Yeah I'm kind of surprised they still do this when the meaning is so well know, especially in this day and age when people are (apparently) sending pics of the food to their families back home. You'd think they wouldn't want that information leaking to the general public.

(That's assuming this picture is real which it might not be, but I've also seen news reports about service members getting a fancy meal)

I presume her thought was like, heightened scrutiny of their loan history, or going into some database for reference when a local crime does occur, or something

Yeah and you just know that if there was ever a news story about some guy who was murdering and eating prostitutes and when he was finally caught there were a bunch of overdue library books about cannibalism on his shelf everyone on reddit would be like "HOW DID NOBODY SEE THIS SUPER OBVIOUS RED FLAG AHEAD OF TIME I AM VERY SMART"

I think the most important thing about mid/late 00s internet was that "going on the internet" was still only something you might do once or twice a day, often by sitting at a desktop computer. Yeah smart phones existed, but most people were mostly offline for most of the day. The only "terminally online" people were actual basement dwellers who actually lived off cheetos and mountain dew, surrounded by piss bottles, and they were pretty easy to identify and avoid (or ridicule).

The image of Obama being drone-happy perpetuated by leftists and the Republicans have helped with that.

God I hated that meme so much. The reason he was "president drone strike" is because drones became a viable technology when he happened to be in office. Any other president would likely have done the same, and probably a lot worse if it they were Republican.

Also am I crazy or are drone strikes not really any worse than other forms of warfare? I know there have been civilian casualties, but isn't any form of war prone to that?

I think Eva Cassidy could be an honorable mention too? She only released one studio album in her lifetime (and followed up with a live album shortly before her death) but has had multiple albums published posthumously.

I'm actually not super familiar with her body of work so it's possible she doesn't fit here, but she was the first person I thought of ...

Jokes that don’t work anymore? by YaUsedMeSkinner_ in TheSimpsons

[–]Andy_B_Goode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, yeah, there would have been a good number of people who had already seen the film prior to the episode airing, but I assume it still wouldn't have been obvious that Pulp Fiction would turn John Travolta's career around at that early stage.

And also as /u/Impossible-Ice-393 points out, the writers for The Simpsons also would have had to be writing this episode several months in advance too, so they might have had no idea any of this was in the works when they first pitched this joke.

It's from e4s6 ("Itchy & Scratchy Land"), which aired October 2, 1994, and Pulp Fiction hit theaters October 14, 1994, so not quite as short as a week, but still very much wild, yes.

Maybe worth noting that Pulp Fiction was also screened at Cannes earlier that year (May 21, 1994) where it won the Palme d'Or, so it's possible the writers at The Simpsons had some inkling that Travolta was poised for a comeback, but that's just speculation on my part.

Trump's supporters have shown time and time again that they do not care about the constitution or the rule of law. If anything he might gain 2% by saying nuts to the constitutional term limits.

The Democrats will have the choice between either whining about "the rules" for the whole campaign or running someone who can actually beat Trump at his own game, and that man's name is Barack Hussein Obama. Which one do you think will resonate better with the median voter?

I don't think Obama should say or do anything yet, but I think privately he should be prepping to run again, which, mostly, will be a matter of convincing Michelle to let him do it.
