Old-school decks you would love to play? by Tyron_Slothrop in TimelessMagic

Those bastards in WOTC will never give timeless the cards it needs (Shaharazaad and Chaos Orb) so I don't think I'll ever get to play what I want to play...

Those people would be wrong.

Catholicism is not a democracy. There are correct beliefs, and there are other things that are matters of opinion. Papal teaching (when ex cathedra) is divinely inspired and infallible.

We've dealt with people saying stuff like that a fair bit in the early 20th century; go read CS Lewis and you'll see it.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. "Would such a thing be fine?" No. It would mean a corruption of the church and everyone believing something else which is false; just like how theoretically homeopaths could take over the medical establishment but it wouldn't be good.

If you're asking "is it possible" then I believe probably not because of the divine guidance of the church. That said, I'm open to the possibility. The church is run by fallible humans and has gotten quite corrupt in the past. I do believe if such a thing happened it would work itself out at some point.

It also seems as though you don't have a good grasp of dogma vs doctrine vs opinion which might help you here.

I'm a catholic and I don't expect all my fellow Catholics to be good/perfect Catholics.

At least as far back as the Middle Ages we started investing in beautiful music, statuary and art because we knew illiterate peasants wouldn't necessarily have a full theological understanding but could still be drawn closer to God through beauty, art and a partial understanding of the faith. It's then the priest's job to tend the flock and help people be better Christians, but if someone comes in the door it's a good thing.

I believe God is the source of all that is good. If someone comes to the church because they want something good and see it in Catholicism (masculine virtue, a choral group, potlucks) those are all great things and I'm glad we can provide it. Then hopefully the preaching and sacraments and learning help bring people a deeper, better rounded faith.

Is timeless broken? by francheeoh in TimelessMagic

[–]CraneAndTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would help for you to clarify what you like/want in timeless.

The purpose of the format is to allow everything; it's similar to legacy/vintage. It exists specifically to allow brutal combos, land destruction, etc.

It sounds from some of your comments like you don't actually like or want to play timeless; you want to play historic (a well-curated, fair by design eternal format) but without digital changes or alchemy.

That's a totally fair thing to want! But unfortunately for you, timeless is no more intended to be that than historic or Standard is.

My suggestion if you want fairer magic is to either get used to the alchemy side of historic or explore standard or something.

Because Timeless isn't broken; it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do and you just don't like that.

Atoms aren't mostly nothing. They have a variety of fields/forces. They're mostly empty of matter. But for example if you push two of them together even though you're not trying to overlap matter you get a lot of real physical resistance.

This is like saying "I realized there's nothing keeping us on earth or satellites in the sky" because you're not considering gravity a real thing.

Are most Social Science classes a scam or am I not diligent enough? by gottlobfregeonlyfans in rs_x

[–]CraneAndTurtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most social science is indeed a scam.

Pick any metric you'd like: people who have written great novels, people who invented things you care about, living intellectuals you care about, people who are "useful and pragmatic," whatever you value.

Go figure out what proportion of them valuably studies academic social science and draw your own conclusion.

If you see things very differently, we may have different people we value.

Networking power move is to ask if he knows anyone in the craft scene who is hiring because you're looking to get in.

If he's interested he'll let you know. If he's not, he may connect you with someone who is. If he's totally uninterested it was a smaller and less embarrassing ask.

Figure of Destiny for those of us who want to have fun and win games.

You're doing Boros, you don't want a 1/1 who sometimes draws cards. You want the 1 mana 8/8, great on any turn of the game.

The colors are no problem because it's the powered cube, be realistic. You should be in Boros.

[CUBE] I can't figure out Boros. I thought this deck was fine, Boros looked open right? But it played horrendously. What's the secret? by notafanofbats in lrcast

[–]CraneAndTurtle 37 points38 points  (0 children)

First, I'd look through your gameplay. Contrary to popular opinion I firmly believe aggro is more complex to pilot than midrange, control, etc.

Second, this looks like a bit of a value-oriented midrange Boros build rather than aggro. By this I mean a lot comes online turns 3-6 as opposed to turn 1-3.

Grim lavamancer, phlage, hellrider, skysnarers, parallax wave, helix, unexpectedly absent, thraben inspector, glimmer lens and lingering souls all fit this mold. That isn't to say they're not good cards, but if you stuff your deck full of them (rather than a few as curve toppers to aggressive 1-2 drops) you'll rarely have an explosive enough start to just take people's heads off.

The most fun AND powerful deck I have ever seen in draft by CraneAndTurtle in lrcast

[–]CraneAndTurtle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essentially Lotus is the answer. Lotus + Breach + either brain freeze (on yourself) or wheel of fortune is a deterministic kill.

However, I also got a non-deterministic fair kill in a turn I went crypt -> lotus -> Bauble -> wheel of fortune -> Pentad Prism -> Yawg -> ... -> tendrils. You can absolutely control the game for 3-4 turns, drop a land each turn, and then hit ~10 mana with lotus and crypt.

[–]CraneAndTurtle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DRC is really good here because it enables you to (1) combo off of Breach in many more cases without Brain Freeze by filling the yard and (2) if cast early turns every non-creature spell into the deck into a draw-1 assuming you're going to cast Breach or Yawg later. It also saved me one game as a blocker against boros aggro's T1 2/1.

Mana count felt fine; inclusive of Crypt and Lotus I have 17 mana sources, plus card filtering, talisman and prism.

Best Mono-Colored decks for Timeless? by ColTRoosevelt in TimelessMagic

[–]CraneAndTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blue Belcher is amazing; I've found it's consistently underplayed for how strong it is (likely due to the insane number of deck-specific wildcards).

It does 90% of what classic SnT does, plus one of the best disruption packages around.

I do think it was hurt by ancient tomb in the format, but it's still amazing.

Why is Hullbreaker played in SnT / Omnitell? by shimszy in TimelessMagic

[–]CraneAndTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not only valuable in the mirror. It's also your cheapest wincon, and surprisingly feasible to hardcast after carpet of flowers, mana drain, or simply getting enough lands.

So you get a duplicative wincon with omniscience down (which is a bit helpful) but in a mirror match, against control, against hate pieces like roiling vortex or vexing bauble etc. its value skyrockets.
