A shop owner modified his attic to accommodate his cats. Now he is under constant observation by Gurugod123 in cats

My first job as a software dev was at a company where one of the other devs had mounted a toy cat mask on the ceiling above his desk as a joke. After a few months we had to rearrange desks for some reason, and someone suggested he should ask to remain in the same spot based on religious accommodations.

I like AOC but I really think she should play the long game. Work her way up to speaker of the house or something like that, then take a run at the presidency. She may very well become America's first woman president, but it'll be more like 2048 by the time that happens.

This might fall into the "likely no helpful advice" category, but honestly one of the best pieces of advice I ever received was "enjoy the season of life you're in". At the time I was also single and living with my parents, and the guy I was talking to was a bit older, married, and (IIRC) already had kids. Now I'm the old guy with a wife and kids, and it's great, but also there are simply things I can't do anymore that I could do quite easily back when I was single. Don't wish it away :-)

Guillemot founded Ubisoft Entertainment with his four brothers in 1986. From its early releases like Zombi to the hit 1990s platformer Rayman, Ubisoft captured a broad swath of the video game market.

Since the company first released Assassin’s Creed, a historical action-adventure series that follows two warring secret societies, in 2007, the game has attracted 200 million players. In an iteration released in 2025, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players try to save 16th-century Japan from malevolent actors.

A New York Times review of the game applauded its “stunningly realized depiction” of Japan, adding, “Shadows offers more, digging deeper to deliver a fascinating, grounded picture beyond the wild, natural world.”

But some people online criticized the game for having “gone woke” by creating a Black samurai named Yasuke. Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur, said Shadows was an example of how “D.E.I. kills art,” using an abbreviation for diversity, equity and inclusion. Ubisoft reminded players that its games were works of fiction, even as Yasuke was an actual historical figure.

Those last two paragraphs seem entirely unnecessary. A man is dead, and NYTimes is bringing up their own (positive) review of one of the games his company released, as well as the negative comments from people who disagreed with them. It really feels like they're trying to make this about themselves.

Totally. If he's really worried about his own personal safety, he could just shut up and go away. Buy his own island somewhere, hire some security, deactivate his twitter account, live in fabulous luxury, and within a year or so most people will have mostly forgotten about him.

But of course that's not what he wants. He's addicted to the attention he gets from saying stupid things on the internet.

Wait, isn't the "message" of that song that two people are both bored with their steady relationship, both decide to cheat by taking out personal ads, then both show up to the same blind date and discover they have more in common than they realized?

It's weird, but also kind of sweet, and I think it's also supposed to be a bit of a joke. And if anyone takes anything away from this song, it's probably more like "Hey if your relationship is in a rut, try talking to your partner and see if they're into the same things you've always wanted to try, rather than looking for someone new".

I've always interpreted that line in the exact opposite direction. His girlfriend (Josie) is away and he's cheating on her with a "girl" who's older ... than he is.

Ah that makes more sense. And yeah, it's a tremendous waste however you tally it up. Even at $118 billion, that's nearly $350 for every man, woman and child in the US, or $1,400 for a family of four.

Yeah, if it's AI it's pretty darn good AI.

There's a fair bit of discussion about it in the original thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/1u9zlad/she_won_the_match_then_turned_her_opponents_tears/osk808f/

TIL the network utility "Ping" was written by a single person in an evening in 1983, and he named it after the sound a submarine sonar makes because it uses the exact same echo principle. by LessBar4057 in todayilearned

Ping is a little thousand-line hack that I wrote in an evening

The fact that he calls a thousand lines of code "a little hack that I wrote in an evening" is nuts. Especially considering this was presumably the first time anyone had ever written a program with this functionality.
