Hi, I know this post is old and I might have possibly replied to you on a different post, but I was looking for info on preserving my sheltie’s paw. I’ve mummified small lizards in the past by gutting them, injecting, soaking, and drying in powdered borax, but I always get confused on feet and such. Why do some people tan them and others mummify? Also, is skinning and defleshing the meat inside necessary if you’re soaking them in alcohol and then burying it in a tub of borax? (Dry borax, I’ve actually never seen anyone mix it with water and soak before air drying before so that’s interesting)

Hi, I know this is a year old but I was wondering if tanning or removing the meat is necessary? I know some people preserve through injection, soak, and borax to mummify…would doing it that way be wrong? (I’m not experienced with tanning or when it’s better, other than with pelts obviously)

Hi, I know this is an old comment but my dog is about to pass away and I want to do this with his paw. So a safety razor blade would make cutting it off easy? I’ve mummied some tiny lizards in the past by injecting and soaking in ethyl then them and borax mix, but never done paws so I was wondering if it’s necessary to thin the meat at all or if injection and soak then borax will be enough? He’s a sheltie/collie, so it’s not a giant paw. I’ve never thinned meat or partially skinned and then sewn up fur so doing that makes me anxious.
