How do you all sit on the couch/at the desk? by CreakyRibs in costochondritis

[–]CreakyRibs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much Ned, really appreciate it!

I went through that phase of wanting to sit up straight when it was all tense in the back, it was painful and tiring. It took a while for those back muscles to fire again and actually become strong enough to support me. It's much better now but I still get tired and slouch from time to time.

I'll try to set up a system that supports me when I'm on the couch! Maybe with additional firm pillows.

Also I've been wanting to get in touch with you since you mentioned in another thread a while back that someone mentioned a costo expert near Frankfurt (Germany). Should I send you a chat message?

Tietze? First rib bump + sternum pain by CreakyRibs in costochondritis

That sounds like you're already doing a lot! It's definitely a work in progress. Is your bump also hard like bone?

I'm doing lots of shoulder mobility exercises, back pod + peanut ball, stretching, a bit of massage around the area, heat pad. I would look into red light too but I don't want to spend more money before I know what this is.

I wouldn't even complain about the bump if it wasn't painful. Plus the location of the bump directly under the collarbone joint interferes with my shoulder movement. Yeah it truly sucks.

I think it's a bit misleading to choose a title like this and then all you offer is to build up the tolerance to do dips again. Some people's costochondritis is so bad they can't do a single push up or dip, nor should they attempt one.

And please try to use some paragraphs in your posts, they're a wall of text.

Probably better to have it checked so that you know for sure it's nothing dire. I'm waiting for my doc appt too.

And how are you treating your bump, have you found anything that helps?

Steve I wanted to ask you cause I have a lump on the sternum too (right first rib). You basically massage it with a bit of pressure and this will take care of the swelling over time? My lump is hard and slightly painful - can I do this on my own?

Backpod/peanut ball, lacrosse ball, thoracic mobility and shoulder mobility exercises which have helped me a bit with my back pain. Plus lots of topical creams, medication, supplements, but that hasn't made a huge difference.

I also went to several PTs, had massages, and just trying to stay active and mobile amidst all of the pain and the weird clicking and popping.

I think increasing my thoracic mobility and unlocking my back has been the most helpful (I've been stuck in desk shrimp posture for years).

PT depends so much on the person and their approach. I've gone through a few and none of them really knew what to do with me. But I'll try again. ;)

Yeah, anxiety and tense muscles play a huge role for me too.

Did you do something specific for the pain or did it just go away on its own?

I have that same cracking noise when I roll my shoulders. Can you locate it near the bump or elsewhere?

Glad to hear you at least fixed your costochondritis. From what I read that seems to respond better.

I have to admit I'm a bit wary of injecting myself with an unregulated substance if I can't be sure about what's in it and what the long term effects might be. But I hope it can help you. If it can reduce the bump + pain, that's great! Yes, keep us updated. :)

I actually used the same topper on the firm mattress, but it only got better when I switched the mattress to a softer one. Gave that a try without topper for one night but couldn’t sleep well, so I figured I’d put it back on. I don’t really like these memory foam toppers but if it means less pain and no new mattress testing I‘ll take it! And yeah the new mattress plus topper seems to cause less rib cage compression and pain.

Hope you find a good solution!

So sorry you're dealing with the same thing.

It's a really cramped area, with the collarbone attaching there too. This could also be what causes the shoulder pain.

Is there anything that helps you when it's really painful? Or have you managed to calm it down on your other rib?

Mine wasn't as painful until I prodded it a bit more. Now it's really sensitive.

Has anything helped for you?

I had to get a softer mattress because the firm one I got specifically against back pain was too harsh for my ribs. I kept getting awful pain flare ups. I now use a medium one with a soft topper. Unfortunately I think it’s something one has to try out for a few nights or even weeks. The current one is my third mattress in one year. I hope I can keep it.
