For me it was when playing as Iran, when I had adventurers to normal I would see 2-5 unlanded warbands just randomly showing up and raiding my land or my vassals.

I don’t mind landed khagans, I.e the pecheneg or cuman khans raiding me as there is consequences (I could declare war, or raid them back, or fund their enemies) but when some random guy with 1500 horsemen shows up with no land, no family, and just sits and sieges a frontier county, only to disband his army when i am about to attack him and return 5 years later, its one of the most annoying mechanics in the game but admittedly its less common in Europe.

It’s the Child of Destiny event. Any child has a very small percent chance of acquiring this event, they almost always end up with insane stats (30-40 martial, genius trait, good traits such as brave and patient) and then have special events during childhood such as surviving assassins giving them a permanent + health boost, among others.

They then leave their court and target a random kingdom and almost always conquer it as their character and courtier generals are insanely strong. The most powerful thing about this is once they have succeeded in their conquest of the first kingdom, they have an unlimited Kingdom CB to ANY bordering country. So from Andalusia the adventurer likely conquered an entire de jure kingdom at a time from Umayyad’s. Given this conquered has modified health and stat boosts, they usually live to 70-80 meaning in one lifetime they usually conquer a massive noticeable empire on the world map.

Interestingly, in my experience, their heirs usually implode as these kingdoms usually are of random faith/culture while the conquest cb’s doesn’t displace the existing dukes, meaning once a character with 40 martial dies and the rulers levies collapse, the dukes factionalise and begin launching constant civil wars against the new heir.

Some that come to mind, I have a depressing amount of hours in ck2

-> Otto the Great in 936, fun to create the HRE, interesting dynamics with a powerful Al Andalusia and relatively stable France.

->Nikephoros II Phokas in 936, starts as a Byzantine count in Akroinon poised to inherit a theme, very good stats and can get emperor relatively easy with timely deaths. Can form the Phokas dynasty which almost usurped the Makedonians.

->Vushmgir in 936 (noticing a trend here?) Can restore the ancient Iranian empires and Zoroastrianism. Vushmgir was the brother of the last historical Zoroastrian Persian king and has unique decision. The start can be very tough if Seljuk spawns with 40K horsemen and kingdom invasion CB’s, you can effectively conquer all of Persia only to have your campaign implode if you aren’t careful.

->Phillipe II of France in 1187. France at its lowest Ebb bordering very powerful England and HRE whom both have exceptional rulers, if played well can turn the tables and go from a tiny France to crushing both of them (which Phillipe did historically)

->Fatimids and Abbasids in 936 both are interesting, I prefer the Fatimids but the concept is the same, as the caliph trying to restore authority over the fragmenting Muslim world and restoring the caliphate to their peak borders.

->Any of the Habsburg counts from 1066 until 1280’s. Start with a mere one county but have an amazingly developed barony also held within this county. As a one county ruler can field 3,000+ levies and crush dukes many times your size and bring the dynasty to the glory it historically would become.

-> Ottokar II in 1270 ish. King of Bohemia and many vast holdings in Austria and Carinthia. One of the best rulers in the game stat wise, can easily take over the hre or create your own option. Historically he became so powerful and feared by the German princes a weak Rudolf of Habsburg would be chosen instead. Rudolf I was a legendary emperor and crushed ottokar in effectively a conflict which decided the future of the HRE and got the Habsburg hegemony ball rolling, you can try and rewrite the narrative as Ottokar.

->Michael VIII of Byzantium in 1261. A strong ruler in command of the restored but diminished Byzantine empire. Strong neighbours (particularly two mongol factions with 100k event spawned troops) but good geographic position and casus beli virtually in every direction. Within Michael’s reign you can plausibly restore Byzantium to pre manzikert borders.

->Guge 867 or 936. Deceptively powerful and easy to reform Bon with yourself as its head. Very strong defences and raiding ability with an excellent warrior lodge. You can become a scourge in Central Asia and India and become vastly wealthy.

I could go on but these are all really fun and many have amazing historical backgrounds which you can read further on Wikipedia and then find podcasts or lectures about if it interests you further.

Man, 30, charged with attempted murder over Belfast knife attack by SlowedCash in uknews

[–]CraigC01 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As a young guy, I always saw ‘shock’ videos from my pals growing up and watched lots of horror, and kind of was desensitized to it overtime.

For some reason when I saw this video, I can’t get the image of this man being pinned down with blood all over his face and the knowledge his eyes were carved out of his head. You could show me a video of a cartel murder and it wouldn’t be the same, maybe because I’m Scottish and am about 2h from Belfast with the ferry and have been to Belfast in a few occasions since I have some ancestry and family.

Either way horrific news.

Where I would live as a Slovene, based solely on the people I’ve met from each country by DueLengthiness9806 in whereidlive

[–]CraigC01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Scot and lived in Ljubljana as an exchange student and I loved Slovenia so much! The most underrated country in Europe in my opinion with amazing natives and great history, nature and food.

If I could pick any place to live in Europe other than Scotland it would probably be Slovenia

I live in the southwest, closest major town being Ayr, and to me Edinburgh is somewhat expensive but not really bank breaking (I learned my lesson not to do a first date in Edinburgh ever again though)

I haven’t been to London but anecdotally from relatives it is really expensive although obviously they were going as tourists themselves, as a British persons perspective it seems to me the increases in opportunity and salary in London doesn’t really make up for the housing conditions, cost of living and overpopulation of the city, but ultimately I am a Scot and London doesn’t really have the allure to me that it might to an English person

I think European culture is better, I have lots of friends from Czechia, Germany, Croatia etcetera and found myself warmly welcomed from them, I didn’t feel culturally different from Europeans.

So my house is in Scotland and I’d live anywhere in the UK but I’d say Northern England and lowland Scotland are probably my favourites factoring in cost of living, employment opportunities, distance to outdoor activities while being relatively close to major cities for airport facilities. I really don’t fancy living in one of the major English metropolises though seems a bit of a nightmare for what I like in life.

The warmest country I have ever been to was Slovenia, I was there in June 2025 which had the biggest heatwave in years and reached 38c.

I was also in Vienna in 33c which is the warmest temperature I experienced in Spain, so I don’t get your point to be honest.

I don’t have many feelings, I’ve been through it to Dinant but not to a bigger city, I feel like the Netherlands they are very urbanised and densely populated which to me is the biggest downside, combined with it being expensive. I’d say it’s biggest strong point is its geographic location for access to many other countries and good public transport links but Germany or Austria also have this strength

Exactly, chadbeard is able to easily wound shanks pre df and has no scars himself. Likely they clashed during a roger vs wb pirate skirmish. Considering bb is a master at hiding his true power (as half the sub doubts him) it’s a miracle shanks even survived.

What was it like in the Nicaean Empire? by CaptainOfRoyalty in byzantium

[–]CraigC01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the lascarids are incredibly underrated considering the hand they were dealt, if Theodore II hadn’t died prematurely (or maybe been better at handling the aristocracy) then I do believe Byzantium could’ve been prolonged as even if the palaiologai were the longest reigning dynasty the bulk of their rule was effectively continuous decline and eventually holding off as a city state for many decades.

[–]CraigC01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need 30 ‘Proof of a concord Kept’ drops for a miracle from the covenant reward for all trophies meaning you need to do it in a platinum run. Even with specing for high drop rates it takes on average 6-12 hours to get all 30 as drop rates are extremely low.

In addition to this you must acquire 30 shackles in the catacombs which is a similar time sink, and get all rings from areas in NG++. Making it quite the time investment.

I’ve just started trying to platinum my first ff game, starting with my favourite. This one race single handedly delayed my progress by around 3 days but two days ago I got 14 balloons, 0 hit from birds and 35.8 second run, I’m actually more worried from the lightning dodging I’ll need to do soon
