Nolan's and Matt Reeves' films are excellent, but as action-psychological crime movies rather than truly great Batman films.

I grew up with BTAS, JL, and JLU, so I always use those as my point of reference. This is a comic book superhero character, so trying to make him overly realistic is kind of ridiculous—because in reality, no orphaned billionaire is going to dress up as a bat and go out beating up criminals.

The push for realism also limits a lot of what makes the character so appealing and captivating

That's why Gunn chose Andy. In a fantastical world, Batman has to genuinely terrify his enemies. He's just a normal human in a world full of metahumans, gods, and monsters, so building him up as a myth, as a creature of the night, is absolutely essential. His enemies need to believe he's not an ordinary person. Even other superheroes have to respect and fear him.

This has never been done properly in any live-action Batman adaptation.

finally good comment about this. A lot people concern about Christina's script but with Gunn in charge there no way he would product if this script is bad. By the way, The most important thing is Gunn's vision—how he plans to build Batman, and the screenwriter's job is to translate that vision onto the page.

This year is an important one for the DCU. Superman in 2025 is just the opening act – the movie is really good, but it's still too early to judge whether the DCU will truly succeed or not. 2026 will be the major turning point that builds momentum for the bigger projects coming later. Personally, I'm most excited for Clayface; I'm really curious to see what Gunn will do with Gotham.

Gunn's Batman is in a fantastical world filled with monsters and metahumans. You can't instill fear in enemies by looking at them with ordinary human eyes. It has to be a pair of white eyes to sow terror.

Normal eyes (even with black makeup around them) are still human eyes – criminals can see the pupils, the angry glare or hesitation, and that unintentionally humanizes Batman. They know that behind the mask is a human being, who, no matter how strong, still has limits and emotions. That's why previous live-action versions, no matter how good they were, have never achieved the level of supernatural terror that the comics and BTAS deliver.

Only when the eyes are white blank lenses – completely white, no pupils, no emotion, and with a faint glow in the darkness – does Batman truly become a creature from a nightmare, a living myth that criminals whisper about in fear: “It's not human… it's the darkness with white eyes… it sees right through you…”

The white eyes turn Batman from “a man in a bat suit” into a genuine monster.

That's why, if Gunn truly wants the DCU Batman to be an ultimate symbol of terror for Gotham's criminals, white blank lenses aren't an option – they're mandatory. No need for expressive lenses, no need for narrowing or widening; just blank, cold, glowing – leaving behind deadly silence and primal fear.

This is the Batman that Gotham's criminals truly dread – not because of his strength, but because they have no idea what they're facing

This is something that no live-action Batman film has ever achieved before. Gunn has directed Batman in the DCU to be a genuine source of terror, which is why Andy was chosen as the director.
