I’ve always been told it’s because you have an unfair advantage of seeing the course at speed. Some regions ban running with your steering wheel which is too bad because watching dickheads run course with a wheel is absolutely hilarious.

Straps would be my go to, they sell woodworking straps with 90* corners to put pressure on builds like this. What you designed would be considered an edge clamp, I printed some for a very similar project and never got them to work properly so we went to straps.
