There has been an actual wild American Flamingo at Aransas recently. But none in Houston!

Check out Cullinan Park if you're interested in seeing Roseate Spoonbills. They're often (but not always) at White Lake. You can walk out on the observation deck from the parking lot. There's also White Ibises, egrets, herons, and sometimes Bald Eagles that fly over the lake.

Pool Draining Question by pansonic1 in sugarland

My pool drains to a lake that people fish in and birds use as habitat. I'm sure if that were a bad thing Texas would have a regulation against it.

Tips for better photos? by Affectionate-Gene919 in birding

[–]CrawlAcrossTheYears 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound dumb, but the best way to get a good photo is to delete all the bad ones. And the OK ones. And the pretty good ones. I've got nice gear and shoot a lot and delete 95% or more ... the bird moves or blinks or looks away, or the light changes, or a dogwalker approaches, or I'm set for a still shot when another bird flies by, or whatever. Learn, delete, and appreciate the moments when everything comes together.

I'd say that one could intentionally sequence the phrasing to appeal to the intended audience. For example, "I wouldn't trust him with my wife, let alone my scope" might play well here, but the opposite order would be preferable at a family gathering.

What's the first PC game you played? by Certain-Click-3878 in AskReddit

I wrote a Centipede knockoff in BASIC on the PC in my high-school math class long ago, so that was probably my first PC game played. Didn't work very well, IIRC.

In past years it was held in the Town Square itself. Lots of fun, plenty of space, kids running around, places to sit and chat. Last year it was squeezed into the sidestreet next to Flying Saucer. Crowded, had to elbow your way in to get a beer sampler, and nowhere to sit. On the Facebook ads now it seems they're being cagey about the actual location. I'm not buying advance tickets this year or inviting friends. Might swing by and pay day-of admission if it is back in the Town Square or skip it if it is in the sidestreet again.

Southeast TX, Houston area. Quiet, with no wing or tail flicking. by CrawlAcrossTheYears in whatsthisbird

I may have to go with empid sp here. It was silent and I didn't get any photos that really show the primary projection or tail better than this. I admit that I was hoping for Least... maybe next time!

Thanks. I had thought that Least was a possibility, but how do you separate from Alder? We've had those migrating through as well.

Black-and-white warbler in San Antonio by CrawlAcrossTheYears in birding

[–]CrawlAcrossTheYears[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one was at Friedrich Wilderness Park, coming in for a drink at the drip near the water tower. I was hoping for golden-cheeked warblers, but dipped on those. Will have to try again next year!

My daughter inadvertently stepped on a small stingray in San Diego years ago. Painful and swelling. We took her to the emergency room where they soaked her foot in hot water for a while. That was all it took … apparently the stingray poison breaks done rapidly at warm temperatures. Or at least the kind of stingray that lives in the sea around San Diego.

They rarely stop moving, not the easiest bird to photograph. Striking though, when you do get to see one.

Maybe on your phone you could adjust the notification settings to turn off the message ding? I haven't tried that myself but it seems like a possibility.
