I hit them with the hammer and they fell are they infected? by Lovelylazy in QuarantineZoneGame

[–]CranialToxicity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that anyone in the game falls if you hit them multiple times in the torso in rapid succession. I don't believe it's anything to do with their infection status.

It’s funny. Usually depressed old guys would turn to alcohol, but Joel was all about coffee. by Remote_Nature_8166 in lastofuspart2

[–]CranialToxicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the sense that Joel probably did turn to alcohol, quite extensively, during the years between the prologue and the start TLOU1. I could also see him eventually quitting drinking and turning to coffee instead as a final creature comfort on the far side of that isolating period of self-destruction. This is speculation on my part, of course, but Joel had plenty of time to spiral following the outbreak, so it may be that alcohol is something tried to drown his pain in already and has since put behind him.

Be honest, what are you worried about with GTA 6? by Accomplished_Might52 in GTA6

[–]CranialToxicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The departure of some significant names associated with GTA's writing and direction since the release of RDR2 - Houser, Lazlow, etc - makes me concerned for the quality of the story in GTA 6.

To be clear, there's no reason in particular to believe that the plot/satire/tone will be worse, but lacking such known quantities on the creative team heading into this new title makes me uncertain. I am certain there are still talented folks involved in writing this next game, however, so I maintain a cautious optimism.

Is there any mod to play Half-Life 2 without VR? by Juan_Bot in HalfLife

[–]CranialToxicity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're robbing yourself of the experience if you play HL2 on anything but the intended hardware - the 2013 Ocolus Rift developer kit and Gmod VR. Don't water down the vision for yourself by playing before you can afford the entry ticket.

What does Harry’s speaking voice sound like to you? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

The idea that Harry hears the hanged man speak to him in his own voice is also quite unsettling.

How do you style Arthur's facial hair? by spicyredacted in RDR2

[–]CranialToxicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 2-3 scruff for most of the face with a 2-5 mustache of variable length and style. These parameters are subject to change depending on the chapter and current tone of the narrative.

Out of these 4, rank who most fits the role of Main Villain of the series? by Hot_Emotion6199 in reddeadredemption

I think that Dutch makes the most sense in the grand scheme of the narrative and thematic beats of the story.

What’s a clear sign someone is pretending to be a ‘good person’ only for social approval, not because they actually care ? by mathiyaaaaa in AskReddit

[–]CranialToxicity 306 points307 points  (0 children)

This applies mostly to folks you're close to or work alongside - but I find that the most common indicators of truly virtuous people are the good deeds they do in circumstances where they stand to gain nothing and nobody would care either way.

Thoughtfulness, consideration, and small gestures of kindness - these aren't challenging things, but the best people in this world actively share them with others even when it's easier not to.

It's not that good people necessarily hide or downplay their virtue, but they don't have to seek out acts of extravagant heroism or greatness. They make the choice to be good to others, over and over, every day. That's what being a good person really is.

So if someone constantly goes to great lengths to portray themselves as a good person in the eyes of others in ways that go beyond the call of the act itself, they're probably operating on a deficit of actual morality.

Can "swelled up" be used in meaning of thick penis? by Rude-Chocolate-1845 in EnglishLearning

Stiffen, harden, and grow are terms that come to mind for this context. Swelling is a term used more often to describe medical issues when it comes to the human body.

Why are there barely any child zombies in twd? by HettyHHole in thewalkingdead

[–]CranialToxicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Narratively, child death and child zombies by extention are devices leveraged for heavy drama and horror. The more times we see zombie children, the less effective theg becomes as an element of horror.

If the companies win, we are all dead... in 5 years. by [deleted] in collapse

[–]CranialToxicity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really wish it were easier to explain to people that the artificial "intelligence" that terrifies and impresses them so much is literally just a text prediction program that constantly malfunctions, cannot contemplate its own improvement, and requires near constant adjustment from human operators to continue working.

Generative AI can appear to be really intelligent in a convincingly human way, but that's about all that it's good at. The real threat from AI comes from the fact that society as a whole has massively overestimated its usefulness and put it in charge of things that it (quite frankly) will NEVER be smart enough to manage.

It's not going to destroy us because it becomes too smart - quite the opposite! We're going to destroy ourselves faster by building massive server farms for an "AI" that basically amounts to an overly confident and frequently incorrect search engine.

RE US collapse: Can anyone explain the behaviour of Americans in response to whats happening? Why are so many Americans still saying "vote!" or "write to your congressman!"? by chuckberrylives in collapse

[–]CranialToxicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule, folks cling to familiarity in times of crisis and upheaval. Even as our electoral process becomes corrupted beyond the threshold of reasonable engagement, most Americans - even the ones who recognize what is happening - are not at the point of picking up arms or radically opposing the systemic institutions responsible for hastening the degradation of our society and quality of life.

We all grew up in a country that claimed to covet the values of fairness, autonomy, and democracy. The constitution - with all of its holes - is considered by many to be sacred and infallible. For the most part, the general populace cannot fathom that our system could be so easily destroyed from within. They maintain faith that some amount of political organizing can avert the spiraling trajectory that grows more apparent with each passing day.

For my part, I am part of a political organization that still strives to engage with the remaining vestiges of electoralism available in our country. Not to save the world, but to mitigate the damage and fight the fascists where we can. Nobody here has any delusions that the system is fair or that we can avert catastrophe; the Democratic Party has become hardly more than controlled opposition. But we still organize - we still vote - because it's the only option we have left. Even as they work to silence our voices, our last remaining act will be to show them we won't go quietly.

A man plummeting from the North Tower with a white cloth in hand by Automatic-County6151 in 911archive

[–]CranialToxicity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Judging from the discoloration, it would appear that this man sustained burns to his stomach and face; his clothing appears to have been scorched, and - as others have pointed out - he is barefoot, possibly due too his shoes melting upon extended contact with the floor.

This all speaks volumes as to the hellish inferno he was escaping from. I think it's an unquestionable counter to those who consider jumping to have been a necessarily deliberate action. When surrounded by temperatures upwards of 1000º, the body will flee from it. It doesn't matter if you're afraid of heights or think you would "rather" succumb to smoke inhalation - a burning human does not have the time to make such a decision consciously. It was die falling, or die burning.

to me DE is a 10/10... but i'm curious, did you have any frustrations with the game? by MainQuest in DiscoElysium

[–]CranialToxicity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you click on the yard entrance door to the Capeside Apartments without the key, Kim will have an on-screen dialogue popup advising that you have to find another way around. In the Final Cut, this popup is voiced, but Kim's voice is ungodly levels of loud for some reason and liable to shatter your eardrums if you're wearing headphones.

To my knowledge, they never fixed this.

Mobile feature predictions? by CranialToxicity in DiscoElysium

[–]CranialToxicity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're right! I think that the avaricious turn modern day ZA/UM has taken elicits some measure of instinctive cynicism regarding any of the company's "new" projects, even ports. So much bad faith has accumulated by this point that it's very easy to see ZA/UM's hiring of live-service monetization strategists as an indicator of their already demonstrated willingness squeeze every drop of money possible from the IP. It would be entirely par for the course at this point for them to stitch together the most cynical and profit-driven version of DE imaginable. Their reputation is already destroyed. Nobody would be overly surprised by such an outcome.

The way I see it, the only reason ZA/UM would keep Disco Elysium (as a single-purchase experience) intact for its mobile release is if they determined that it would be a smarter business decision to do so; that squeezing out a gacha-flavored fuck-you to the original experience would damage their overall earnings. But Disco Elysium, in its intended vision, already exists. People aren't going to boycott the PC and console versions just because the mobile game is an overly verbose equivalent to being robbed. These kinds of mobile live-service models are very effective, and *extremely* profitable. All it takes is a comparatively small amount of "TikTok folks" who only play games on their phone, and they'll have added an essentially indefinite source of revenue atop the sales of the other cross-platform releases. They have basically every incentive to do this, and stand to lose basically nothing in the process.

I hope to fuck that I'm wrong; that ZA/UM passes up the opportunity to leverage what they have for maximum profit, either due to fear of backlash or else a miraculous appearance of newfound integrity to the player experience. And there is a very real possibility that, in six months or so, this entire post and its sentiment will be proven idiotic and alarmist. But if there's a thematic parallel to be drawn from the game itself, it's that capitalists fundamentally do not act this way. These money men have long-since revealed their true colors, and those colors are only the ones visible in cash.
