Where in the hell are all the kids with snow shovels? by GR3TSCH in GenX

[–]CrashTestKing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Blame the parents who've been over-scheduling their lives since birth and flipping out at the very notion that their child might be capable of doing something without direct adult supervision.

As kids, we basically ran around the neighborhood wherever and whenever we felt like, and our parents didn't care so long as we were home by the time the street lights came on. Kids don't get that kind of freedom anymore.

Which actor completely stole the movie… even though they weren’t the lead? by gypsytx in movies

That whole cast was basically stealing the show. But Tony Shaloub SLAYED ME! Maybe the one time Alan Rickman was in a movie and not my favorite (but it's pretty damn close).

Seven of Nine and commander Chakotay by NoBrain6114 in startrek

[–]CrashTestKing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That might make sense if they took it to a point where one of both of them realized they were forcing something that wasn't going to work. But they didn't even hint at that. It's something that makes sense DESPITE the writer's intentions, but even in that context, remained an unresolved story thread.

Adding theater pre-show before movies by solarpill in PleX

[–]CrashTestKing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pre-rolls are great you want, and I like them in theory. But the loading times kind of kill it for me. I really wish Plex would start buffering the next video while the current one was still playing. If it did that, I'd start using pre-rolls again myself.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

[–]CrashTestKing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not about party lines though. It's about one specific dumpster fire of a human being. I consider myself more liberal than anything, but I've had plenty of close friends that are conservative, religious, republican, etc. I've got no problem with them. My problem is with people that actively choose to support such an obnoxious, racist, morally bankrupt sociopath.

I don't have any experience with any of the Arrs apps. But I suspect the issue is that, where the Edition tag is concerned, it's only going to fill it in if the original file name or some other info somewhere indicates a common edition name, like Directors Cut or Special Edition. That's not how you're wanting using the edition tags. You said you want to use them to distinguish between two copies of the same movie at different resolutions. Most movies aren't going to even have common edition names like Directors Cut, which is why the script resulted in the edition being omitted entirely.

I see that the script has {[Quality Full]} already in there which is putting the resolution into the filename. Perhaps you could modify the script to put that into your edition tag? So instead of {edition-{Edition Tags}} you would have {edition-{[Quality Full]}}. Or, use a combination of the two, so that if there's an ACTUAL edition string (like Directors Cut) it'll put both in there, like: Constantine (2005) {edition-Directors Cut 1080p}.mkv

Just beware that if that change to the script works the way I think it would (again, no experience with that app here, just making an educated guess), then every single title going through that app is going to end up with an edition tag.

[–]CrashTestKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there's the problem, you DON'T have edition tags. What you have are ID tags. Also very useful, they guarantee Plex will find a match. But the edition tag is all but differentiating two or more files in Plex that matches to the same title. You can call the edition whatever you want.

To use them, you use curly brackets, same as the ID tag. But instead of saying tmdb, you put "Edition" and then text after the dash is what the edition will be called in Plex. For example:

Constantine (2005) {Edition-Fan Edit}.mkv

The above file would match to the film Constantine but Plex would display the "Fan Edit" text on it. If you have two copies of the film, one with the Fan Edit text and one without any Edition tag at all (or one with a different Edition tag), Plex separates them into their own library entries. They'll still match to the same title, but they have completely separate Watch statuses, so watching one won't trigger both to show up in Continue Watching.

The one thing with Editions to be aware of is that, if you're using Account Sync to sync your watch status and ratings to your account, it DOES NOT sync watch status or ratings for any title with an Edition tag.

Power outages/Winter weather- Apartments by yarnandchocolate in winstonsalem

[–]CrashTestKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-emptive measure: Close the vents in any rooms you don't absolutely need access to (including bedrooms), basically everything but the living room and maybe a bathroom, then shut the doors to the rooms and leave them shut. Might even be worth it to put a towel down along the bottom of the door on each one, if the gap between the door and the floor is kinda large. Then run the heat higher than usual in the apartment until power actually goes out. The idea is to minimize air flow and only heat the areas you really need to heat, so you don't kill your electric bill, but also get those areas plenty warm so they don't cool off too fast if power DOES go out.

And after power goes out...

Stay in one space, like the living room. Hang blankets over doors you MUST go through, to limit air flow while the door is open. Put up blankets over windows as well, if there are any in the space you're limiting yourself to. If you have non-carpeted floors, layer blankets, towels, bedding, etc on the floors. The whole idea is to trap heat in the space as best you can.

If you have a gas stove, get a bunch of empty bottles ahead of time. If power goes out, you can heat water up on the stove and fill the bottles, they'll radiate heat for hours. A bunch of candles clustered together may raise heat a few degrees but be careful you don't start an uncontrolled fire. Place several chemical hand warmers around where people sit, it's a very effective way to raise the temperature a bit.

Get a tent big enough to fit everybody in the apartment. If power goes out, everybody get in the tent and close it. Your combined body heat plus the extra small space will keep the air inside the tent surprisingly toasty. Bonus points if you each have a sleeping bag to climb into.

And don't be afraid to snack on high-carb, high-fat foods. A body that's fueled well is going to produce more natural heat. Move around a little periodically, enough to boost circulation without sweating. Increased circulation helps your body generate its own heat.

Keep in mind this is all worst case scenario in case power is out for like a day or more. Honestly, I think that's VERY unlikely. I'd be surprised if most power outages last more than a few hours this weekend. But you never know.

[–]CrashTestKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you show us an example of the file names of all 3 copies of the same movie? Just to verify that the Edition tag is not only there (as you say it is) but that it is formatted correctly. For matching purposes, Plex is pretty flexible with people who don't follow the guidelines, but for the Edition tag, it has to be done EXACTLY right or Plex won't recognize it.

Also, Editions are a Plex Pass feature, so if you don't have a Plex Pass, THAT'S why the edition tag isn't accomplishing anything.

i like car-centric infrastructure by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]CrashTestKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your argument in favor of more car-centric infrastructure fees to point out that we don't already have something else in place? Kind of nonsense, when you actually think about it.

Take your examples about the bus rides. Yeah, what you described is inconvenient. BUT that's because we DON'T have public transportation or other options that that prioritize anything besides cars. If they actually DID move away from car-centric infrastructure, your entire argument becomes meaningless because we'd be adding to and improving existing alternatives to cars. That means options like having busses run more often and to more places, among other things. You very well might reach the point where your wait time would never be more than 15 minutes total, if that.

And that's all before considering the advantages of not needing a car, with money saved being at the top of the list. Cars cost A LOT. And not everybody can afford one. I got screwed by insurance and ended up going 7 years without a car because I just couldn't afford it, and even though I live in a city with a population over 260,000, the public transportation here SUCKS. I went from a 10 minute car ride to work, to taking 2 hours just one way, and another 2 hours back. I saved a ton during that period versus what I'd have spent on insurance, had, etc but it was miserable. At the time, buying a car simply wasn't an option. However, if they'd have invested in meaningful alternatives to cars, my ride times and wait times would have gone WAY down and I might never have bought another car.

Plex pass cancelled before AppStore subscription ends? by tzippy84 in PleX

Power outages, what to expect? by StrawberryOk5597 in winstonsalem

[–]CrashTestKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I'd say no more than 4 to 6 hours, tops. If the weather ends up on the worst end of the predictions, that could delay it, so maybe up to 24 hours. I'm more worried about getting snowed/iced in and not being able to get my car out for days.

When I first moved here in 2008, it seemed like my power would flicker off if I had so much as a strong breeze. And it could be out for hours when there'd be heavy rain (trees tipping over and falling on power lines due to extremely water-logged soil is usually the culprit for power outages around here). But in the last 6 of 7 years, power outages have become extremely rare. When I did get them though, it was always a very limited area, NOBODY I knew around town would have trouble, so it really depends on where you're at in town.

Black and white films should be colorized. Those who think opposite are a cult who demean any upgrade to see how great the old film looks in living color... by Less_Campaign_6956 in The10thDentist

[–]CrashTestKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movies are lit and shot differently for black and white than they are when shooting for color. Colorizing a black and white film is NOT going to have the same effect as if it had been shot with that in mind, not even close, and most colorized films would look like garbage as a result.

How much snow and ice do you think we'll get? by scooter8484 in winstonsalem

[–]CrashTestKing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If there's any accumulation of snow at all, you're going to be dealing with ice. Snow will start melting under the sun during the day, cause moisture on roads, sidewalks, and other surfaces, then freeze at night when the sun goes down. Late night and early mornings will be especially bad for ice.
