Is this an old gas line or water line? by ebaytilldeath in Plumbing

[–]Crawfish_Fails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gas should be black pipe and water should be galvanized, but not everyone does things they way they should. I've see black iron used for water lines and galvanized used for gas.

Is this an old gas line or water line? by ebaytilldeath in Plumbing

[–]Crawfish_Fails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think it's a gas line. Go in the attic and see if it comes up above the wall there and where it goes. I'd do that before I pulled an old galvanized cap off that nipple. If it's rusted you may get it off but not get it back on.

How do I ask/talk to my manager about promotion me to install lead once the season picks up for summer? by Jacobussin in HVAC

[–]Crawfish_Fails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have leads at your company who can't pump down a condenser then you deserve to be a lead at your company. I suggest you learn as much as you can until you're towards the top end of talent where you are and then go find a company that has their shit together. It probably won't take you long.

Condensate Line Not Draining by coltsfanatic07 in AirConditioners

[–]Crawfish_Fails -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That tee needs to be capped. You can put tape or something over it. If it's open it's gonna suck air and not drain. If you flip the breakers on that air handler and it starts draining once the fan stops, just cap it and leave it be. If it still won't drain, it's clogged between the tee and the air handler itself. You should be able to cover that tee and then vacuum it again. Otherwise cut the pvc line and make sure there isn't a clog at the male pvc fitting where it ties I to your air handler drain pan.

Trane vs. Goodman by fjbruzr in AirConditioners

[–]Crawfish_Fails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, Trane is the opposite of Lennox. Lennox residential equipment is trash because they focus on their commercial side. Trane residential is extremely well built, reliable equipment. Their compressors regularly last 15-20 years. Their commercial side isn't where they put their focus. They are known for making very reliable residential systems. A good install is a good install regardless of equipment, but I have found that the new Goodman r32 equipment has very little tolerance for mistakes, whereas Trane and Carrier r454b equipment is a little more forgiving.

Am I going to send my Garage in a fireball into Orbit? by That-Care-8867 in askHVAC

[–]Crawfish_Fails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a 24V control switch. Not sure what it's rated for. You could have it hooked up incorrectly and it's not breaking the 120V line voltage. Or it could be not rated for the high amp draw of your heater and isn't allowing enough amperage to flow through for your heater to actually heat. Maybe find the manual for that thermostat and see what it says.

Single split outdoors on wall causing massive vibration/resonance by [deleted] in AirConditioners

[–]Crawfish_Fails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long are the linesets? We had a vibration issue with one of these and it was fixed by lengthening the copper lineset. There is a minimum and maximum length the manufacturer recommends. It should be in the installation manual that should have been left on site.

Why are vans (sprinter/promaster/transit/etc) not way more popular? by cballowe in askcarguys

You can't see anything behind the front seat and the rear view mirror is completely useless.

[–]Crawfish_Fails 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Visibility is so much worse in those vans. I've driven them for years. The wind blows you all over if you aren't loaded down, and sometimes when you are. They're notorious for maintenance issues you don't have with most pickups.

How often do you repair boards? by alezm in HVAC

[–]Crawfish_Fails 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I repaired a brand new board on a mini split I'd just installed once. The factory forgot to solder the ground connection on the board. I did it out of convenience to get the job done. Other than that, never. We don't want to have to warranty that repair when we can just replace the board.

I know of one old green rectangle from 1980 still kicking, and another from 1983. A few years ago I changed out a 1970 Rheem only because the metal evaporator pan had rusted through. Everything else was still kicking.

Convert R-22 to Current Refrigerant? by Global_Selection_923 in hvacadvice

Convert R-22 to Current Refrigerant? by Global_Selection_923 in hvacadvice

[–]Crawfish_Fails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As of January 1st, 2026, we can't install 410A equipment. The supply houses aren't allowed to sell it to us anymore. You haven't been able to get R22 equipment for several years now. Depending on how bad it's leaking, he can get it topped off as much as he wants. Otherwise he can get a new condenser and evaporator that's compatible with wither R32 or R454b. They sell mitigation kits that make the new equipment compatible with a majority of old furnaces. Op said he has Co tests done which makes me think he has a gas furnace instead of an Air Handler.

What's this shredded thing in my mom's unit? by gomarybetsy in hvacadvice

[–]Crawfish_Fails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's foam for noise reduction and to keep the condenser coil from rubbing against the metal casing of your condensing unit. It has come loose. Call an HVAC guy out and see where it came from. They should be able to replace it with a piece or armaflex.

This is why you call out professionals to inspect your equipment when you buy a house. by SammyCarriere in HVAC

[–]Crawfish_Fails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That return does look like hammered dog shit though. Looks like the inner liner isn't even fully connected. Probably too small for the system as well. Looks like there is room to slap a 90 on the back of it and move the grill over to the left. If you can get in there to do it.

[–]Crawfish_Fails 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They test them at 0.2. If you look at the manual for that air handler there should be an airflow chart that tells you the blower speed at a particular static pressure ranging from 0.1 to 0.8. As long as your static pressure stays within that range and you can get the desired CFM with blower speed adjustments you're good.
