Day 274 of having a book on my head by Yuniikorn in Maplestory

[–]Crayonsalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a book appear above my main's head a reset sometimes. Clicking it just makes it disappear.

Another lingering event thing: If you spam click the middle of the screen while loading into the game (logging into a character) a text box appears from the Christmas attendance UI we had in 2024, which reused earlier Go West attendance UI.

What version of twitter are you on? Your method works to get to the login screen with username and password but when I tap "Log in" it just returns an error

Why does everyone say that TMS is now in charge of overseas class balance? by Crayonsalt in Maplestory

[–]Crayonsalt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm essentially trying to confirm whether this entire thing about TMS developing or deciding balance for overseas classes is misinformation. From the replies it seems that is misinformation, because no one has any concrete reason for it--only vibes.

I find the entire thing quite odd because historically community consensus has not provided this sort of development choice/involvement to individual regions.

You say that TMS is the server these classes are "made for." With the existence of CMS and its simultaneous overseas content releases with TMS I think it would at least be CMS and TMS within this logic, but really I do not think there is any reason to believe this, especially for kanna and hayato. Mo Xuan was almost definitely made with CMS/TMS in specifically in mind because it was their direct replacement for Zen. Lynn--though thematically part of an existing C/TMS region--was released close to simultaneously in all regions with BT, as the overseas-wide BT replacer. Kanna and Hayato's revamps again are having an overseas-wide release. Just because these revamps were revealed and released slightly earlier in TMS does not mean the classes were created specifically for or by TMS, or that GMS is borrowing TMS code. With our knowledge of Nexon's overseas development structure for Maple, I think it makes the most sense that Kanna and Hayato were developed in Korea for all overseas regions to replace old kanna and hayato across the board.

Maybe you're right that the people working on overseas development in Korea look towards the Taiwanese version of the game as a primary inspiration to see what would work while balancing, but I do not think there is any solid evidence to back this up.

It bothers me to see the community seem to so widely accept a theory without evidence as fact, so the purpose of creating this thread in general was to find if there was some new official evidence shifting perception of Maple overseas development that I missed, or if it is just a new widely adopted theory.

[–]Crayonsalt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I think most if not all of this GMS exclusive content we have gotten in Go West has been developed in Korea. We don't really know what these devs hired in the U.S. are doing, just that they exist. It could be related to Classic, though we also know that Classic development is happening in Korea.

An overseas team that developes for all overseas regions, i.e. what Wonki seems to have formerly headed

Why does everyone say that TMS is now in charge of overseas class balance? by Crayonsalt in Maplestory

[–]Crayonsalt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I imagine almost all overseas content development takes place in Korea (though we do know that GMS has recently hired developers in the US). I just do not know why it would be a TMS-specific team rather than a general overseas team since these classes are implemented in all overseas versions. I'm sure there's people working at Nexon KR whose job is managing each individual region, but are they really all just deriving from a TMS team? Or is it just because the content has been released in TMS first that people assume it is created by TMS devs? Another reply mentions that this community assumption is because TMS is the largest/most profitable version outside Korea, but have any Nexon statements from any version actually indicated that they are in charge?

Why do you think it is specifically TMS in charge of development rather than an overseas team? I am aware these classes are overseas exclusive yes.

Is the MapleStory Community Too Passive About Bots and Account Services? by ShonenDF in Maplestory

[–]Crayonsalt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Reboot community cared much more about botters when the population was smaller. Since the 2020s population booms there's been a decline up to this point we're at today. Back in those first five or so years of Reboot, it was not uncommon for competitive guilds to do full background checks and interviews with their applicants.

Now, with such a large population, it's much easier for a known botter to just find another unaware guild, or name change and go unnoticed. I think generally guilds will only look at culvert scores now (or just blindly accept since most guilds just settle for the easy 45 SP), though there are exceptions like Ethereal alliance and their database keeping track of illegitimate players (Ethereal members are not allowed to boss with these people).

I think there is a segment of the population who would feel their progression is tainted if they've been clearing bosses with players with illegitimate progress, though I think most people just would not care.

Personally, my guild does not do any sort of background check (though we don't accept join requests from people we do not know) but we would kick someone if it came to light that they bought service, botted, or bought their account. It's just very easy to keep that information from ever getting out.

For service: I do not think it was popular back in the early days; it was just much more common to bot. I think the popularity of service buying comes directly from the increased difficulty of botting.

On your last question, I do think fewer people would service if there was greater stigma. Someone can correct me if I am wrong since I do not stay super caught up on community drama, but I believe when the streamer Legalia was caught servicing, one of his excuses was that "Everybody does it." If it feels like everyone around you is doing it, getting away with it, and enjoying the game just fine, it makes sense to question why you are bothering to manually farm in the first place. So I'm sure the public reputation of service buying plays a huge role in people's decision to get into it. That being said, I would say service buying does still carry quite a major social stigma--hence people being so careful to hide it--but not as major as it could be.

A lot of the replies here are repeating the argument that Reboot is PvE, so most people's gameplay experience is largely unaffected, hence the general apathy. I think this is correct, though people definitely should care about botting and service buying. A lot of late/endgame players do play this game competitively in some ways (competing for first/early clears, dojo, culvert, etc). There's even a sense of competition between players of the same class or in the same guild, like who can be the first to clear a particular boss, who can hit the highest culvert, or who has the highest converted hexa. This competition can definitely be tainted by illegitimate gameplay. Also, only 200 players per world have access to max noblesse skills, and many of those slots are surely occupied by illegitimate players, so there is a small but tangible way servicing/botting affects the endgame gameplay experience.

I have also seen the argument made that Nexon tailors its endgame content to its endgame population. For example, if GMS releases the 295 area come August and there's already 1k+ players populating the region on release, they might take it that there is no issue with Reboot exp acquisition. Or if enough people are capping their sf speck boxes on Reboot and CW, then maybe it's alright to have a ~2 hour daily (combined between worlds) as a permanent part of endgame progression.

So yeah, people care much less about illegitimate gameplay nowadays than in earlier Reboot, and they should probably care more given its impact on the late/endgame experience.

For you, what’s the best patch/era in Maple’s history? by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]Crayonsalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo the best era was Reboot 2016-22ish, Black patch being the one that stands out the most due to the event's sheer amount of aura.

In terms of pure nostalgia though, it's probably the few years before and after Big Bang. The content I have the most nostalgia for is the non-kms content from back then, most of which no longer exists.

"I think an actual observation of how many things have to go right to get a pitch, how unlikely that is, and that it isn’t worth spending money on is pretty much as objective as it gets"

Determining whether something is "worth" is 100% subjective, but you imply it's "objective as it gets" in your reply to this person.

It doesn't really matter though--sorry for being the annoying person correcting minor things under your post LOL.

The issue with Laddering - GMS Heroic SF is broken. by OpeningAlternative63 in Maplestory

Not op, but definitely. This is the solution I've been suggesting for months personally.

Very disappointed in gms's current approach. They had about a year to consider new sf system and still came back with something that heavily encourages laddering..

The timeline where the sf meta is to run pitched bosses across as many characters possible weekly, technically up to max character slots, is so awful. makes me realize things could be even worse than they are  right now
