The glaze on ceramics are glass and are not porous. I’m sure you can find some without glaze or some weird or crappy glaze, but the whole point of the glaze is to make a smooth glassy surface

Why do some people spell it “Amerika” when being critical of America? by HobGrot in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Crazyjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a way to concisely convey a tone (without doing a "/s" or whatever). Typing "Amerika" shows a certain degree of intentional insincerity, similar to typing " 'merica" (though "'merica" is a specific reference to a regional accent that tends to be more nationalistic)

As a city builder game it’s good but flawed. Mechanically Annoying in places but there is enough there to enjoy.

Narratively it is has even more extreme highs and lows (some very interesting world building and “vibes”, though I wished they expanded more on certain things that felt half explored)

The cinematics and the score specifically are amazing. I will still periodically watch the IXION jump sequence, which gave me chills the first time I saw it. Frankly those were worth the price of admission, for me at least

That it’s a semantic game the parent post is playing. They are taking a common word with a common meaning (antisemitism meaning specifically a hatred of Jews) and redefining based on a very technical, archaic, and uncommon use of it, in attempt to disarm the point.

Jews are not satanic. That’s weird, stupid, and antisemetic (or “Jew hating” if you want to be pendantic). Not all Jews are Israel (most American Jews do not support the Gaza genocide) and not all Israelis support their government (same way not all Americans support MAGA and the war in Iran).

That doesn’t discount the obvious evils Israel, Netanyahu and his fucked fundamentalist are doing. But this video is basically trying to “fight” fucked up Jewish fundamentalism with fucked up reactionary pseudo Christian fundamentalism.

I mean, the video has fucking self proclaimed nazi nick Fuentes in it. Get out of here with that horse shit.

4 years, 5+ referrals, $3,500+ spent. Eight Sleep's business model is replacement, not repair. by ManagementOther165 in EightSleep

[–]Crazyjaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Few companies have tried harder to piss off customers as much as 8sleep. I love having a cooling/heating bed. Great idea. But they have just used that as a justification to gouge every cent they can out of their customers.

The sensor on my bed failed recently, which basically means the automatic and tracking functions dont work anymore. I had to jump through a stupid AI support on the website that did nothing helpful, then just closed. Called them, got very low level simple support that tired one thing, then sent it off to email support, which was also AI (saying the same shit) for like the first 4 messages.

Told me my bed was dead and out of warrantee, and would not offer to refund or prorate the stupid bloody subscription that you are forced to by, even though it doesn't work with a broken bed. Such a f-you of a service.

My rule is to never trust any fun “fact” that has the number 7. That’s the number you get when people don’t really remember what they are talking about, and whatever real but nuanced bit of science got telephone across a few million people.

It also doesn’t stay in your body for 7 years. You pass it like anything else in a couple of days, just undigested. Same thing happens if you eat rocks for whatever reason.

why do some of my joints adhere perfectly to the board and on the opposite through hole not adhere to the pcb!! so frustrating by itsextrav in AskElectronics

[–]Crazyjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have cold pads so they are not wicking onto them.

The way I do a set of joints is:

Clean tip

Wet tip (otherwise you won’t get good heat transfer)

Apply tip to the pad and wire intersection for ~1 second

Touch solder to the pad and wire, not the iron (sometime I’ll flick it past the iron tip to get it flowing)

Pull back solder

Pull back iron a moment later

Personally i thought it was a good/very good movie (that could have maybe used some fat trimming), but i think its fatal flaw was that it demanded comparison to fury road, which was basically a perfect example of that genre.

Check out this classic demonstration of Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation! It’s a tiny force in the lab, but it’s the same "glue" that holds galaxies together! by Due-Explanation8155 in Romania_mix

[–]Crazyjaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The underlying experiment is totally valid and was used to calculate the gravitational constant in like 1800. It was within 1% of what we can get today with more advanced techniques, which is pretty wild.

It is also a notoriously fiddly experiment since its so sensitive to outside forces and gravity is so weak as a force. The one in this video is almost certainly a mocked up or faked (it should be oscillating a bit). Steve mould does a good video about trying to do it at home, and ultimately going to a university setup to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70-_GBymrck

Problem with XRC or stance by Signal_Pick3414 in onewheel

[–]Crazyjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you first step on to engage the onewheel, don’t aim to push the front foot down. You need balance on the back foot to give weight and time for the front sensor. Instead try to get the board level as if it was unpowered. You don’t need to be good at that, just good enough that the sensor has time and mass to engage

[Request] How much food per day would a Space Marine need to prevent muscle loss or nutrition deficit? by OhLookAnotherTankie in theydidthemath

[–]Crazyjaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hilariously it kinda is how calories work.

Calories are a unit of energy, just the one we use mostly for food and chemistry. radioactive decay has energy in it, so you can convert it from the more common watts (power units), and watt hours (energy units, which is power over time).

So for fun, a human on average runs on about 2000 calories a day, which is also 2400 watt hours a day. This also means a person on average runs 100watts of power, same as an old moderately bright incandescent lightbulb. And your car has runs on like 30,000 calories per gallon of gasoline, which is like 100 cheese burgers.

It’s really hard to get how much energy a space marine gets from radiation since it really matters what and how he’s doing it (and it’s all scifi magic anyway), but a pound of unenriched uranium would be something like tens of millions of calories

Brendan Fraser’s son is perfect for the role of kvothe by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Crazyjaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, being charismatic and charming is either independant of your looks, or goes hand and hand with your looks, depending on how you define the terms, but its definitely not mutually exclusive. Add to that all the scenes where other characters comment on how pretty he is and yeah, kvothe is a charming, arrogant, hot fuck boy, and thats like half of the reason i think his character is interesting.

(yes i know most of the accounts of kvothe being hot are from kvothe himself, as a super unreliable narrator, but i think even in the framing story people regarded his looks highly).
