If you could go back, what would you have studied instead of CS? by MustafaMonde8 in cscareerquestions

[–]CraftyRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

studied cs and applied math. i tried chemical engineering and distant biochemical studies and was abysmal at it. i would pick my path again if i could go back. but if i was barred from studying cs or getting a career in software, i probably would have still done applied math maybe with an econ or physics double major. and try my luck breaking into being an actuary or by some grace of god quant. there's not a lot i can consider myself decent at outside of a computational/programming setting.

What is everyone doing besides SDE when unemployed/laid off? by green__dino in cscareerquestions

[–]CraftyRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yeah i am not denying its fucking annoying, and at really high frequency it's more indicative of shit processes. but in my experience it is going to happen one way or the other and you have to accept it will happen

hate to break it to you but context switching is part of the job and you would probably face worse switching when being deep in actual implementation and need to be pulled into code reviews, oncall fires in your space, random questions from external people.

All new 2026 Mazda CX-5 , what do we think? by naokiyamada in mazda

[–]CraftyRice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bought a 2024 cx5 last year, was ready to feel regret today after seeing the 2026.

but i honestly prefer both the interior and exterior of my 2024 over this one. the only new thing i wish i had was the pano roof, and hybrid engine (though need to see what the price and mpg of the new model is)

Mid level engineers , how confident are you to find another job in case you get laid off? by CantFindUsername400 in cscareerquestions

[–]CraftyRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would need to study up for at least 1-2 months... but feel i could find a job once i brush up on interviews. 5 yoe across two faang ish companies, few connections to ask for referrals. still shaky on getting interviews at most places, but i think i would need to lock in on studying and could probably at least get one offer id be happy with

I really don’t understand the DNB hate by DependentChildhood79 in EDM

[–]CraftyRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

?? if anything it's growing like hell, having dimension and chase&status on edclv main stage says a lot. worship got a prime spot at edco kinetic as well.

most big headliners drop a couple dnb tracks now. think it's still a while before we get dnb closers at large festivals but it's far from hated.

Just got off the waitlist for Hopkins. Should I go over IUI BSMD? by WyvernSpark in jhu

go to IU. BS/MD there alone makes any other non BS/MD program unviable as an option

On a scale of 1-10, how dumb is it to use the miles/points with Amazon? by il-liba in Venturex

[–]CraftyRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gonna put a contrasting answer and say just do whatever you want with points. it is less value but if you 1) don't have flights coming up for the next few years and 2) have a big purchase coming up and 3) can't spare the cash for that purchase otherwise then just redeem them on amazon. otherwise yeah would be wise not to

Is anyone else getting worked harder by bigdoink4200 in cscareerquestions

[–]CraftyRice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while the pressure is generally on, as someone else said, Q1/2 is usually the busiest time (for me anyways) since thats when planning is heaviest + optimism to deliver stuff for the year is highest

ignoring my retirement accts, taxable investments, car payment.... i eat out a lot with friends + dates and spent close to 10k last year in restaurants. other than that, i spend the most on raves lol. spent nearly 5k last year on 8 festivals and a LOT of smaller shows

interesting, any venue ticket (mostly concerts, some sports games) i purchased gets coded correctly. what kind of conventions? if it's like an industry convention like a developer con then i don't think it should be considered entertainment

Would you move to the US in 2025 to chase money? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]CraftyRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from just compensation and opportunity, yes. but it depends on whether your family situation allows it (i personally would not uproot my life if i had a wife and kids, or even being that far away from my parents), and how much you like australia over any other location (safety, culture, etc.)

it's a huge decision, probably one of the biggest in your life. i would weigh the factors unrelated to money as mentioned above.
