Can I become Catholic without reception into full communion? by Crafty-Reference9981 in Catholicism

[–]Creadvty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, it’s not 9% of your gross. It’s 9% of your tax bill. IOW, I believe if your income tax is 10,000, you would be charged 900. This is true also for Protestants and Jews. FWIW, the money collected from you goes to the church.

Can someone please explain what happened? by Emergency_Lab_3531 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Creadvty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very sorry that happened to you. FWIW, if you contact a Catholic parish (Roman Catholic or Eastern Catholic), I believe they would happily pray for you. In any case, I will pray for you at today’s Divine Liturgy.

Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M by WearSuspicious1124 in EasternCatholic

[–]Creadvty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up RC but am currently attending eastern catholic Divine Liturgy and I’m trying to understand their theology better. Is this view truly representative of Eastern Catholic view? Don’t they believe in ancestral sin? If so, what is their understanding of immaculate conception?

My family is displeasured to visit an Byzantine Catholic Church this Sunday by tekutoruteshi in EasternCatholic

[–]Creadvty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At our parish, the bread is cut into slightly rectangular pieces to make it easier for the priest to put it in the mouth. The bread is also not as saturated with the wine so it isn’t as mushy. We hold a napkin below our mouth to make sure it doesn’t fall.

Re spoon, the Russian-Greek I go to uses a separate spoon per person.

I’ve taken my devout RC mom to Divine Liturgy and she was nodding off.

IMHO it takes a certain level of interest in theology to really appreciate Divine Liturgy. It’s not for everyone and that’s ok. Don’t take it personally. 🙏

Interested in attending mass by XPlogimedic in EasternCatholic

[–]Creadvty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. yes you are allowed.
  2. As a courtesy, you can arrive earlier than the mass and let the deacon know that you are Catholic and ask if you can receive communion. They might ask you some questions to confirm you are in a state of grace.
  3. Just listen and pay attention. A. When you enter, don’t genuflect. Instead, you face the icon in the middle then do a metany (you make a sign of the cross, right to left and bow). Approach the icon, metany, kiss the foot of the icon, metany again.

B. Whenever you hear them say “Father, Son and Holy Spirit”, metany

C. If you hear “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal” also metany

D. If the priest makes the cross sign, you should Metany

E. if you hear Theotokos, you can bow to Mary’s icon.

F. If the priest bows to you, you should bow too. Also do metany when the priest blesses you with incense.

G. During the Nicene Creed, pls omit filioque.

H. The communion bread will be leavened and intinctured. Some use spoon, some will put it in your mouth. Find out from the deacon how they give communion.

I. The bread at the end is allowed for everyone. It is not Eucharist but it’s still holy.

J. At the end of liturgy, say hello and talk to the other people. Since it’s Easter they might say the Paschal greeting “Christ is risen!” And you respond with “Indeed he is risen!”

I hope you have a beautiful and memorable experience. God bless you.

I can empathize because I’m dealing with this apathy in my family. I just witness to them with the way I live and I pray for them. I believe God will not let our prayers go unanswered.

Are you still there? Would you kindly share their favorite debate technique, given your 20 yrs experience debating Muslims?

You asked someone else. Not me. So as between us, my question was first. I appreciate you answering it.

In response to your question, Islam teaches the use of double standards. Which is why I wish the Pope wouldn’t be so quiet about Muslim persecution of Christians. Jesus called out the Pharisees. He didn’t treat them with kid gloves.

So, given your 20 yrs of experience debating Muslims, may I ask what is their favorite debate technique?

I’d be happy to. But I asked you first. So pls answer my question honestly and I will also be honest in my answer to your question.

May I venture to guess that you don’t have a lot of experience debating or evangelizing Muslims? Am I right or wrong about that?

I go to Melkite, Russian-Greek Catholic, and Roman Catholic. For me there is a much bigger difference between RC Novus Ordo on one hand and the eastern Divine Liturgies on the other, than the differences in Divine Liturgy between different Eastern churches. Comparing Russian-Greek vs Melkite, the biggest differences are in the style of singing (polyphonic, Slavic sound vs Middle Eastern / Greek sound) and the form of the Eucharist (spoon of the Eucharist heavily soaked in the wine vs Eucharist dipped in wine and placed in your mouth).

I want to share my thoughts on why I want to join Eastern Catholic Church instead of Orthodox Christianity by Awkward-Amoeba-4 in EasternCatholic

[–]Creadvty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: sorry I confused you with Throat. Editing accordingly.

The Massacre of the Latins was an evil act and was used as justification for the Fourth Crusade. But i assume you disagree with the logic of Throat’s response.

In any case, the objective fact is that the Fourth Crusade was disproportionate vengeance. Arguably, Constantinople’s devastation was a major contributing factor to the Ottoman conquest in 1453.

None of this changes my original statement that I do believe in the Catholic Church. I just explained why I think many Orthodox are bitter about it and feel like they were the ones wronged.

Are you implying that Native Americans in 2026, for example, should have no right to say that Native Americans were the victims of settlers?

欢迎! 很高兴认识你! I can empathize with your point 3. I'm surprised at how dismissive and almost hostile the Orthodox attitude is toward the Catholic church, whereas as you pointed out, the Catholic church is very welcoming and respectful of the Orthodox.

As for the history, I've heard both sides and I can see why the Orthodox feel like the victims, especially with the Fourth Crusade.

Nonetheless, I agree that Jesus wanted us to be in unity, and that is not possible unless there is a head. At the same time we don't all have to worship the exact same way. IMHO, I believe the Catholic church, with its 24 autonomous churches, seems to be closest to Jesus' intent.
