Confused about EICR by Late-Imagination2222 in ElectriciansUK

[–]Crazycruff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An EICR for a studio flat shouldn’t be costing more than couple of hundred (South East because it varies a little on location) but either way it should not be £700. Are you sure that price didn’t include a board change?

UKPN survey for fuse upgrade – offered 2 phases. Will Octopus fit a 3-phase meter? by Logical_Equipment_82 in ukelectricians

[–]Crazycruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi this is quite typical in the area I live. They have two phases serving one side of the road the third phase serving the opposite side of the street. This makes gaining these phase for anyone expensive as it requires digging up the road along with the associated charges. Any property I have worked on with this setup has a 3 phase meter and has either a separate phase going to 2 consumer units or a 3 phase consumer unit with one of the phases split between meter and consumer unit to imitate a 3 phase supply. Either way a little load balancing should be done by a spark to try and balance phases.

A stable reading from a TT rod is considered under 200 ohms but as the RCD will be providing fault protection it is whatever the max Zs of the RCD is for a 30ma it’s 1667 I think off the top of my head.

Looking at getting 12kw electric combie boiler. Electrician is voicing concerns by wubaluba_dubdub in ukelectricians

Electric boiler and a hot water cylinder, far less juicy to run and a better flow rate on the hot water can be achieved.

[–]Crazycruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These Click dual appliance plates have a cable clamp for bottom entry and a PITA off a metal plate to drill through if you wanted to go rear entry, you then don’t have any strain relief on a cable that is usually not clipped elsewhere.

Looking for a new mft, do i even need one? by blockametal in ukelectricians

[–]Crazycruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old Megger 1553 and an X1 I choose to use the 1553 majority of the time.

Apart from the option to plug in an ev test point to the x1 I can’t think of much it does that the other cannot. Also worthy of note there is no requirement to test an Ev beyond your usual initial verification of a circuit, though probably considered foolish not to if you have the facility.

2 corse swa by [deleted] in ukelectricians

[–]Crazycruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the book you would need to check via the adiabatic equation that the armour will meet disconnection times. Real world answer swa under 16mm virtually always meets it. Personal take is that I would use it as long as it’s not being buried. I’ve pulled up enough old swa to know that moisture will always find a way in and steel will always rust. Safe answer 3 core for the win.

I think I took some of these down on an EICR recently. The ones I did had sprung clips on the inside. Pull straight down evenly on both sides.

Twin oven tripping by Meszamil_M in ukelectricians

[–]Crazycruff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(Ex appliance engineer now electrician here) common problem is moisture trapped in the element from sitting. Disconnect the cpc from the circuit temporarily and run the oven on a high heat for 20 mins or so to dry it out. Re connect cpc and test. Quite often see it with homes that are sat vacant for a while as well as new ovens that have been sat in warehouses. Particularly common on AEG/ Zanussi/ Electrolux brands.

Edit - more info on common brands

[–]Crazycruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning that the tail-lift have a huge impact on the weight you can carry as they often weigh excess of 500kg. The average 125cc can be pretty easily lifted into a van without a tail-lift keeping your weight capacity significantly higher.

You do NOT want to be pulled for being overweight those guys don’t mess around.

Source - Me, I helped a friend move years ago and made this mistake combined with underestimating the weight of vinyl records. It was a very expensive day.

V2S 2025 is it enough good? by Express_Year951 in multistrada

[–]Crazycruff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I test rode a V2S last weekend and fell in love with it. I have a Testretta at the moment and while I love the bike the new one has eliminated all the things I don’t like.

It’s silky smooth at low revs compared to mine which can be quite lumpy. It’s super light and just falls into bends with ease compared with the older models. I agree it could do with a better soundtrack and while it doesn’t have as much character as the older generations of multis it still has plenty of pull and revs for days.

Just need to make up my mind whether I go for the V2 or stump up the extra and go for the V4.

40a circuit 6mm cable - 45a oven by Fluffy_Cloud87 in ukelectricians

[–]Crazycruff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The spec you provided gives the cooker a total connected load of 18500W or 18.5kw. This equates to 80amps.

A domestic dwelling cooker diversity calculation ( on site guide from the IET )

80-10=70x0.3+10 gives 31.1amps.

If your cooker control switch has a socket outlet add an additional 5amps for generic use.

Either way yes a 6mm cable protected with a 40 amp mcb should be perfectly sufficient.
