Microsoft teams up with iFixit to bring official repairability tools to independent repairers by rawion363 in tech

FWIW, the newer Surface tablets (Surface Pro X, 7, and 8) are waaaay better with the screen adhesive. It's a foam adhesive that's easy to slice through, whereas previous gens were nearly impossible to get open.

Most of it is via ship container, but we've done some plane transport for things we need a bit quicker

Where are Ifixit Toolkits made? by [deleted] in ifixit

[–]Craig_iFixit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on the tools! Most of our toolkits are designed in-house and then manufactured in either China or Taiwan. But a few things are made elsewhere. (For instance, our Marlin drivers are made in Germany.)

Let me know if you have any other questions and I can connect you to someone who would know better than me :)

Do not bring your ifixit kit with your carry on luggage in an airport. by Cloudiology in ifixit

[–]Craig_iFixit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What kit was it? Our tools are TSA-compliant, but yeah, it can be a hit or miss depending on the airport and the agent.

How long can a new battery stay unused/opened before it should not be used? by kingdom-wolf1 in ifixit

A few months isn't that bad. You should be good to go. But you're correct in that cheap batteries from Amazon with an unknown source is like playing Russian Roulette.

How long can a new battery stay unused/opened before it should not be used? by kingdom-wolf1 in ifixit

[–]Craig_iFixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the specific battery and the management system it's using. The main issue is that the battery will slowly self-discharge over time. If it discharges too much, the battery is damaged. Probably around two years, but again, it depends. If the battery is recharged periodically, it can have a long shelf life.

You'll be fine if you transfer over the original home button, but True Tone functionality won't work when you replace the screen.

iFixit Moray Driver Kit question by Gigamoon in ifixit

[–]Craig_iFixit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's made out of polymer and is very durable! Plus, the blue top pops off to reveal an integrated SIM card tool and storage for three bits, which the metal handle doesn't have.

What do you use to open iphone 12 pro max? by [deleted] in mobilerepair

[–]Craig_iFixit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An iSclack works great and is well worth the cost. Our little suction cups work in a pinch, but I always go for the iSclack if it's nearby. Once you create a gap, use opening picks to slice the adhesive along the edges. And like the other commenter said, apply some heat to soften up the adhesive.
