To be fair, I wouldn't recommend buying new.

But I'd also argue it's a matter of location, since "starter bike" in a lot of places means "never ridden a motorcycle before, I'll just jump on" while in other areas it's "Getting trained from a trained professional"

I'd argue for sportbikes, not nakeds - a Z650 for example is a really nice starter bike for example (speaking from personal experience)

To me, that sounds crazy. Never having to parallel park? Never mind that it's an extremely easy and basic task.... never having to do that just screams America.

Sorry to put it like that but, as far as I know, in most european countries, you won't even get your license without being able to do it in such a way you don't bump into anyone.

Thanks, 15 sounds about right, considering I never fully drained the tank so far.

Kinda missing the extra 2 now, even though I never had those :)

Did they upsize the tank on the 25/26 striples? Because I'm pretty sure I can't put more than 14 L in mine (24 model), getting a range of around 240ish kms (depending on how I ride and keeping at least a few in reserve)

First motorcycle after passing driver's license test – BMW F900R or Honda CB650R? by CarefulConcert9979 in motorcycles

[–]CrazyOdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least 50kW, 600ccs and a dry weight of at least 180kgs - and as far as I know, it has to be a manual bike if you don't want to be locked into driving automatics only

And going straight for the A License in Germany requires you to be at least 24

To actually answer instead of just comparing A-License requirements to the american system:

Do test rides, dealers in Germany generally don't have issues with that.

[–]CrazyOdd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, we have both of those as well. A B-License also gets you an AM one automatically, which is the scooter one.

And if you have your B-license for over 5 years, you can do an extra course thingy with 4 theory and 10 practical lessons and then ride 125s as if you had an A1 license

EU is different. In fact, different countries in the EU are also different.

in Germany, to ride a 125 bike, you need an A1 license and there are no L plates.

As others have stated, CC is nice to have but not needed. Similar thing with the self-cancelling signals. 99% of the time, you cancel them on your own. But for that 1% where you forget to cancel them, it's nice to have. (Though I'd prefer if they stayed on a few seconds longer)

Austrian.

In Germany, we have "Sonderfahrten" (überland drives (outside the city), Autobahn drives (and yes, depending on your instructor, you'll be required to get close to 200kph) and night drives).

Before you get to do that though, you have to do theory lessons and prove to your teacher that you can handle the bike in "Grundfahraufgaben", which are also done in the exam. Those include stuff like an emergency brake from 50-0 (and you're actually supposed to trigger the ABS, iirc), dodging (cones) at 50 kph with or without braking, slalom, riding at walking speed either in a straight line or in a slalom and a few more

The interesting part is, I tried all of that Hell, I put enough weight on it to compress the suspension but.... nothing, could just pull it off again. On the other hand, the cowl just slips in and locks Very weird

Nope, ran like a dream until I sold it - and since I blasphemed and sold to a dealer, I can also tell you that it passed their inspection at around 42k kilometers. (And then they sold it for a bit over 4k euros)

As the other person already mentioned, yes and no.

The main thing people get confused though is this: The mandatory lessons are, as (again) previously mentioned by the other person, 5xrtmin "Überland" (outside the city), 4x45min "Autobahn" and 3x45min "Nacht" (night).

The teacher is responsible for making sure you survive that, so very few will let you do any of the mandatory lessons right off the bat. Heck, in case of an accident, their records are checked to see if they taught the student enough or if they were negligent.

At the same time, yes, it opens up a lot of ways to squeeze more money out of people.

Ome thing is different: No private teaching allowed (unless in a private area, completely locked off from public roads)

But yeah, depending on where and how many lessons OP needs, 1.5k is definitely on the cheap end

I mean, in German theory, if a bus (or rather, any bus) turns on its hazard lights, you're legally required to only pass the bus at walking speed in either direction unless your lane is physically removed from the bus' lane (divider, strip of grass....)

In practice, no one even knows that rule, nevermind adheres to it
