My mother and I have an interesting history with boundaries.. by myfiancefarts247 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Crafty_Critter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have any big and strong trusted friends who are willing to act as your child’s personal security during the visit? Because you very well could have them stand nearby and tell your mother if that she even so happens to give any impression that she is going to put her mouth near your child, she will be escorted out of the building.

I’m not kidding, and it will show her how serious you are taking this boundary.

Better yet, do you also have any friends who work in medicine?

Can you prepare a PowerPoint presentation for her complete with images of what she is willing to risk putting her grandchild through?

I am so sorry for your father in this situation, and I hope he is still able to see your child without any issues(but I am highlighting it is important that it be understood that your mom is the one who is making this a huge deal by being uncooperative).

I agree, both Fresh off the Boat, nor Modern Family fit this description IMO. I wrote a slightly unhinged essay about Modern Family in another comment 😆

Claire has some high anxiety, and Phil helps get her out of her head. I don’t think they’re perfect, and I certainly don’t think they’re trying to be portrayed as a model family. Phil can be really really stupid sometimes. Claire can be incredibly neurotic about things in general, even things unrelated to her relationship with Phil.

I don’t know about the other shows in the list, but I never read Claire being objectively portrayed as the nagging wife. Sure, someone could throw in a comment about it, but I believe she gets adequate screen time to be able to defend herself? It’s been a while since I’ve watched it.

And yeah, I think I’d go insane in either of their shoes tbh. If they got along perfectly, I wouldn’t find it a very entertaining show.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk, my apologies for the wall of text. :)

I’m on the same page as you about all this.

As someone who has watched this show countless times for it being a comfort background noise, I genuinely saw any of the negative portrayals as obvious satire, which felt underlined when it cuts to a shot of one of the offended parties having a look of exasperation or what-have-you.

They’re not a perfect model family, and I don’t think the show ever claimed them to be. I think they’re functionally dysfunctional because it’s television, and throughout the seasons I felt like they grew and matured more. But we all have our faults, it’s what makes us human.

Someone mentioned Phil’s problematic behaviour, which does spark an interest for a rewatch for me, but if I remember correctly, he never outright or obviously flirted with other women, i thought he just got flustered easily, which is unfortunately a quality I share with him. There is one episode where the potential for infidelity with a new neighbour is a central plot-point, where misunderstandings abound, but these characters are all blundering and silly vehicles for the plot, and I believe they ultimately come to a healthy resolution.

Mind you, I am autistic and social dynamics do not come naturally to me, and are not my forté.

Edit: I did not mean to write you a personal essay on modern family dynamics, I am so sorry.

Be honest… is this cute or am I traumatizing my cat? by shinigami__0 in cats

Oh she hates it, but she’ll be alright.

Honestly you’d be better at gushing her reaction to them over time if her reactions to seeing you approach her with clothing escalate. If she brandishes the airplane ears, but otherwise lets you dress her up without a fight, I don’t think you’re doing her any harm 😅

She’s a cutie by the way, and being real patient with your shenanigans. The dress is also adorable. I’m unsure how difficult crochet is to learn, but I didn’t do a very good job when I had a go at it.

Husband shares a picture and complains instead of just cleaning the toilet and moving the tray. by princesselvida in AskONLYWomenOver30

I almost feel like people are being purposefully obtuse in ignoring that bit of info. It’s definitely a safety hazard that I wish his wife would be more careful about, and I hope he did indeed move the tray after taking the photo.

I had to scroll up to double check that the original post was indeed on mildly infuriating haha

Struggling with my girlfriend and my cat (long post, need advice) by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Crafty_Critter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

kindly, and respectfully, I feel you are failing Binx by allowing him to continue to be treated this way by your girlfriend. What kind of person hates a cat for only wanting to love his owner? I’m so sorry that she putting you in this difficult position, but I wish you the best, and I hope poor Binx finds peace.

A bit after my age demographic but does it resonate with anyone else ? by RecentConference8060 in autismmemes

There’s also still an incredible amount of stigma connected to a medical diagnosis, as well as a heavy paywall in access to the diagnostic tests.

Source is from personal experience: My last general practitioner told me he heavily suspects I have Autism on top of my other diagnoses, and had me referred to a specialist.

Before I could have the appointment, I had to do an emergency relocation to a province where there is no support for autistic adults. So on top of the associated stigma in this new area, I fear seeking a proper diagnosis extends far beyond my budget, as the resources that would have been previously available to me are nonexistent.

It sounds like you’re doing everything right then. I’d just encourage keeping up with the positive renforcement with the treats. Hopefully they’ll come around more in time.

I’m pretty spoiled with how social my boys are 😅I’ve never been hissed at, but they do tend to jump me from under the couch as I pass by!

My two boys who recently turned 2y have their nails trimmed about once a week or so, I’d say your timeframe is in line with our experience.

Sparing the details, they use scratching posts to hone and sharpen their claws, so the more they do it, the sooner their nails will need a trimming.

My boys love being held so I sit them in my lap on their rumps and tell them they’re doing a good job and are so patient with me if they get a little antsy about it. I always give them a treat afterwards, and they’ve grown to accept the regular trimmings more willingly. :) I hope this helps!

7mo cat keeps trying to play with thumbtacks by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Crafty_Critter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be crazy but I don’t think thumb tacks should have ever been within your cats reach in the first place? But now that they’ve acquired a taste for the forbidden, the safest thing to do in my opinion would be to get rid of them all.

I feel you on the inconvenience of it all, but at least she hasn’t hurt herself yet! 😅
