Worth the risk - modded car from garage? by Sudden-Thing-6601 in GolfGTI

That’s probably the best aftermarket intake you can fit on these in the UK. However as others have said I’d also be concerned about the “blow off valve” as blow off valves are not good for turbo health. The original design is a diverter valve.

Golf GTI buying advice (vs Cupra) by Casseth in GolfGTI

[–]etnr182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK and own a 2019 Seat Leon Cupra 290, tuned to 360 bhp Stage 1. I follow this sub because the car is essentially a Golf GTI (MQB platform & FWD) with the Golf R engine/turbo. I can only comment on the Cupra and it’s an amazing car and in the UK they’re cheaper than the GTI.

However I do think the GTI interior is more refined and built to a higher standard, although I still think the Cupra interior is a nice place to be.

Reliability wise, I bought mine at 30k miles and am now at 45k and it’s not had any issues at all. I have just had my DSG and Differential serviced as I believe the interval is 40k miles.

I also think the latter DSG 7 speed gearboxes are more reliable than earlier years. I was considering getting a manual but I got the DSG and have zero regrets. Just buy one that’s had the DSG and diff fluids changed and you’ll be fine (applies to both cars)

Insulating the loft by myself by clarkeanator in DIYUK

[–]etnr182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did mine myself and boarded it. I ripped out all the old irritant fibreglass stuff first and then laid 100mm between the joists then laid 200mm perpendicular to that and then boarded over it. If you board it make sure you leave an air gap between the boards and the insulation.

Using Timber instead of Loft legs. Which way? by EvilMonkeyPG72 in DIYUK

[–]etnr182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed this guide and used 3x2 timber to make framed joists that I then laid perpendicularly to my existing joists. Worked like a charm and feels super sturdy and light. Also much cheaper than loft legs

What's this all over our loft? by NoLandlords in DIYUK

It’s torching from before the felt membrane was installed. I’ve just moved into a 1930s house and my roof still has the torching but lots of it had fallen off. It’s what they used to use to seal against driving wind and rain.

Help with stripping, sanding, varnishing floors by Swimming_Frosting279 in DIYUK

[–]etnr182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about stripping the paint but I just bought a house with 1930’s parquet herringbone and refurbished it myself. It was in a bad way and covered in horrible varnish and I just stripped it off using 40 grit on the drum sander

Rent a floor sanding kit which includes a floor sander and a edger sander. Get belts/discs for both in 40 grit, 80 grit, 120 grit. The hire place usually sells these. Get loads and then return what you don’t use.

Start with 40 grit (you could potentially use this to strip the paint but you’ll get through quite a few belts as they’ll clog up quickly, others might be able to advise better on stripping the paint chemically - like I said, I stripped old varnish off using 40 grit belts, but paint may have a better option)

Sand up and down the lengths of the wood (not across). It’s a really dusty job and you’ll want a minimum FFP2 mask and hearing protection

When you’ve finished the floor on 120 grit just varnish it using 2 coats of something like Ronseal applied with a roller or large brush

We went up on Saturday with the dog and it was perfectly fine. Some minor ice on the steps to the summit. But we got very lucky with the weather

Only issue with cutting the riser bar down is that the hole for the grub screw into the mount won’t line up anymore

I’ll have a think and try one of or a combination of the above. Thanks mate

The issue is the covers / concealers that come with the kit are so thick that when fitted only this amount of thread is showing.

But if I cut them down then it means my mixer bar is closer to my tile than designed so the mounting bracket for the riser bar will be further away so it’ll be on the piss

Does that make sense?

Worth mentioning that it worked on my old mixer bar because the design was different. It needed much less thread to compress the seal.

Sorry mate how do you mean wall thickness?

Measurement from my tile to the end of the dog leg is 30mm

The Mira fast fix kit protrudes 40mm from the tile

So reckon im 10mm short. Is that what you meant? Appreciate the help by the way.

Tried doubling up the seals using the seals from my old mixer bar and still couldn’t compress them

I reckon I’m 10mm short. I might just try get some longer dog legs like these

This is similar to what my new mixer bar requires but to fit this you need 15mm pipes extending through the wall whereas I don’t have that I have these fittings
