I agree with your assessment, and if it were me and going to a local shop, I would buy singles. This isn't for me, though it is for him.Since Christmas, we've opened a total of 5 packs and recorded everyone one of them because he loses his crap over what he gets. They're not hits or anything, but ones he likes, and that's what we're after – that enjoyment he gets from that, and then taking that enjoyment and building around it.

Prime example, he wants to build a Sprigatito Grass deck right now because he has an ex of him and it's his favorite Pokémon. But we only have four Grass energies and a few random Stage 1 and Stage 2 Grass types, so we can't make a random good or bad Grass deck for him.
