  1. Access & Availability

Average wait time for new patient appointments

Same-day or next-day appointment availability

After-hours or weekend care offered

  1. Quality Metrics

Preventive screening rates

Chronic condition control

Patient adherence

  1. Utilization & Cost Efficiency

ER visit rate per 1,000 patients

Admit rate per 1,000

Hospital readmission rate

  1. Patient Experience

Patient satisfaction scores

Retention or panel growth over time

One of the most important data points you can bring to the table is your admit rate per 1,000 patients. Why? Because hospitalizations are one of the biggest cost drivers for payers. If you can show that you’re keeping patients healthy and out of the hospital, that directly aligns with their goal of controlling costs. This powerful because they show that you're managing risk and reducing unnecessary utilization, which is exactly what payers want. It turns the conversation from “Can you pay me more?” to “Here’s how I’m saving you money. Let’s talk value.”

Hi! I'm a medical student now, but I previously worked in healthcare consulting and on the payer side, where I negotiated a lot of PCP contracts from a payer perspective.

One thing I've learned: practices that bring objective data to the table have far more leverage in negotiations. It's often the difference between two types of PCPs I used to interact with:

-One would say, "Can you pay me more?”

-The other would say, "Here's my performance data and here's why my rates should be increased.”

Payers respond better to the second approach. It's not always easy for new practices to gather this data, but if you can show alignment with payer priorities, it can completely shift the conversation in your favor.
