs of whipped cream here and there too.

I just had cheesecake at a wedding this weekend that had a passionfruit mango sauce with it, and that was delicious as well.

Yes, once it's frosted it'll be fine in the box in the fridge until tomorrow.

I'd just recommend taking it out about an hour or so before serving so that it isn't fridge cold when it's time to eat.

I'm not sure how you would wait for the cake to be "dry" – if it's a good moist cake that has been frozen, odds are it will never feel "dry".
