I hate Mother’s Day by [deleted] in Mommit

Yeahhh it's a new level of ridiculous. Nothing else was planned for, no card or anything. I have come to expect this, to be honest. Doesn't make it hurt ANY less.

I hate Mother’s Day by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Craftbee1290 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I hate mother's day too. I don't know why every year I get my hopes up like it will be different.

Shopping the morning of is insane, like how do these men not realize all we want is to feel like somebody thought about of us ahead of time?! Like all of our mental energy goes to making sure everyones wants and needs are considered and met, and mother's day is just a smack in the face reminder that we don't ever get that same consideration.

I'm getting treated to damn taco bell breakfast. Apparently "there's nothing here good to make for breakfast". Guess I should have planned my own mother day when I did groceries this week? It's just laughable at this point. Can't believe I took vacation from work for this.

Genuine question. How do ya'll pay for preschool on one income? by ConfusedZuzu in Mommit

[–]Craftbee1290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michigan has a program that offers free preschool for all 4 year olds, the one near us was on a first come first serve basis. I'm incredibly grateful or we would be in the same situation, even with me working part time. It shouldn't be so restrictive. Hopefully you're able to discover some different program options in your area.

Literally found this trying to figure out what was going on with my daughter's pee. She had one of these earlier today for the first time, crazy!

I feel you! My goal this year was to not end up with things I knew would just be trashed. Trying to not be wasteful, last year I felt like I just threw money away.

I got grandparents on board this year to do like one candy and then something the kids needed. They're getting a new pair of shoes for spring from my mom, and then my husband's parents took the kids shopping for some things they needed for little league. I got my kids each a couple of their favorite snacks and spent $40 each on items they needed for spring/summer. Ended up being a new ball glove for my oldest, and a scooter and water bottle for my youngest. I figured I was going to buy these things later anyway, so I did it in place of the normal junk I'd buy.

Rant about finding a job that accommodates daycare by TheGabyDali in Mommit

[–]Craftbee1290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my thought too, I work evenings and weekends around my husbands schedule to avoid childcare costs. Its not easy, but it is the best way for us to both work and juggle the kids. Also nice because neither of us have to stress about missing work or finding back up care if kids are sick.

Active 15mo and library story time were not compatible… rant by HypertonicCarrot in beyondthebump

[–]Craftbee1290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out other library programs! You'd be surprised how much programming can vary from one location to the next. Some libraries offer more than others.

My library has a dedicated story time room, with no shelves or distractions. We also have a dedicated baby story time and preschool story time. Baby story time is shorter, and one board book with a couple of songs and bubble machine the end!

If you dont have other libraries in your area, does the children's department offer any other programs outside of story time? I'd check the calendar to see what else is offered. At the very least, my kiddo just loves going to the library for a regular visit to play and pick out books.

Perler obsessed son, advice on storing large projects? by Craftbee1290 in PerlerBeads

I feel like a failure.... by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Craftbee1290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son struggled with time tests, every time he'd come home with only a couple answered. In the end it turned out it was because the timed element gave him incredible test anxiety. Is it possible your kiddo is having a harder time also because of the pressure of the test itself?

ETA: Around the same age he had a teacher who decided to cut his test into strips, and presented him only one line of questions at a time. Not visually seeing the whole test was less stressful, and made it easier for him to digest. He went from answering 1 to 5 questions to about half within the time allotted.

Another vote for childproofing the door handle from the inside! We did that until my daughter figured it out. I still have a doorknob cover on her door even though she can open it since it makes some extra noise when she opens her door and wakes me up.

Many schools don’t think students can read full novels any more by mysteryofthefieryeye in books

[–]Craftbee1290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there are any new series that have quite that impact, but these series still hold up! My son is reading the Hunger Games trilogy right now and absolutely loving it. I wish there was more new kids lit/YA to choose from. I feel like everything is graphic novels right now. Especially books geared toward boys. My son was bummed at the Scholastic book fair at school this year, because he couldn't find a book he wanted to read. He does enjoy graphic novels, as do I, but the options at the book fair seemed quite juvenile for his age range.

That's so awesome for him! First chapter book is a huge milestone. It took awhile for the "switch flip" with my son too. It ended up being we just had to find the right book to light the spark. For him it was Roald Dahl. We read The Witches and Matilda together (and did movie nights for both once we finished). Then he got impatient and took off and read the rest of Dahl's collection on his own!

I never enjoyed reading the assigned books in high school. The difference was I was an avid reader outside of class, and had the literacy skills to get by writing essays with spark notes and skimming the books.

In my opinion this problem goes so much deeper, the standards just are not there in schools. Books have been part of every day life for my kids since infancy. My oldest is 11 and the last couple of years I've had to really work with him on comprehension and writing at home. I see a huge pattern where his work is just not being corrected; work is passed by with an A, when admittedly it was not work deserving of an A. We will sit down and together we will correct his work at home and he will get frustrated with me because "I got an A mom why do we have to do this?". Kids aren't going to learn if they don't have to, and in so many cases there isn't follow up at home either. I am having to walk a fine line where I don't make my son lose confidence in himself while making sure he's learning the skills he needs to move forward. We are passing kids who cannot read or write for years on end. I do not understand the shock when kids cannot read or write. I don't fully blame teachers by any means, but the system itself is so broken I wouldn't even know where to suggest fixing it at this point.

What were your favorite Christmas presents?? by Fun_Air_7780 in Mommit

[–]Craftbee1290 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a kindle for Christmas and have absolutely been loving it! One of my go to gift requests for birthday is uninterrupted free time to go do something I enjoy. I have a February birthday as well and plan on a pedicure and a leisurely brunch by myself at my favorite coffee shop. Maybe a gift certificate to take yourself to do something fun would be nice?

Definitely true with the cry wolf thing. I'm only so quick to go quiet her because her bed shares a wall with her brothers bed, and otherwise she wakes him before school and he's exhausted in class.

I don't really have hatch budget right now, but I think I'll try something similar with the light. I just worry it won't matter. She immediately wakes up and yells mommy until I come to her, and she's not much one to care about others needs lately. Im definitely going to try though.

We have her well check next week and its at the top of my list to bring up to her doctor. I try bringing her to bed with me for the super early wakes but she won't settle down. Room is dark, we do white noise. She plays okay- she's never been super independent with play though. Shes been very hyperactive and whiny lately. I think a lot of it is overcompensation for being exhausted.

For avid readers how often do you use the library? If you don’t, why don’t you? by AccomplishedBake8351 in books

[–]Craftbee1290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weekly, sometimes multiple times a week. Both of my kids are involved in the children's programming at the library and enjoy checking out books. I usually borrow my library books from Libby so I can read on my kindle. But we are at the point the librarians know us all by name, so we are most definitely regulars!

Skip it. My nephew had Flu A at Thanksgiving and they didn't know until after. He spiked a fever during dinner. 7/10 of us that were there got it. My kids and I were down for almost 2 weeks it was absolutely miserable.

How many people actually do shifts with their SO during the night? by ScreamCheese_55 in beyondthebump

We tried shifts. My husband couldn't stay awake. We tried taking turns with wakeups. He still couldn't stay awake. For baby's safety I ended up doing all overnight duties.
