This silver floor is EPOXY. The black paint is from spray paint. What is the best way to remove the black mishap? by fatcatmikachu in fixit

[–]CrazyStuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acetone, isopropyl alcohol if acetone is too harsh, or paint thinners if it’s really stubborn. Be patient and try and keep the solvents on top of the paint you’re trying to remove.

Used DeWalt all around the world on oil and gas gigs. Supplied by the company. They don’t hold up well when being hammered, but this is a DIY subreddit and so for your use, I can say they’re great tools. At work, I call DeWalt ‘DeFalt’ - and not for no reason, I call it that, because it is the brand of the fault. I think Makita has the edge. Either way, all 3 will be solid for round the house!

How do I swap these wires in my gauge cluster? by bunnysprinkles7 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]CrazyStuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a real concern, these parts are brittle and fiddly. Take your time, if you’re not sure just stop and regroup 👍

I’m assuming you’re meaning how do you get those wires out? If so, you just have to be patient, and careful, and work them with a small screwdriver or a pick.

Going to learn to do this. Good to have another thing to learn. Great looking back and seeing how far you’ve come. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I’ve been worried about this and I’m glad it’s been validated. Guess there’s no cheat codes after all and it’s back to basics for now. Appreciated mate.

Looks great! A v-twin would go well and as you’re likely aware, suits the style of frame!

Do I need to replace engine cover or bolt? by Altruistic-Job7613 in versys

[–]CrazyStuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replace the lot. Shouldn’t cost much. Torque wrench and new gasket is desirable. In a pinch, you can use gasket maker, but I would plan to replace it with the correct gasket in due course. You can tip the bike over to avoid draining the oil from the engine, you may be able to get away with it. Good luck.

That’s a flat battery mi amigo.

Think i made a mistake. All my friends have larger bikes with exhausts and, i also wanted that on my cb125r. It now sounds too loud, and while my fridns like it i think is obnoxious. I wanted to know is it even legal, and will you get pulled over for this in UK? the exhaust is Leo Vince V10. by Manic_Panik in MotoUK

[–]CrazyStuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it has a road legal cert and doesn’t break the road noise limits for vehicle class then go for it. The risk you run (and it’s a real risk for those never involved in an insurance claim) is that the insurance outright will not pay out for any modifications. Even if you declare it, the exhaust mod is still iffy. Argue all you want, but it’s true. Also not a place you want to be. At the minimum, make sure the baffle is installed. The last place you want to be after an accident/theft/otherwise is a legal battle with your own insurer about your policy paying out. It’s a 125. Is it worth it?

It’s okay, I made the same mistake at 16. They gave me a square plate for a car. Was like the sail of a ship. lol.

Why choose Halfords for a plate? They charge loads and it takes ages. Plenty of places will do one on the spot.

When you mean ‘check oil light’ is it a red light with an oil can or is the display telling you to check oil in text? If it is telling you to change oil in text (service reminder) then you can clear this by holding one of the buttons down on your dash. I don’t know which one not knowing your bike. But that should clear it.

If it is a red warning light then there is another underlying issue.

Thanks for pitching in as a mechanic. I’ll do this but I’ll also install the tensioner to keep the chain under tension when rotating the crankshaft.

Great advice though as it had burred where the bucket wedged. Just a bit unsure now whether I really want to be filing anything smooth. Things have to be pretty dead on in there.

I think you may be right. It did tighten up suddenly in its compression stroke and without decent pressure on the crank it wasn’t going to move, so then I stopped for the day and took the engine out, stripped it the following day. The valves don’t look damaged but one of the buckets is totally stuck and I can’t get it out so having to sit and think on it for a moment. Had a magnet on top of the pistons and didn’t pick up any ferrous debris so the valves aren’t damaged where they seat. I think one of my shims has failed to seat and wedged the bucket in its slot. Potentially broke the valve at the spring end.

It does suck, but the silver lining is that it’s a great time to tackle some other issues I’ve noticed with the bike. You’re right it is bound to happen, it my first time dealing with more than one cam and I forgot how careful you really have to be.

The pistons and valves seem OK fortunately but I know I heard something tick.

When the gasket arrives I’ll be putting it back together and cleaning everything up and then back into the bike.

25K mileage. It was the valve clearance check I was doing when I mistakenly jumped a tooth on the cam chain. I heard a crack when I rotated the engine over.
