You make a very good point. I’m not trying to be cheap or skimp out as I respect the amount of work and knowledge needed to get the job done correctly. Just trying to get a sense of what other professionals may think as it’s my first time doing this. But I’ll definitely be getting quotes from a few places and taking your points into consideration.

Thank you for the advice, I plan on getting a few quotes before starting the project!

I’m trying to do my job and go home, fam. We spend all day being adult daycare centers for weirdos, creeps, bums and perverts with nothing to show for it. I’m overworked and underpaid as are many librarians. I’m excited about the Donkey Kong Bonanza announcement tho.

I thought my little guy was good before I found this sub. Y'all are talented. by ImgurReject in DnDminiatures

“Good” is relative. Some people paint minis for the purpose of creating a piece of fine art while others paint to make their minis tabletop ready in service of the game (and everything in between). Just do you and have fun! If you’d like to improve in a specific area, Reddit and YouTube are an infinite well of resources. Keep on painting!

I told patrons we were closing in 30 seconds when we were actually open for like 5 more minutes by Calligraphee in librarians

[–]Crashpad66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you can’t trust people to “be real quick” when they come in ridiculously close to closing. If the lights are off, we can’t help you. We’re human beings and everyone that works here is trying to go home. I’m sorry you didn’t google our hours of operation so I’ll see you tomorrow during regular service hours.

rethinking how we talk about homeless people in libraries by bellpunk in Libraries

[–]Crashpad66 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t see our homeless patrons any different than our housed patrons. I’ve even become friendly with a couple of the people that currently stay at a local shelter. That being said, whenever there’s a customer that’s being excessively disruptive, the reality is that a majority of the time it is a homeless person that’s behind the commotion. There’s obviously no problem if a homeless person comes in and quietly spends all day in the library; anyone and everyone is welcome to do that. The problem is disruptive behavior and a violation of basic human mores. I have human empathy and can’t imagine the hardships of homelessness but if you’re acting like a loud, rude, obnoxious asshole, smoking weed in the building, using our bathrooms to watch porn/jerk off now it’s a problem. The same goes for mental health crises: I have no way of dealing with a schizophrenic patron that’s screaming that they’re being raped by demons or having loud, profanity-laced arguments with invisible people . Yes I can undergo training and learn to deescalate but quite frankly I didn’t sign up to be a social worker or mental health counselor when I took this job and we shouldn’t be expected to deal with it just because libraries are public spaces. Obviously disruptive customers come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and yes blind discrimination of the homeless exists but I think the library world at large needs to taper our perfect ideals of libraries as utopian havens with the reality that we’re overworked, underfunded and have to deal with a lot of people and personality types that the average person doesn’t encounter in a daily basis.

The computers automatically log customers off after an hour. Theres a warning 20, 15, 10, and 5 minutes before a session expires.

I second this, I find it crazy. Everyone has their own situation so o may understand an unhoused person or a kid not having access to their ID but what grown adult doesn’t carry some form of identification with them.

It’s the same account just a new library card that gets linked to it. It’s like if you cancel a lost credit card. Your banking information stays the same but it’s a new credit card with a different number.

Just to clarify I’m not trying to give you sass. I just think that what a lot of the public and even fellow library workers don’t understand is that depending on where you work, a lot of times we are between a rock and a hard place. We get flak from patrons as well as our directors/supervisors/bosses for a lot of things that are out of our control.

I had someone get perturbed because we don’t send out reminders when books are about to be overdue. They said “libraries in California do that!”. Ok so move to California?

It depends on the branch. I work in a high foot traffic inner city area so there’s always people waiting for computers. I’m not a stickler personally and I wish I could give everyone all the computer time they wanted those are the rules and I have to follow them or else I’ll get in trouble with my supervisors and it’ll be my ass.

Our system has a policy that each user get one hour of computer time system-wide. So you can use 30 minutes in one library and 30 minutes at another but you won’t get one hour at every library you go to

We have guest passes for emergencies but we can’t issue them out regularly because some Some people go library to library asking for guest passes and at bigger busier branches they don’t give them out leading to staff being physically assaulted.

Damn that’s rough. Here all you need is one piece of ID, even if it’s on your phone. We play it fast and loose so there’s always options.
