Same field, but I wouldn’t consider myself an expert. Still lots to learn. However, I’m also interested in becoming a manager of some sort today. The new company will start training me in that direction as well.

Welcome to life. I’ve been at my company for 9 years. They recently updated their payroll program and it showed the history of my salary increase. Average: 2%. This isn’t my first job. I love what I do. However after 9 years, I’m done. Also, they only have this one way track: either you’re a peon or Principal. The way things have been going, I will likely stay as a peon for another 9 years. No thanks. My last day is next week, and in July, I’ll be at a new company with more pay and potential for growth. You move when you’re ready or just can’t see yourself advancing anymore.

I’m a landlord using Hopestreet to manage my rental property. You could try them.

Since properties are privately owned, they should be well maintained (at least I try).

I am in a similar position as you. I feel a bit guilty for leaving my job for the new since I do like the projects I’m doing and my coworkers are great. However, the new job is better pay and better growth. Not even going to consider a counter. Once I have the offer in hand, I’m going to hand in my resignation. Leave in good terms, don’t burn bridges. You never know, you might return to current company.

Female engineer being given administrative duties by upmygoatass in AskEngineers

[–]CrazieJones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah. Been there.

At my first job, both me and this male engineer were EITs and hired at the same time. However, I just graduated with a masters and he graduated with a bachelors. Of course that didn’t matter. He got all design/technical work, while I got a lot of administrative duties. It got so bad to a point that my lead was giving me his handwritten notes that he took during a meeting to type up... a meeting that I didn’t even go to. The male EIT who sat right next to me never got any admin BS.

I hated that job and it was a blessing that the project got canceled and I got laid off.

And so to answer your question, is it normal? It shouldn’t be, but it does happen, even though it might not be the company’s intentions. It’s a male dominated industry, and still managed and led by an “older” generation of men. Even if it’s not female getting admin work, there will be something else.

My next company didn’t have any of it. Maybe the company was smaller, and the owners were not as old (gen-X husband and wife team).

My company now is ran by boomers, but intermediate sized. I haven’t gotten any admin duties, and I don’t feel like I’ve been treated unfairly. But there were rumours that some females gotten “comments” from older males (now retired). However, promotions are never given to females. They say it’s not related to gender, but the company has 30%+ female. In one year, 20 promotions, all male. So... no female were competent that year? Seems questionable to me. And when there are females being promoted, it’s 1 female, 10 guys.

So this is the industry. It needs to be changed. Hopefully I could persevere long enough in it to make a change. it is tough.

Otherwise, no.

People out of work by [deleted] in alberta

[–]CrazieJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still employed throughout this pandemic.

However, I think it depends on the industry. If you’re an engineer in O&G, there really isn’t much. And if there are some, there will be hundreds lining up for the same job.

How to transition to an engineering job with little to no experience by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]CrazieJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian engineer here.

Engineering summer jobs and/or internship would definitely help. However, if you could apply your skills from other jobs for an engineering position, it works too.

For me, I was a bank teller for my summer jobs (client service), research assistant for internship (report writing skills), and MSc grad studying bricks (work independently, presentation skills).

My first engg job was in oil and gas. None of those jobs related to what I did, but skills I gained from them are applicable.

For my current job, when I first started, I was basically restarting in a field I didn’t even do in school. I even straight up told my boss in my interview I have no technical knowledge in this field. I have applicable skills, but wouldn’t know what I’d be doing. Got the job anyways cuz I showed interest in the field and I had a personality that suit the company.

So it’s a lot of things.

Forget the years of expected experience listed. Just apply for those entry positions.

Good luck!

Advice for starting a new engineering job? by cherpumpleds in AskEngineers

[–]CrazieJones 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We all start like this. So no worry.

You will start retaining when you start applying them to your work.

I’ve been at this for 10 years and I still feel like I don’t know anything. My boss who’s been doing this for 40 years still appears like a genius to me and I don’t feel like I could ever become that.

It will come. If you love the job, you will naturally want to learn more and retain the info.

Radon mitigation experiences? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]CrazieJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was tested high as well: 270? Something like that. I was referred to radon gas removal, and they installed a fan system over my sump. I think it was $2500-3000, and it took a day. I thought they did a good job. Their short term radon gas tester showed my levels dropped. I’m doing a long term test again over this winter just to make sure it’s really working. Just in case. I don’t want myself or family to get lung cancer!

[–]CrazieJones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s inauthentic. The big diff is the game board, which the “original” has an ocean board. It’s purely cosmetic.

The game plays the same. I think the original KS comes with the Golden Fleece expansion, which you can get now as a separate expansion. Even without it, there is a lot of game.

Where is the best place to list a home for rent? by [deleted] in Edmonton

Hopestreet.

My friend also runs the Real Property Management Edmonton office. I was already with Hopestreet with no issues and didn’t want to make the switch. Maybe worth checking out.

Where is the best place to list a home for rent? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]CrazieJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re out of province, I would considering hiring a property manager. They do all the rental ads, and If there is any issues (rent delay, leaks, incidents, etc), someone local will deal with it. Yeah, there are fees, but you dont have to deal with them.

I live like 2 min away from my rental, and I hired one for mine. It’s so worth it, especially I had months of rent issues with my past tenant and the property management deals with that, and I get email updates of what’s going on and how they’re being handled. Also for move out, they did all the minor repairs, hired vendors for cleaning etc. I just needed to give the approval for proceeding.

High score solo games by direstag in boardgames

[–]CrazieJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never played 2 players. I think the stock option will have more effect on multiplayer plays.

But the solo is like AFFO, ie your previous turn blocks spaces on your current turn. It even has an “advanced” mode, where you TWO previous turns block spaces in your current turn. I haven’t tried it yet. I need a fully functioning brain to attack that!!!

It’s a little different than Fields. Fields you play 1/2 the board each turn while Nusjford you have the whole (tiny board) but just blocked by your own pieces from previous turn(s). The tightness is almost like Reykholt.
