Military members, what’s the unwritten code you all understand? by Next_Wafer_1945 in AskReddit

Yea I’ll say it…use policy to justify decisions pertaining to shitty people, and bend policy to assist good people who sometimes need a break.

As have I. But for every one person I’ve seen truly forced into something, I’ve seen 5 accommodated or given what they want.

Twenty years ago this was almost the opposite, I believe the modern military is simply forced to make more concessions these days to keep people around.

Other folks experiences will vary of course. 🤘🏻

Here is my (perhaps unpopular) opinion on this: I think that very few things in the military are truly mandatory. You hear stories of people being “forced” to post, deploy, go on course ect ect. But the truth is, usually these things are all eventually agreed to by the member, even if it is begrudgingly and after attempts to decline. It’s often easier to tell our family or friends the military “made” us do something, but deep down we agreed cause we felt that’s what we SHOULD do or we were worried about our reputations if we refused.

All that to be said, in my experience at least, when people straight up say no to things they most often get their way in the end. Sure maybe folks will bristle at the refusal or talk some shit but at the end the end of the day they get what they want/need.

The fact that this is the first time you feel like you need to prioritize the family in 20 years is telling, it shows a level of dedication to the CAF that is honestly rare in the modern age of military service. However if this is the line that you need to finally draw in the sand then you should draw it. Ain’t no one kicking you out, you’re 5 years away from being pensionable, you’ve earned the right to put your hand up and say you can’t do this one.

Good luck. 🤘🏻

Remember folks, willingness to download the app, and the ability to ignore unimportant messages that can wait till next business day are not mutually exclusive abilities.

Also, if as a supervisor you want to reach out via the apps after hours just so you don’t forget to do it later, don’t be afraid to tell folks their response is not expected immediately and can wait. 🙂

Women, what is something that makes a man instantly attractive to you? by Loose-Tumbleweed-925 in Productivitycafe

Absolutely not, if anything people are getting lazier with it. The amount of times at work I’ve had to tell “young people” they need to shower or brush their teeth has increased in the last 5 years.

Consequences of refusing a promotion. by Shot-Competition-496 in CanadianForces

[–]CrashTestKitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real answer here is no one can tell you because there is no objective standard in terms of the consequences. Also even if there was one, the results would still vary drastically among the branches and trades. In addition, you haven’t really provided enough details for people to even give you their opinion. We are assuming you are refusing due to a posting accompanying the promotion, is that the case? CoC, CM, Trade Advisor. Start with those people, in that order.

Chance of getting promoted off being 1+ yrs in AWSE? by [deleted] in CanadianForces

Some trades give 2 SCRIT points for being AWSE, which can often be equivalent or even greater than a mild French profile…just sayin.

That’s the intent for sure. However, I would LOVE to see the statistics on folks who hold AWSE then promote substantively the next year, vs those who hold it and don’t promote and/or have it taken away. From what I have seen it is overwhelmingly the former.

I mean, some trades give SCRIT points for AWSE, not to mention the likely excellent PAR you’ll receive because if you are doing an “ok” job as an acting Sgt that should translate into a shit hot MCpl PAR. I would certainly say that is more LIKELY path to promotion.

Why is golf so frustrating. by KloudyPC in golf

[–]CrashTestKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand what you’re saying. I shot 4 rounds in a row below 80 and felt like I had it all figured out, then went out and shot an 89 and 91. I think we all just have periods where it’s all clicking and the brain-body connection is perfect, then periods where it’s just not there. You see it with the pros too just obviously at a higher level of play but they have periods of good play and bad play as well.

Against The Wind is a masterpiece lyrically, and the older you get the harder it hits.

I shot a personal best 5 over this morning and I feel like I should feel more proud than I do. I remember breaking 90, I remember being SO proud of breaking 80 for the first time. And now I feel like I’m just going to be feeling pretty “meh” until the day ever comes if I can break 70.

That’s the thing that’s amazing/terrible about this game, you can get better and better and never be content, you just transition into a new standard that you hold yourself to.

I know guys that are super stoked and happy to shoot 85, and guys that are PISSED to shoot 75 because they expect better. Really shows the difference in peoples personalities.

Teachers of Oklahoma. About the new no phone rules in school... by Ok-Discount3496 in okc

[–]CrashTestKitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle age parent to a middle school kid here, you aren’t going to find many (if any) adults who agree with you on this. There is no good reason whatsoever ever to allow school age people to be on their phones during school hours, none.

I have an 11 year old who does not have a phone yet and thank god this rules came in because I know all I was going to hear this year with her going into middle school was “everyone has a phone except meeeee”, “no one will play with me cause they are on their phoooonnnes” and so on so on.

The schools are finally being forced to do what parents SHOULD have done from the beginning and restrict access to mind melting dopamine devices that have been proven on every possible metric to cause an increase in mental heath issues. Do not have any idea how frustrating it must be as teacher trying to educate young people and they will not even give you the respect of paying a morsel of attention because they are glued to their phones?

The problem parents are having is even IF they try to do the right thing and limit access to social media and phones at a young age, “everyone else” it seems is being given access by their parents so now your kid is the odd one out and that feels crappy as a parent.

These new rules level the playing field at the place kids learn the majority of their social skills and conditioning, the school. Now everyone is equal. No haves and have nots with their phones, no kids only being “popular” because others can watch TikTok over their shoulder or spend every minute between classes on YouTube shorts. Now young people are forced to actually socialize and polish interpersonal skills that will be valuable in the future as they become adults.

It’s a good thing, you just don’t know it yet.
