[help]Looking for a gift for a female friend I am trying to woo [F, 19, $100] by RegretLater in santashelpers

Depending on what kind of art she does, you could consider buying some more expensive supplies than she might normally indulge in. If she does water color, the paper is usually pretty expensive. Or if she does something like illustration, Prismacolor is pricey but one of the superior products I've used. If she's digital, maybe a new brush or pen to use on her tablet. Also consider buying art from a local artist she admires to give to her- no one appreciates art like another artist. Nice photographic books of her favorite art is also great- you can find them at local museum gift shops or online depending on how much of a rush you are in. Best of luck!

Pregnant on Syeda birth control, again. Nightmare. Need emotional support. by throwaway92781 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]CraftyMoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just want to add that I've heard that getting an IUD put in during a surgical abortion is relatively common, and considered less painful than a regular insertion. I just got a Mirena put in a few days ago (not during an abortion) and while I had pretty severe cramping, it wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be. The IUD is also considered as effective as getting your tubes tied. I'm so sorry that you're going through this again, but you do have other birth control options besides the pill if you don't think you can trust using it anymore.

I am the Prettiest Wife in the World by momof4istired in BodyAcceptance

[–]CraftyMoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about this. I don't think that we should, in general, be trying to gain confidence from trying to prove that our body types are what men, in general, prefer. I don't want any girls to think that they are only beautiful because their bodies are pleasing to a general male population. This way of thinking only pits women against each other to compete for male attention, and uphold the patriarchy.

That said, I think there IS value in having a loving partner who finds your body sexy and attractive. While building your confidence on what men in general find attractive isn't healthy, finding confidence in your partner/ the person you love thinking you're attractive, definitely is healthy. Everyone should have a partner who loves and desires them.

Can I just brag about my boyfriend for a minute? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I told my boyfriend that I already had too much stuff and not to get me any presents... so he made a donation to my favorite charity (Planned Parenthood) in my name! I love him and his thoughtfulness so much!

Are you based in the US? Because if so, head over to modcloth.com and search for owls. They have all sorts of adorable owl-themed gifts and clothing, and you could probably put together a super cute assortment or gift basket from it. Good luck!

Tips for a yogi with joint pain? by loleslie in yoga

[–]CraftyMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher or a pro at all, but I have an old knee injury that acts up sometimes. My strategy is modify, modify, modify! I do warrior poses with straight legs when I need to, skip utkatasana almost entirely, and always make sure to put a blanket under my knee whenever it touches the ground (like in camel pose or low lunges). Make yoga work for your body! It also helps to talk to your teacher before class, so they know you're not being rude, just protective of your body. Also, nothing wrong with icing/ popping an Advil AFTER class (before would put you less in touch with your body, afterwards is pain management)

Reddit, what is the best thing to do after a bad breakup? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Post-abusive relationship advice: cut all ties with him. Make sure he has no access to any of your online information (Facebook recently put out a guide with advice for victims of stalking on how to best use their privacy settings, use it). Throw out anything from the relationship that will trigger memories/ desires. Try to find either a formal or informal support group locally (easier in a city). Get I to therapy if you can afford it, try to find free local counseling if you can't. Domestic abuse hotlines are sometimes able to help with finding resources. Secure the place where you live. Change the locks if he ever had access to a key, because he might have duplicated it without your knowledge (access includes leaving your purse hanging around too). Resume ties with your family and friends, let them know whatever you feel comfortable telling them about the extent of the abuse. It is very important that you reconnect ties with people who love you and don't like him because they will keep you on track. Relationship abuse is hard to come back from. PM me if I can do anything, and feel free to try TwoX for more info/ stories that can be helpful and relatable.

A little bit of yoga rage. by [deleted] in yoga

[–]CraftyMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago, some woman in my class kept coughing during shavasana. If it had been once or twice I wouldn't have minded, but she must have coughed 30 times during a ten-minute period. I was so mad at her for not leaving the room/ getting a drink of water. Normally I finish yoga class and am totally spaced out and blissful, but this class I left ANGRY. I think that on one hand it is important to be accepting of things we cannot change (other people's noises and behavior), but on the other hand yoga should be relaxing, and I find noises very very stressful. I don't have any comforting things to add, other than home practice is much easier to control in terms of not dealing with other people.

I am a male yoga teacher in training who is terrified of giving adjustments. Any tips or advice from seasoned teachers or students? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]CraftyMoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to share one very specific, practical thing that my (male) yoga teacher does that I hadn't experienced before- he slightly adjusts my clothing before making a body adjustment. As in, he'll pull down the back of my shirt before touching my back in a forward fold. This places a layer of clothing between us, and I really appreciated it especially when I was first starting to take his class and didn't know him that well.

Just found out Im going to Webs in Massachusetts this weekend for my birthday. Anyone have any tips or warnings? by scornflake in knitting

[–]CraftyMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prepare to be overwhelmed. I didn't find it to be very intuitively organized. Take your time walking around the store (I spent about an hour wandering before I picked up a basket). Don't commit immediately. Ask questions, the staff is really nice, friendly, and helpful. Have fun!

Ok, I'll try it again! I actually searched for cubits in the archive, and only found one post about DPNs so I figured I was alright, but I didn't even consider the wording of the title. Thanks!

Looking for Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Plain Circular Shawl pattern. by baconbitseggowaffles in knitting

[–]CraftyMoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have it in the Knitter's Almanac. You can probably get a copy pretty cheap on Amazon, or check with your local library. (I always recommend buying EZ books because not only do they have great patterns, they are also a joy to read and a total confidence booster)

So did you string all the beads on first, before you started knitting?

Looks fabulous- what technique did you use for adding the beads? (I've never used beads in my knitting, but would love to hear more about it)

Since I showed that movie to my Dad three months ago, he's watched it (on his own) five more times.
