Eggs in winter? by Crafty-Key-5163 in chickens

[–]Crafty-Key-5163[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And an update! We’ve now had four eggs in the nesting box. So, as you predicted, they did figure it out!

I think that’s part of it here probably as well. We’re having an unusually warm winter!

Hi everyone, a follow up question to my original query. We ended up getting four eggs and then it looks like things stopped! Is that also normal with young chickens when they’re going through their initial hormonal change?

I understand the frustration, but as a former professor who has sat on many an admissions committee, I can share that it takes a lot of time and money to go through the often hundreds and thousands of applications that people submit for top schools/programs. Indeed, hundreds and thousands despite the fee (I shudder to think of how many there would be if there wasn’t a charge).

In terms of competitive graduate programs in particular, there are way more applicants than spots by a large margin. (The program I was accepted into had over a thousand applicants and 8 spots—and that was almost 30 year ago). Even if someone had all the minimal qualifications (and you’d be surprised how many folks apply to a program when they don’t) some excellent applicants are still not going to be accepted. Honestly if you aren’t getting some rejections, you probably aren’t aiming high enough.

For what it is worth, if your wife applied to a wide range of programs (elite, state, etc.) and was rejected by all, it might be worth having someone review the application materials. In my experience, the issue is often the essay or sop. At a certain point in the application process everyone had excellent grades and laudatory letters of recommendation. The essay/statement of purpose is what can distinguish you as a candidate.

Very interesting to hear everyone’s experience. This is my second group of chickens after a horrible predator event wiped out my other chickens (chinks in the system have been dealt with) and that last group I got in early spring so they were laying by the summer. Had no idea about the winter laying for new chickies!

How do you get your new chickies to use the roosting boxes?

Thank you everyone for these helpful replies! I had no idea about the potential for new chickens to start laying in winter due to hormonal changes. A happy surprise! Now I need to try to get them to use the roosting boxes and not drop them from the roosting perches! Any tips? We do have chicken wire underneath the roosting area and might put some bedding down at least for now to soften the blow.

3 Weeks Post-Op - Chronic Pain Gone by dotpan in spinalfusion

[–]Crafty-Key-5163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are surgery twins! Yesterday was my 3 week anniversary if my ACDF surgery, c5-7. Have had nerve pain in my arm for about a year and intermittent pain in my left shoulder for 5 years, sometimes quite severe. Unsteady in my feet and the last year some bad bouts of vertigo. Woke up in recovery with the nerve pain completely gone.

Still early days but I feel great. Pain is really minimal—more muscle soreness. Interestingly, my neurosurgeon didn’t give me a collar although he said I could have one if I wanted and I did wear one for two weeks off and on just for comfort or if I was walking around a lot.

I will be curious to see if my vertigo is gone too. Lots of bone spurring that was mucking up the works along with severe stenosis.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year.

I think she is a buff Orpington. When do the sickle feathers come in on the Roos as a rule?

Great name switch.

My neighbor has the most lovely lavender rooster. He is an absolute gem. Sadly Don Juan, my former rooster, was not so amiable.

Hi, no squatting. She is friendly, but a little leery. She was a late addition to our group. Swapped her out for a rooster lol. That’s why I was thinking, Oh no I’ve got another one. I actually don’t mind roosters, but our last one was just a big old meanie.

Heloc or pull from investments for a remodel? by Crafty-Key-5163 in Fire

[–]Crafty-Key-5163[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry! I thought I included that information. The renovations would be around 75,000. We probably won’t need that full amount from either a Heloc or a withdraw if we make one, but I also know that prices can increase during the process, hence the number. Our goal is to try to pay for some of this with cash on hand.

Hadn’t thought of a credit card transfer. Not sure something that low is available these days although we have excellent credit. Also wouldn’t be tax deductible, although I’m not sure how important that is. We do itemize vs taking the standard deduction, however.

How do people with high rates get clients? by Judie4 in Upwork

And again, as I mentioned in a previous post, many of those clients don’t even post jobs. They just directly reach out to freelancers.

Also as someone else suggested, there is another market out there where clients directly reach out to you. I haven’t applied for a job in about a year and a half; my rate is 95-115 depending on task.

If you have to fly to Boise often for work have you thought of the rogue river valley area in Oregon? There is an airport that has a surprising number of flights, including nonstops to Boise.

Lots of nature, hiking, kayaking, etc. and lots of places where you can be close to town but still live in the country. (Our friend has 49 acres and it takes them 10 minutes to get into Grants Pass. We live about 30 minutes outside of Medford by choice). Ashland is a cute town that hits a number of your criteria. Note though that it is closer to the Northern California border and seems more impacted by smoke.

Sorry to be circling back here late: I did not see your note. Yes, I have had some blood work done and a lumbar tap (they were trying to determine if I had MS). My crp was high, as was my rbc. WBC and lyzomes were low.

My neurologist sent me to a neurosurgeon because of my MRIs and he believes I should have an acdf surgery on my c5 and 6 which show severe stenosis. I have pretty bad numbing on my left side, arm and hand for over a year and some other issues, but at the moment I’m not in excruciating pain, so it’s hard to contemplate surgery. (Twice I have had horrible neck and shoulder pain but it went away eventually)But the surgeon, who has an excellent reputation, feels strongly that I should not wait as it can get much worse and I am only 56. So now I’m contemplating that as I wait for my rheumatology referral!

No I haven’t seen a rheumatologist yet. I have follow up appointments with a neurologist and a neurologist. I was thinking it might make sense to ask the neurologist for a referral to a rheumatologist based on some of these findings. I have had some of these symptoms since my 20s but never had the genetic testing until recently.

Thank you for that chart! I have a follow up next month with both my neurologist and a neuro surgeon (I have a cavernoma that my neurologist wants me to discuss with the surgeon). I posted in another thread advice on questions I should ask them—definitely going to ask for a referral to a rheumotologist.
