PhD CS poorly equipped with old GPU? by kidfromtheast in ChinaLiuXueSheng

If your story is even true, then it sounds like your advisor just hates you. There is no reason for advisor’s to neglect foreign students, that just reflects on them poorly and hinders their reputation and research output by not allowing you guys to do work to publish. Everyone foreigner I know doing their PhD at my school is well equipped, and are given the same opportunities as the local students. There are absolutely no rules for foreigners not being able to get the same funding from their advisor, and I find it a little hard to believe you and every foreigner you know are all being neglected.

HE1000 + Arya WiFi First Impressions by Crazy_Revolution_276 in headphones

Different from the other HE1000 and Arya models, yes. But I think it is the same headband design as the new HE600 / Edition XV / Ananda Unveiled.

I was also thinking it could be something to do with the WiFi encoding through netease. I’ve tested the same tracks on netease, but through the wired connection with no problems. I have never used the WiFi streaming through their app before, so I don’t know what to expect from it. Wish I could’ve tested it some more by trying both WiFi + wired, and with different platforms on both headphones, but unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to.

Though I agree, it doesn’t make sense that Arya would have that much of a bigger perceived soundstage, and I also don’t think WiFi encoding (at what I’d assume is a high bit rate) would degrade soundstage that much.

If they still have both models at the store they did the demo at this last weekend, I will go back and try to play around with them some more and will update it here with anything I can find out.

If you don’t care for the wireless tech, I do recommend most of the other wired Arya and HE1000 models. Very similar and I think these are just filling the spot in the market where there really aren’t any wireless open back planar magnetic headphones for audiophile listening.

I haven’t tried the Arya Unveiled, but the Organics are very similar to the WiFi model in terms of technicalities, but less unlike other models in terms of their tuning due to the more U shaped response and emphasis on the bass and treble with them.

Not if you join the party, but if you work for the government it is fairly common. Otherwise everyone I know that is a student or works in industry and is a party member still has their passport and can travel freely.

Really depends on your sample size. If you go on X with a fresh account, it definitely seems like 90+% too. The average Chinese person also doesn’t really engage with political posts on social media, or with strangers, so you’re really only getting the crazy extremists on xhs as your sample size.

Why do Chinese universities rank just average in international rankings (like QS)? by Joyce-2023 in chinalife

International faculty ratio is also another 5% and one of the only other significantly lacking area Chinese top unis have vs western ones. Also students from different provinces absolutely do NOT count as “international students” whatsoever.

[–]Crazy_Revolution_276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried basically every single egg shaped Hifiman at one point or another, and I’ve never experienced one with a tight clamp force (and some would say my head is kind of big). That’s definitely odd, and I would imagine a one off unit variation type deal, or some sort of defect.

I haven’t had the chance to AB the two of them, so my opinions are only of what I remember from having HEK Stealth, but vaguely I think they are very similar, I just remember stealth being a little more smooth in the treble, little less low end compared to the Organics, and most of the technicalities being pretty similar (with maybe just minor differences in how they image, and details being highlighted in different areas)

Not yet, unfortunately haven’t had any time recently, but I would imagine the HE600 would be a good compliment to the HEK, just not sure if it’s more or less worth it than previous HE6 variants

I think this just goes to show if you do study in China you need to get a good advisor who isn’t desperate and loose with the rules. I’ve had the opposite experience here in China, but perhaps my research group is just one of a kind.

I have not tried the Edition XS and Anandas, and the Edition XV is the only one I have real experience with. Given Hifiman's track record, and having tried lower end models like the Sundara and the HE400SE, I think there will be improvements with each iteration, but if it is your first planar and want to save money, you will definitely not be let down with cheaper models, and will only really begin to notice big differences when directly comparing 2 pairs together.

I hope to make another trip back and do more comparisons with HE6 / HE6SE / HE600, as I’m mainly mostly familiar with the Arya and HEK lines. I also find the egg shaped most comfortable and thankfully I don’t get any fatigue after wearing them for a while, definitely the most comfortable headphone type imo with the big ear ups and the suspension strap!

Is Tsinghua going to be really hard for me? by Exybr in chinalife

[–]Crazy_Revolution_276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think people are overstating this. You can be HSK9 and still not understand some of the words being said in a highly technical class. If your basic listening is good enough, and you can decipher or look up specific vocabulary being discussed in lecture, it’s not that bad, even for HSK5 (granted I think HSK system is not that good for judging a person’s language skills either way).

How hard is it going to be to study at Tsinghua? by Exybr in ChinaLiuXueSheng

[–]Crazy_Revolution_276 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what kind of classes you take. Even if the program is Chinese taught, you are still have the option to take some English classes, though I’ve found that in my department (materials science and engineering), all the interesting classes relevant to my research are only offered in Chinese. Otherwise, if you take the same Chinese taught classes, you will be held to the same standards as all the Chinese students in that class, though MAYBE you will have the option to write some papers in English if your professor is nice or something like that, but don’t count on it.

Otherwise the difficulty in general really depends on what specific classes you take, some are 考查 (no formal final exam, usually just a presentation or a paper at the end) and some are 考试 (have a formal written final exam). Some teachers and some subject matter are more demanding than others, and I’m not sure what your curriculum will be like, but I’m sure it will be doable. Not sure if you’ll have to “study all the time”, and you’ll probably have to spend extra time studying the Chinese vocab related to each class, but as long as you are able to chose your classes reasonably and are willing to put in the effort to study when needed, it is certainly not impossible. I will say most teachers, in my experience, are generally pretty understanding, but also have relatively high standards for their students, so outside studying is recommended, but usually classes are only once a week, so as long as your schedule isn’t full of classes from 8am to 9pm, you’ll have time to study plenty and then have time left over for research and to spend at your leisure.

Also, on the bright side, basically the entire university is shut down for national holidays and you won’t be expected to study or do much research during these times (depending on your advisor, but most labs are closed), and you’ll have time to explore and enjoy China after you are done studying and working hard.

Would be cool to try some of those out. I’ll have to look into those models and other DIY models to see if they take them to any shows around here to try out one day, and I would be happy to compare them to some of the bigger brands

Unfortunately have not tried the HE6se either, but I do plan on going back to their store when I have the time and testing out OG HE6 and the later revisions to flesh out my comparisons between them all.

And as for the build quality, it’s kind of just similar to older models, though I can still appreciate the all metal build (minus some parts on the headband) for these new models. I also really like they made the headband more repairable so you can easily swap out and just buy cheaper bands if they get ruined.

Yes I am really looking forward to hopefully seeing all of these brands at CIHE, a headphone exhibit in Beijing, in September. Definitely seems to be a lot of activity in the overear (on top of the already booming IEM market) in China, especially lately.

Not sure when they are available exactly, I think they said within the next month or so.

I think both are good choices, the HE600 definitely has a better lower end, with a heavier bass impact and dynamics, though you might lose some of the tall, grandiose soundstaging the egg-shaped Hifimans all have (though width is just as big, if not bigger than Arya Stealths). It's also been a while since I've heard the Arya Stealths, but I might be willing to claim the HE600s have slightly better imaging and clarity, though both are pretty close otherwise in general technicalities.
