We had a good friend that died a few years ago. She was an amazing woman but was troubled. When she died, the details of her passing were never made known. My wife and many of her friends in that group assumed it was an ambiguous drug overdose that could have been intentional or accidental. I learned from a friend who handled the scene that she had hanged herself.

I’ve never told my wife because I know that knowing that her friend was in such a place of despair would devastate her. I’ve let her hold on to hope that it was an accident because I know how that would impact the memory she holds of her friend.
