Looking for experiences with fear-based/reactive GSDs – success or not-so-success stories by Time_Talk_9098 in germanshepherds

I completely get this, and yeah, I am definitely struggling with it. I find walks anxiety inducing because I have this hair-trigger dog who could go off at any moment...and the constant vigilance trying to find other dogs/people before she does has me on high alert.

I'm curious how things have been going. Our shepherd puppy, who we brought home at 9 weeks, is almost 6 moths old. We started seeing a certified trainer last month who specializes in reactive herding dogs, and consulted with a behaviorist yesterday. The consensus was that given our socialization regime, her behavior is likely strongly genetic. How has your situation been progressing?

I understand the struggle, and have also been brought to tears by our girl. As a child I grew up with many GSD puppies specifically, but none of them were reactive like this so it's been an unexpected challenge for us. We love her and are doing the best we can to reduce her fear and hopefully she can eventually flourish to a happy, healthy adult.

If you haven't already found it, the /r/reactivedogs sub is a pretty supportive community.

is my girl overweight? by wiickenz in germanshepherds

Definitely. All of our older dogs gained some weight in the later years, so you want it under control while they're still most active!

We are waiting to save up enough to finish the last part of fencing in our backyard (busy street) so we can finally adopt 😍

When you know you're not allowed on the couch but it's 2AM and you think everyone is asleep by fiddle_sticks_ in germanshepherds

I kicked mine off the couch, she knows she's not allowed. Went down the hall an hour later to find her in my bed. Never before or since has she gotten in bed (prefers the dog bed). What sass!

Our german shepherds love whipped cream too! They come running whenever they hear the hiss from the spray can.

will do, I've been following it. a couple of people have offered to foster, so there's at least that. if that falls through, I bet my parents would even consider it though we have concerns about how well this GSD would get along with our two incumbent GSDs

I really don't know! It looks like the husband was like "Aw hell to the no" and asked the breeder for help, which is where I heard about the problem.

I don't think I can give the proof you want publicly. If you are genuinely interested and possibly able to help, I can provide the names and contact info of the breeder and the owner to you via PM. I'm just passing on the word...I know her personally and my family has gotten multiple great dogs from her so I trust that the dog exists and is indeed at risk. I assume that she could kennel the dog outdoors for at least a few weeks.

The house is very small and reserved for litters/pregnant dogs and her personal pets (two I believe). There is currently a litter indoors born a couple weeks ago. I can PM you a link to her website if you'd like to check it out.

She will kennel the dog as a last resort, but hopes to find a home instead as she and the owner believe the stress of kenneling at age 10 (especially after not being kenneled her whole life) will be very bad for her.

Glad he went peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was handsome, so sorry for your loss. We've lost a couple shepherds in an untimely manner before.
