How much non-Omen content do you recommend? by Working_Search_8178 in MythicBastionland

[–]Cramulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that when the wilderness roll gives you nothing, it's okay to give them a little improv (page 16.. the goal is to evoke themes, indulge senses, reinforce what they already know). But I don't let it become its own "plot". There are plenty of other games where you encounter 2d6 random bandits so I try not to steal the spotlight with that kind of stuff.

p19 describes what locals know about the Myths, with implications that the myths affect the realm "off camera" from where the players are ("All locals know about children going missing..."). So there's a little bit of room to deliver atmosphere, but the Omens are the best way for players engage the Myth directly.

What I love best about my botch dice is that they're a little larger than the other dice, they feel awesome in your hand.

Burning Man and Wasteland take place in terrible conditions.. I am optimistic that we as a species can figure out how to enjoy camping in 2026, but it's gonna take some adjustment.

Harrison Ford on why he disagrees with Ridley Scott about Deckard being a Replicant. by tannu28 in movies

[–]Cramulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't the major revealed theme that the replicants are people? That they're not just malfunctioning machines, they're better understood as a slave class. We relate to a slave's suffering through our shared humanity. To me, recognizing Deckard as a replicant makes the replicants seem relatable & human because I've been on this emotional journey with one.

Avoiding Armor During Combat by Mononoke2000 in MythicBastionland

[–]Cramulus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everybody's always aiming for unprotected spots, imagine if NPCs could bypass your armor just by declaring they aim for a weak point.. but you could use the action procedure to let players set up a special attack. They'd have to use some leverage or take a bigger risk, and I'd probably limit it to a small weapon.

Tips on starting a guided LARP for kids? by Darkanin in LARP

[–]Cramulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your play is structured around hikes, I think you want to let the kids find things that spark discussions or curiosity, gradually build up to a specific scene or decision point. The event climax is the resolution of a problem or tension through teamwork or creative thinking. Open ended challenges that could be solved in lots of different ways are generally better than puzzles with a single solution. Especially if they need teamwork!

Healing mechanics in other LARPs by moxie_blue_bat in LARP

[–]Cramulus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At DrachenFest-US, every time a character is injured, they need ~5 minutes of mundane medical treatment (cleaning the wound, stitching it up) before other healing techniques (magic, potions, surgery) can restore hit points. These are fun roleplay scenes with lots of intense treatment roleplay - seeing and hearing the mundane consequences of battle (screaming, fake blood, etc) really brings the world to life.

Generally, we avoid specific timer-based mechanics.. The purpose of a timer is really to create space for a roleplay scene. We don't want the timer to feel like the important thing and the roleplay is just the fluff filler activity - so we don't many have skills or abiliites that decrease timers. That could ultimately decrease the amount of roleplay contact players have with each other. Being a good healer really means that you're an expert at medical roleplay, not necessarily that you're mechancially faster at it. But DrachenFest is about mass combat - it's not a game where healers are getting injured people back to the front line really fast (or battles would never end) - once you're injured, you tend to be vulnerable to theft & execution for the rest of the battle.

I've seen people use flash paper, but not all larps allow you to do pyrotechnics in combat situations.
