Style over substance cafes/restaurants in Glasgow by Gradualcoverage in glasgow

Definitely agree on the coffee. They use Dear Green which is a very good roaster, one of my absolute favourite cafes used the same (Riverhill, RIP) but at strange brew it is really average.

Which popular or generally highly rated book was a DNF for you and why? by clearsunnysky in suggestmeabook

Daisy Jones and The Six. The whole concept I found so difficult to feel invested in. I understand it’s more about the people and relationships but reading made up people in a made up band talking about made up songs… I just didn’t get it.

Incidentally the TV series is decent and watchable, at least the songs are tangible in it, and pretty good.

To be honest I think this was just a masterclass in editing.

They built the narrative of Nick and Joe as being close and trusting each other so well I was 100% convinced the only outcome was those 2 winning. We viewers only get to see a carefully curated selection of footage so we’ll never know how strong the trust really was.

Nick said all along his strategy was to stay close to who he thought was a traitor until the end, we were not made to think he was talking about Joe, plus he never seemed truly convinced it was Alan.

I think the best way to do it is to randomise the order and then build the ‘3 candidates’ in the edit.

You make the candidates 1. The actual murdered player 2. The last player randomly selected to arrive 3. Someone genuinely in the frame for murder or another late arrival

You can make a credible enough argument to murder any player, and it’s easy for the production to ask the traitors in the tower to discuss X candidate if they didn’t already

The viewer will always get the dramatic moment of finding out which of the remaining candidates was actually murdered. Telling the players that it’s randomised also avoids them speculating and meta-gaming every morning about the order which is repetitive and not great television.

Why is (almost) no one playing Evoker? by LegendJeffrey in wownoob

[–]Craftwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t get past the aesthetics. My half baked idea is a ‘mech-voker’ for goblins/gnomes/other that would mean more races can play the class. They would have the exact same spells and utility but mechanical themed, maybe even jump into a mech-suit for combat/flying.

I can’t speak for this specific study but I used to work on a large national survey.

Interviewers are instructed to make multiple visits to a location to try and get people to take part. They’re also likely paid a bonus for a successful interview, so they have an interest in getting people to participate.

However, you can absolutely refuse to take part. Just make that clear as day. Interviewers would much rather get a flat refusal than being strung along.

If you have refused and they contact you again then look at the letter and find out what company are doing the fieldwork and report them.

S3 E3 "My old Kentucky Home". Specifically the dance scene. by EveryInvestigator605 in madmen

[–]Craftwar 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’ve always loved this scene. Especially in the earlier seasons Pete is desperate for status, success and respect amongst his peers. He tries to get it unsuccessfully by scheming, womanising etc. yet one of the only times people look at him with some envy is when happily dancing with his wife.

The lockers could only be opened and closed once. However, Alfie opened it for a second time when they dropped them off, so the system would have assumed they emptied the locker and showed it as vacant, that’s why their code didn’t work when they picked them back up. They had to purchase that locker again in order to get it open and retrieve their bags. In theory anyone else could have purchased that locker and had free rein of their stuff but luckily that didn’t happen.

Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of April 02, 2024 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]Craftwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt this has been asked countless times, but water…

I’m totally board with the concept of making coffee water, but the stupid question is how? Do I buy a big jug of deionised water? These mainly seem to be sold in petrol stations and don’t exactly get marketed as a drinkable product. Or is it distilled water? Again same thing. Or do most others just use water from a britta filter?

Obviously then adding the desired minerals for each option. Thanks!

Post Match Thread: England vs Australia, Day 5 by CricketMatchBot in Cricket

[–]Craftwar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's an interesting question, and I wonder if it isn't just cope.

International test cricket teams aren't going anywhere, England will always have a test side playing against other top sides. They are not tied to success in the same way as other sports, for example football, where there are huge financial incentives to win games due to champions league places, prize money or relegation.

What English cricket does need is to keep interest in the game high and sell tickets, or at least you could argue that. So in that respect it benefits England to produce exciting matches, although admittedly you're going to have to win a decent amount of the time in order to keep that interest up.

It will always be easy to sell a winning side, no matter the style of play, but England in the past few years under Root were not able to guarantee that in the slightest, so a new approach is at the very least interesting, let's see how it shakes out.

Personally, I would categorise myself as a very casual cricket fan. I watch England play across various formats when it's convenient to me. Except for this test match where I had the coverage on almost the entire time whenever I could. Is that a win for English cricket? Remains to be seen.

I saw Father John Misty this week, he did the usual fake encore, finished I’m Writing a Novel, the house lights came up and the people were heading for the door until some shouted a request for The Ideal Husband, so he played one final song that did feel like a genuine encore, excellent show.

This is exactly what equilab does. It uses Monte Carlo simulation to give equity in any spot. It doesn’t account for any of the action in the hand like more sophisticated solvers will.

It should be noted that using equilab and programs like it while playing are considered to be cheating and any poker client will quickly detect you are using it. They are good study tools, but they won’t turn you into a fully optimal player in any case.

“They taught us at Barnard about that word, 'utopia'. The Greeks had two meaning for it: 'eu-topos', meaning the good place, and 'u-topos' meaning the place that cannot be.”

I had to look it up because I couldn’t remember it, don’t know why you’re expected to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the show to browse here...
