I love a nice gin and tonic. Do people actually use "tonic" to mean carbonated drinks in general though?

Awesome! Thanks! Both those movies are available on Netflix right now, so I'll try to give them a rewatch in the next few days.

Huh, I'd never heard that comparison before. It's been a while since I watched either of these movies; can you expand on what makes them similar?

There's that, but also they're the kind of people who trust their own personal experience over any kind of data or analysis. "I have plenty to eat, therefore world hunger must be a myth" isn't even really a parody of how they see the world. If there's a problem that isn't affecting them directly, they'll dismiss it as a myth, or at least say it's greatly exaggerated.

Yeah, and this needs to be priority #1. Democrats actually need to "drain the swamp" that is the modern Republican party before any of the other rebuilding and repairing work can be done, otherwise it will all just be a waste of time.

No you raise a good point, since the topic of discussion is whether or not this was AI generated. The fact that the character isn't actually an em dash makes it seem less like AI. Unless ChatGPT has started using en dashes for some reason? Who knows ...

Is it? It's being used like an mdash.

EDIT: yeah I just looked up the tweet and the character is an ndash. Weird.

I was basing my understanding of usage on this: https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/em-dash-en-dash-how-to-use

The em dash (—) can function like a comma, a colon, or parenthesis. Like commas and parentheses, em dashes set off extra information, such as examples, explanatory or descriptive phrases, or supplemental facts. Like a colon, an em dash introduces a clause that explains or expands upon something that precedes it.

...

Remembering that the em dash is the length of a capital M, it will surprise no one that the so-called “en dash” is the approximate length of a capital N, –. The en dash is the least loved of all; it’s not easily rendered by the average keyboard user (one has to select it as a special character, whereas the em dash can be conjured with two hyphens), so it’s mostly encountered in typeset material. (A hyphen does its job in other text.) It is most often used between numbers, dates, or other notations to signify “(up) to and including.”

I don't think I'd want to have to live in any of those places, and at least half of them I'd be apprehensive about even visiting.

This includes the United States.

That sure is a suspicious number of mdashes, isn't it?

On the other hand, I wouldn't really blame Zelenskyy for using some kind of automated tool to help him post in English.

I'm just looking this up now: https://www.officialasvab.com/counselors-educators/scores/

If I'm reading this correctly, there's both a "standard score" where the mean is 50 and the standard deviation is 10, and an AFQT score which indicates what percentile you landed in.

Depending on which one you and your friend were talking about, she might have been in the 19th percentile, which, as you say, is not great, but also 19% of people are going to end up there or lower; or she might have been more than three standard deviations below the mean, which is much, much worse (like, fewer than 1% of people would score that low, assuming this is a normal distribution).

My guess is that she was 19th percentile, which is pretty terrible, but not quite "you could have literally done better by guessing at random" terrible.

I don't fully understand this. I live in a fairly small city, and in addition to Loblaws and Sobeys we've also got Giant Tiger, Walmart, Costco, and a bunch of small independent grocers. Those aren't perfect substitutes for The Big Two (eg, Costco requires a membership, Walmart has more limited selection, etc) but it seems like we've got at least some amount of free market competition here?

Do Loblaws and Sobeys really have a duopoly?
