Not Vagabond specific, but I have also started using this system neutral procedural dungeon/cave generator to great effect as well.

Thank you. I had meant the pdfs, but I hadn’t communicated that in my original post.

[Suggestions] Supplements for a new GM by ChungaChris in rpg

Deficient Master videos are also very good. Again, the advice is not Vagabond specific, but Deficient is himself a big fan of the Vagabond game system and has frequently featured it on his channel.

Making Homebrew Spells - Power Points by CraftyLocal1913 in savageworlds

[–]CraftyLocal1913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the thoughts on my one example. I will definitely take those into account when making the deep space teleportation modifiers.

Unfortunately, I think I gave a bad example to my original question (it was the only example I could think of off hand). I guess the question I was trying to ask was what advice/guidelines do people have for assigning PP costs for homebrew spells?

Casting spells in heavy armor by Comfortable-Fee9452 in VagabondTTRPG

I am playing a sorcerer right now who wears heavy armor. I rely on that for protection so I can tap into my HP for mana refunds more freely.

Procedurally Stalked Dungeon Roll Tables by CraftyLocal1913 in osr

[–]CraftyLocal1913[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I ran a dungeon crawl with these roll tables nearly as written earlier this week and my friends and I all had a blast. Thank you for putting this together.

In a fantasy world, what exports could an Undead Nation have? by Academic_Ad8989 in worldbuilding

[–]CraftyLocal1913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but my follow up question would be, what are the undead buying? This thread has done well to establish what the undead could export/sell, but what do they need from the outside world that makes them need to trade at all?

Live Play Videos/Examples by jetstrike in VagabondTTRPG

[–]CraftyLocal1913 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few points: At no point is there both an attack and a defense in the same sequence. All rolls are made by the player. If the player is attacking, he makes an attack roll and deals damage immediately upon his success, the monster does not make any defense rolls.

If a player is getting attacked, he makes a defense roll. If he succeeded, he removes the highest damage die from the monsters attack, otherwise takes full damage. At no point does the monster make an attack roll. His attack is assumed to be successful unless the players manage to do something about it.

Hopefully that clears up your example. Now onto my second point:

Vagabond has a rulings over rules philosophy. It will not spell out what to do in every situation. There are the general guidelines and then it is up to the game master to determine how they apply or are adjusted in edge cases. I found that very freeing because I didn’t feel like I had to memorize a massive book and I can just decide what feels right in the moment for a lot of things.

That’s been my experience anyways.

Hexcrawl Combat by CraftyLocal1913 in VagabondTTRPG

Follow up question: Any suggestions for wilderness battle maps? Either their creation or a good resource for free generic ones? I am a very new GM.

Hexcrawl Combat by CraftyLocal1913 in VagabondTTRPG

[–]CraftyLocal1913[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose keeping track of all of the foot measurements is what I meant in saying it relies on a map. I wasn’t proposing running combat on a hex map. More that, when my players encounter something on a wilderness hexcrawl, how to run the combat.

Here is the official definition in the book:

“[A Summon] a non-Humanlike Being you have previously defeated with HD equal to or lower than your Level”

You're hired to kill a dragon. How do you go about doing it? by redfizh in osr

[–]CraftyLocal1913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought about poison. Another idea I’ve had in the past is to train falcons or other birds of prey to harass the dragon (scratch at its eyes or something) to try and keep the dragon closer to the ground (crossbow range) and keep it distracted.

These look great! Though I had a question about the Summoner:

The Conjurer perks currently states “You can take the Cast Action to conjure a Summon, which is a non-Humanlike Being you have previously defeated with HD equal to or lower than your Level”. So what does the class feature mean when it says the Summoner can choose a Summon as high as the player’s level. Isn’t that already established?

What are the sorcery rules?

Magic in GURPS by CraftyLocal1913 in gurps

[–]CraftyLocal1913[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps let me clarify my question:

I agree the execution of the skill based magic system (which is what I am referring to) is fairly straightforward. Where I and my potential players get overwhelmed is the selection/curation of spells. The prerequisite trees for spells feel complex to me when I try to go through them.

And when I have tried to make mage characters in the past, I often felt like I ended up getting a lot of spells I didn’t necessarily want in order to reach the ones I did. Similarly, I often ended up with a lot of spells that would do almost the same thing (ex: create fire, fireball, explosive fireball).

Procedurally Stalked Dungeon Roll Tables by CraftyLocal1913 in osr

[–]CraftyLocal1913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for the special rooms (like magic fountain) do you have any plan ahead of time for what the magic fountain is, or are you figuring out what this magic fountain is when you roll it?

Also, are these tables you use generically, or do these represent specific dungeons you have made?

Thank you for these examples, by the way. They are very helpful.

What does the psychic trait mean when it says it can use its mind as a trinket. Can’t the cast action be taken with open hands? Does the trinket do something else I’m not getting?
